Has anyone pointed this article out?

Rick McCallum says the rest are a no-go if the theatrical TPM re-issuing isn't a success. WHAT? I mean you have to think; they're relying on the most critically panned of the Star Wars franchise to bring in audiences... It shouldn't be a surprise if people don't want to see that one again.

On a side note, the article mentions that Cameron is converting Titanic to 3D.

What Lucas is a billionaire who had so much money he gave away half his fortune to charity, but he cannot afford the restoration of the oot, cannot afford the live action series, and now he cannot afford the 3-D convert even with the blu ray sales, wow something tells me greed is the reason.

I also heard New Line plans to convert Lord of the Rings into 3-D not so sure if that will happen though, would sort of make sense seeing as how the 2 hobbit films are being shot in 3-D.

Since that has CGI backgrounds and with Peter Jackson's supervision, a 3D Lord of the Rings may look quite nice.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if ILM saved the final digital files for the 1997 cg special edition shots???

My guess would be "no," since the 2004 dvd revealed noticeable gate weave and other filmic anomalies. I'm guessing they just filmed them out in '97 and didn't bother to save the files.

The reason I ask is this:

When they eventually get around to the 3D conversion, even if they do a new scan they'll be working from filmouts for those '97 cg shots. I'd imagine it would look better if they had those original 2K files to work with for those shots.

Also, while I'm on the subject of a new scan, I should point out that a decent 4K scan would kill several birds with one stone. Right off the bat you would have, right there, a scan of the '97 version (you would have to color correct it of course, but it's the '97 edit). You would need to redo the 2004/2011 changes, but c'mon, that's doable. Last but not least, you would have, what, 80-90% of the OOT? Just scan in the missing pieces and voila, that's everything.

Yeah, I know, I should keep dreaming.

Second, I think Hollywood has entered an irreversible decline and American cinema is dead. It's like all the good movies ended with the 20th century and they studio heads focused on making shlock.

gonna get yelled at for going off topic but had to comment on this:

I don't know how much US films have declined.  The quality of the 1970s was pretty unique and may not happen again.  But I still think things are much better than the 80s (im sure we've all heard of the 'miramaxing' of hollywood that happened in early 90s).  However, one thing i've noticed for sure is that it seems foreign films are rapidly catching up with american films - at least those that are made by the big Studios.

I've always been kinda curious about foreign movies cuz I like anime and james bond movies.  but starting with crouching tiger, hidden dragon in 2000- im seeing more quality foreign movies.

I thought pan's labryinth was the best film released that year.  Amelie was better than a lot of movies.  Last year I saw a movie 'Black Book'  - and it was one of the best movies ive seen in a while (and not just because carice van houten is a babe).

a lot of recent horror fims are remakes of superior japanese horror movies.  My sister says the spanish version of vanilla sky is better than the tom cruise movie.  and some of my friends are telling me the chinese version of Departed is better than scorsese's movie :(

what if foreign movies end up becoming better than US the way people look at domestic/imports for beer/wine/cars/clothes ?

When the academy expanded the best picture field from 5 to 10, my sister said they should do away with the best foreign film category and just open the Best Picture to any movie regardless of nation.

had to remind her that Life is beautiful was nominated for best picture and still lost ;p  which still pisses her off the same way i get mad Star Wars lost to Annie Hall :D

Anyway, to get back on topic. i mentioned this on the other thread, but my guess is that TPM could = same gross as that clone wars movie that came out a couple years ago, which is a lot less than Lion King.

So has anyone gone out to see the Three Musketeers for the Phantom Menace trailer? I think I might go see it tomorrow.

My friend saw the trailer, which was a surprise to her. Her parents, who aren't huge Star Wars buffs said "Is that the only thing he does, mess with and then re-promote this series?"

I told her that we're going to watch The Ridiculous Menace instead of seeing that crap.

LOL. There are people who are starting to get it.

This is what happens when you start promoting a 3D theatrical re-release mere WEEKS after releasing the films on Blu-ray...

Actually, The Lion King did the very same thing (except in reverse).  Rather, this is what happens when you keep making changes.

So the masses don't have much longer to wait now, it seems...

Since my initial post here about this way back in 2009, certain 3D movies have gone on to give me and mine a great time at the movies, albeit a pricey one at times!  If only the 'powers-that-be' hadn't ended up charging an extra 'premium' for this latest 3D revival in the first place...  However, I'm fully aware that there's plenty out there that *still* wouldn't like the effect even if they'd been been charged the same rate as seeing a 2D movie.

Anyway, the idea of being able to see a 3D version of the 'Original Trilogy' on the big screen one day, was something that would have amazed me when I was younger, and although the attraction has waned since then due to too many alterations for the worse...and a general debasement of the franchise with disappointing follow-ups overall...the notion of seeing some of my favourite (as-yet-unspoiled, apart from the colour) movie scenes in this format, remains strong...

...so much so, that I'll be braving the more dire moments of the 'official' version of 'The Phantom Menace' once again, come February next year...just to satisfy my curiosity of how well the 'conversions' of the overall 'saga' are going to look when 'dimensionalized'...

Personally, I haven't yet decided if it was hilarious or just sadly typical that the recent trailer to hit the net happened to be so strangely-coloured...and happened to end with a nerve-grinding 'NOOOOOOOOOOOO!'...  But even George himself might balk at putting out *this* particular 'colour-grading' theatrically! ;)

Anyway, I'll be interested to hear if anyone actually sees this attached with anything onscreen at some point, to hear how it looked in actual 3D.  In the meantime until a better-coloured version appears, here's a working embed of the gloriously YELLOW trailer (hit the 'full screen' icon on the video for maximum impact) - http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=32319

lol, where's jar jar?

anyway, so this is being released in both 3d and 2d?

Lucas has a sycophantic fan-base but im not sure anyone would have an incentive to see this in 2d after releasing the blu-rays.  does fox have some sort of distribution clause that every 3d movie needs a 2d version?

I haven't paid much attention, but it appears to me that LFL hasn't really released much info on this or provided any behind the scenes sneek peaks.  During the 1997 SE, there was plenty of footage provided.  Even the IMAX release had an article detailing the setup work involved in making AOTC into an IMAX film.

That trailer is kinda hard to read - it starts off by strongly suggesting all 6 films will be released but then focuses solely on TPM and makes no reference as to when the other films will be released.  I was always dubious on the whole 'one film a year' thing.  Looks like they didnt want to risk oversaturation of all things Star Wars,  but 6 years is an eternity in technology time.

@doubleofive - great anecdote! yeah, it seems lucas' half-assed and laughably disingenious attempt to convince everyone that he's really an art-house/experimental/auteur cinema filmmaker hasn't worked out and people still see that he's in the franchise business.  always was, always will be.

It would actually be awesome if they released the movies in 2D as well. I don't care to see the prequels in 2D but the OT would be a treat - it's even possible, however unlikely, that they'll remaster OT for the 3D conversion.

Every major 3D release I've seen ads for mentioned a 2D version. Not every multiplex has 3D on every screen, and some patrons aren't going to see a 3D film for their own reasons.

The SE's were released in the space of a couple months back in 1997. A similar pattern ought to work here. They could at least get Jedi back out in theaters for the 30th anniversary.

This is going to do gangbusters at the box office and further bury the OOT.

The interesting thing to me is that the Lucas-produced Red Tails comes out a couple of weeks before TPM 3D. That's not to say these movies will be in competition in terms of their target audiences, but nevertheless Lucas will be in the news for a few weeks time.

Reminds me of summer 1986. Lucas had two productions out at the time. ;)

I'm not him, I've just finally woken up to reality. I'm no one's sock, thank you. I've just finally seen sufficient evidence that the battle is lost.

Wow the 2-D trailer for the 3-D version of menace is desaturated to all hell and has very bad dvnr like the blu ray.

If this is the final color grading its an absolute fail of epic proportions.

I really hope this crap was outsourced and not in house by ILM, because the quality is absolute shit.

The colours actually look as if they were optimized from anaglyph (red-cyan) 3D.

Not sure if you're referring to the recent YELLOW trailer upload or not, but here's another link that's now appeared since then.  Although it's in 'French', it seems to show the colouration that's more likely to be seen in cinemas eventually... ;)   (hit the 'full screen' icon on the video for maximum impact) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ansRdMzWFGY
