Starwars.com confirmed they used a black R2 for bluescreenshots. The mystery is solved!

I know why he was originally black, my question is why would they fix it in Jedi and Empire, but not fix it in ANH? I think it was an oversight. In fact even "Darth Editous" with his spectacular upgraded addition seems to have missed this. (That is not meant as a criticism), He caught many things the LF guys did not and some things I didn't even know about.

Although the black R2 was corrected in the '04 DVD version of Empire and Jedi, the result was very poor. R2 was WAY too blue, at least to my eyes.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Yeah, once I finally noticed, I too thought it looked a bit too blue.

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Okay guys, two days ago I showed that shot on Star Wars where R2D2 is black in space to a friend of mine, I paused it and asked if he noticed anything. He said no. I explained They used a black R2 for the blue-screen shot... then he agreed with me that it really doesn't look out of place since his panels are dark anyway.

I noticed R2D2's blackness fairly early on. Perhaps I'm more visually concerned than some people. I don't know. Either way, it never bothered me too much. It's just a movie. You can't expect everything from special effects. The scenes still worked in the emotional sense.
