2006 OT DVD: The Crawl on Star Wars

Anyone who has the disk…

What’s the story with the crawl? Is it THE original theatrical release? Not a photoshopped 1891 re-release?

I remember a thread around here a while back saying that it might be the Episode 4: A New Hope crawl except that it was photoshopped out. I don’t want that shit in the least…

Don't let Boris in here lol.

It has the original 77 starfield thats for one thing. But the question is and still remains, was it recreated and down graded in quality or was when they made the laserdisc master 13 years ago did they also do the original crawl. So I really can't answer your question but hoepfully someone can.

I think that the words are recreated though cuz the coloring is sorta off and it jsut doesn't look like the original.

Ya know, if they bothered to matte it onto the original star field, re-jigger the text to match the '77 formatting, and got rid of the stupid subtitle and episode number ... i will be a happy camper for all the attention to detail. From what I've seen of the text color on screen shots, it looks far more like the '77 hue than the later crawl (from what I remember of 30 years ago - gak!)

I hope the music matches the way I remember it, but that is also - like the color - going to be subject to memory only ... with nothing on any home video format to compare it with.

In other words, I don't mind a re-creation of the crawl if they do a good job of it. The remainder of the movie is NOT 1977 original*, so I don't demand absolute authenticity in the crawl.

(*That is to say, not the 70mm stereo audio mix from '77, and I daresay the blaster hits are still altered from the original release.)

Doesn't the EditDroid bootleg have the true original theatrical version?

Won't comparing that and the release tomorrow give a definitive answer?

It's the original crawl.

Okay....so if I buy this disk and then keep my boots that have the regular Episode 4 crawl, then I'll pretty much have both versions of Star Wars, right?

I want to have the original theatrical version and the 1981 re-release, that's all.

Jesus Christ....make we make up our minds here!?!?!?

Seriously though...when someone picks it up tomorrow, can yous take a good look at that crawl and tell me if it's been fudged with....

I don't want something that's been screwed with. Whether or not I buy all three depends on this one thing.

Someone already came to the conclusion that it was recreated. I can't remember which thread, but they took a screencap of the new one from the promo trailer for the OUT release that was on StarWars.com and compared it to a cap of the original crawl from Empire of Dreams, and the Star Wars logo receeded at a different rate.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Not so. The only thing that thread proved was that the crawl shown in the trailer for the OUT release was recreated.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Fair enough. Is someone going to take a cap of the new DVD to verify its authenticity, then?

I was the one that started that crawl thread. Basically, if you compare the timing of the Star Wars logo recession on EOD to the OOT disk, they are different--the OOT disk still has the logo slightly visible when the text first rolls up, while in the actual real crawl on EOD the logo completely dissapears and then the text comes. Some speculated that it was a mock-up or edit done for the trailer but i am more pessimistic. Can anyone confirm if it is different? Boba Feta that cap doesn't tell us much i think.

Now...as you watch it, does everything seem sync-ed up? There isn't a delay after STAR WARS disappears and the crawl begins?

If they messed with it, is it apparent?

Just look at it and tell me if you see anything out of the ordinary.

You won't be able to tell from stills, you have to actually watch it.

How's this?

The music cues seem fine to me, but I must admit, the only time I've seen the original crawl was in 1977.

Thats exactly what I am looking for! Surprise surprise--identical to the trailer, is it not? Looks like this is a re-created one. This could arguably come down to less-than-optimal exposure on the EOD footage trailer but if i remember correctly you could clearly see it fade out and then a fraction of a pause and then the text came. This has the logo still shimmering even as the second line of text is about to come up. So we can say at least that this is not the same as the EOD crawl, which then is natural to conclude that this is not the original crawl but a re-created one. I don't really think it matters either way at this point since the crawl is a bonus anyway and this is obviously a bunk release so i don't think anyone would care if its re-created at this point.

So Lucas recreated the crawl and tried to pass it off as the original? Gee, I'm shocked *yawn* One thing that led me to believe this was the original crawl, though, was the color of the text...very yellow-ish compared to the darker orange-ish color found on newer releases.

Well anyway, if it appears as if EOD has the TRUE original crawl, the shots used in EOD from the films are anamorphic, etc., then something else is in the works and the DVDs out today is simply a "warm up" release IMO.

Even better. Here is a scan of an original 77 print (let's just say this is from the "X0 Project archives"):

This would pretty much prove that not only does the OUT release look to have the original starfield, but so does Empire of Dreams and the 2004 DVD. Which begs the question, why did the other releases not have this starfield? I wonder if the "A New Hope" theatrical version had this "new" starfield as well.

And here is another scan. This one shows one of the last frames the Star Wars logo is visible:

This would confirm that the OUT trailer crawl is somehow doctored, seeing that the logo is nowhere near this faded away in the clip and the crawl is farther along.
2. Here are Zion's comparison-shots, but with an OUT-DVD screenshot (by me) included:

Credits go to Zion for supplying most of these screen-shots:

No, actually, it's clearly identical to EOD. this just proves that what you "were looking for" you would see no matter what was posted.

The indefinite article of course indicating openness to the possibility of being wrong (i am just going from memory), as well as my proposal that it may be due to less-than-optimal exposure on the EOD telecine.

This still doesn't answer the question though: why is it different than the EOD crawl? Clearly the EOD crawl is newly struck from a film source, however the OOT crawl is very different, in terms of image quality, image characteristics and colouring. Why was the EOD crawl not used, and does this indicate that the OOT crawl may indeed still be a re-created one, albeit a perfectly-re-created one?

Ya know, if someone can rip the crawl from the new DVDs, I can directly compare it to the EoD doc. I'd prefer to compare the actual movement of both crawls, rather than rely on a series of screencaps.

The EOD crawl was coloured to match the 2004-crawl colouring. The EOD suffers more compression then the OUT, and the EOD crawl seems to be cropped differently (however, this could be because it's the "whole frame", and the OUT disc is cropped to the anamorphic ratio).

Chill out Rev. Look, if it's this close, then I think it's has to be the real deal. If Lucas did a recreated crawl, we all know it would be a hack crappy inaccurate one. It would have required more work to fake it rather than dust off a print and we all know how he doesn't want to expend any effort on the original films.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77
