btw It's great that some countries/organisations (USA, Italy, BBC, NBC) seem to have deliberately sent openly Gay people to Sochi to represent them, just to piss Putin off.

Johnny Weir - best skating announcer ever.  And a great f.u. to Putin.  His announcing (shown only during the day) is so much better than Scott Hamilton's.

I am not so sure his is better than Scott Hamilton.  And the guy is a weirdo(not because he is gay but because of the way he dresses and the way he does his hair and his mannorisms).

That was my first impression too.  But after watching for a while I got past that and became very impressed with his quick wit and seemingly off-the-wall comments that invariably nailed his point home in an effective and entertaining manner.  They frequently make me laugh.  His outfits are coordinated with Tara Lipinski and manage to remain classy despite being untraditional... I think they make a fantastic team.  I mainly appreciate that what he says has content, whereas most of the time after Hamilton is done talking you just realized he has said basically nothing.

I love Winter Olympics mainly because of Ice Hockey tournament. It is my favourite sport. Especially loved these because our team was present and did amazingly well.

EDIT: Congrats to Canadian ladies for their gold medal btw.

Dear American Ladies Ice Hockey team:

You should be ashamed of yourselves.   You had a 2 goal lead with less than 4 minutes and couldn't hold it.   In those last fews minutes you played way too conservative.   You played not to lose instead of playing to win.  You made too little effort at trying to get the puck down to the other end of the ice.   After Canada pulled their goalie, the puck got sent down and almost went into Canada's goal.  Did you send anyone down to try to keep the puck on that side of the ice? Nope.  After that and in the seconds before the final goal in regulation of scored, did you make any attempt at sending to puck to the other side of the ice? nope.  Now lets discuss overtime.   You could have taken advantage of a penalty against Canada where you would have had and extra player on the ice for a couple of minutes and instead blow that by commiting a stupid penalty of your own.  Then you commit another penalty which gave Canada the one player advantage(and would have given them a two player advantage for 5 seconds) and Canada scored the winning goal.  This game was there for the taking and you blew it.  YOU BLEW IT!  I don't know who has authority to do it, but the coaches need to go.  Get rid of them and put together a better team for the next Olypics,  a team that won't blow such an opportunity to win to gold medal.  PLAY TO WIN INSTEAD OF PLAYING NOT TO LOSE!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

The Warbler

Dear, American Men's Ice Hockey team:

I guess it is easier for some to get past it than others.   I am surprised he hasn't recieved some criticism from the gay community for feeding into the stereotype that gay men are effeminate weirdos.

I was not saying that he was doing a bad job, its just hard for me to take him seriously.   But maybe he is doing a better job than I give him credit for.

^ There is no such stereotype, you've just imagined that one yourself.

There is however a stereotype that all "gay men are effeminate" and there is a seperate bigotted view point that gay men are "weirdos". The dictionary definition of 'stereotype' is "a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image". The former is just such an oversimplfication, the latter is just plain wrong.

Just because it's a stereotype, Ryan, doesn't mean everyone (or even the majority) has to hold it.

a stereotype could also be something the majority USED to hold.

Read the dictionary definition I provided again. Is it an "oversimplification" to label them "weirdos" or is it an opinion? If it is an "oversimplification" as you say, then please elaborate with the more complex version of your statement.

Again, read the dictionary definition I provided again. It says a stereotype is an "oversimplification"  that is "widely" held.

But this is getting way off topic when all somebody said was the nice positive thing that the dudes skating commentary was very informative. Shame that such a postive statement has to descend so quickly into negativity.

Peoples of the Earth please attend carefully, the message that follows is vital to the future of you all.

Let people be the way they are and not the way someone thinks they should be, should be the lesson Putin and others should take away from this.

It offends me that someone should be offended by so called effeminacy in anyone, male, female, gay, straight, auton, android or cyborg.

That is why I wear this outrageous outfit and shrink people to death with a black dildo.

If Puggo can give his opinion about Johnny Weir, I can give mine.

Here is Wikipedia's diffinition of steorotype:

A stereotype is a thought that may be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things.[1] These thoughts or beliefs may or may not accurately reflect reality

He has received a ton of criticism from the LGBT community - not for that, but for going to Russia at all and not being more outspokenly critical of Putin's policies.  He definitely marches to the beat of his own drum (plus, he has a Russian husband).  I don't think he's a weirdo at all.  He's just different.  The world would be a richer place if people allowed themselves (and others) more room to be themselves.  Oh - I also appreciate that he doesn't talk through the whole performance, but does most of the talking before and after.

I also like the guy doing the color commentary for bobsled.  He sounds like Hulk Hogan announcing a wrestling match!  But he knows his stuff and he knows a lot about the competitors.

I suppose everyone is entitled to their own diffinition of what is and is not weird.

perhaps, but I don't think that means we should deny that there is such a thing as being weird.   Or are you saying if I decided to wear a pillow case or a lamp shade as clothing, that wouldn't be regarded as weird.

well, there is something to be said for that.  Perhaps I need to get to know Weir's commenting style better.

I can't speak for anyone else...oh sorry...yes I can, but speaking personally. I call that being imaginative and creative. Brave, eccentric maybe but weird seems derogatory (like queer used to be until the queers appropriated it).

I think you should try walking around with a lampshade on your head just as a life experience, you could do it for charity and you might look great.

People should challenge their preconceptions once in a while.

I didn't wear jeans until I turned 30 (found out they are comfortable and great for gardening etc).

Whether or not it's weird, you'd have to admit that the world would be a richer place if you did :)

it was not mean as derogatory as that.   I am willing to bet there is behavior and mannor of dress that even you would find weird.

Yes you can and I never said you couldn't, I just pointed out that a personal opinion isn't a "Stereotype".

If Puggo had said "That really proves the sterotype that all gay people are good sports commentators" then I'd have pointed out that it wasn't ;-)

Warbler said: Here is Wikipedia's diffinition of steorotype:

Well then Wikipedia is wrong, as is its wont. The statement "may or may not accurately reflect reality" should be "does not accurately reflect reality", that is one of the things that defines a stereotype. It's a broad generalisation that distorts the truth and is therefore inherently false.

Let me give an example of a stereotype and since I'm from the UK... a stereotype would be that "British food is terrible". The food in tourist traps in London is awful which I'm sure is where that misconception arrises. Infact the UK has more Michelin restaurants than the US despite the US being a vastly more populous country. But your statement would have been akin to "British food is terrible because it comes from Mars". The former is a stereotype the later is just some crazy nonsense (That you are free to believe if you want to).
