Yikes!

Using <software> is neccesary to back up an encrypted retail DVD,
but <software> isn't needed (nor desirable IMHO) for duplicating a fan-made preservation project.

but "software" is required to extract the dvd content to the hard drive, whether it's encrypted or not. I used no decrpytion program when extracting these, as it obviously wasn't needed.

Too often using <software> results in a copy that's not a clone.

I'm not sure if you're just taking a jab at me because I didn't explicitly name the software that I used, but for the record it was dvd2one. I'm going to make an image with nero now and re-do all the torrents.

Perhaps it would be easier if I just set up an FTP site for this.

You're right. Software is required. That software is called an operating system.
I should have said you don't need any additional software, besides an OS, to copy unencrypted files from DVD to hard drive.

Of course you're free to use whatever additional software(s) you desire.
Some of them (apparently DVD2One) might change the files even though the files don't need to be changed (don't need to be decrypted, don't need to be shrunk).
Some (like Nero) might change the files without telling you and without touching the files' modification date/time.
(That was an older version of Nero I tried. Maybe they've fixed that bug by now.)
If cloning the original files isn't your goal, then feel free to ignore everything I write.

Don't let me ruffle your feathers. Although I'm not dowloading these, it's nice of you to offer them for those who want 'em.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

I really don't know one way or another, but I'm not sure I trust the 5-star very much to be authentic 5.1 mix. IIRC, these also came with a DTS track that was just a straight conversion from Dolby, and a poor one at that. But they could be the authentic 5.1 from the Laserdisc.

You're probably right. Getting a direct copy of the Dolby Digital 5.1 track off a laserdisc is not easy - you need specific hardware (a demodulator and a sound card that doesn't resample the SPDIF input). An Asian bootleg outfit is unlikely to go to these extents.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be uploaded, just that it shouldn't be assumed to be the authentic '97 audio. It probably won't sync with the GKar versions straight off the bat, either.

Wainsco, are you still going to torrent the g'kar set?

that's an awesome idea. i think that's what darth mallwalker had in mind when he offered the english crawls and subs. (and partly why i'm torrenting the G'kar version...dvb but no logos)

I don't know how to do anything like that, so maybe someone will pick up on it. would be cool, imo.

Did anyone ever end up trying to do this? I'd be so happy, as the '97 is what I grew up with.

I'd like this as well. Only because my bootleg 5 star set isn't that great.

I would love to see the digital TB and/or Gkar versions wind up on the spleen that is mine.

That super SE 1997 version is such a neat idea. I really wish that I could do it, just don't have the know-how yet. If someone was else was to do it, I'm sure that there would be decent interest in the project. I think it would be a valid preservation.

There's a '97 ANH @myspleen called "REIVAX"
Source................: Digital Beta Tape
IIRC its opening crawl, Greedo, and Jabba scenes all have hard French subs.
No seed ATM, but that could change....

Unfortunately, I don't think that there have been any seeders to that torrent in quite a while. Also, no ESB or ROTJ.
But I too wish that someone would post one something like Gkar or TB editions somewhere. Maybe someday....

gkar editions are pal and not nstc so are the TB ones i believe.

most people who have the TB have errors when they copy them.

the only person i know of who supposedly has unaffected copies is selling them, quite illegal and against these forums rules so i will not mention his name.

if only who created the TB set could be found, possibly they have the raws or the unaffected copies.

the only other options are the bad quality asian bootlegs which are no longer available for the 1997 versions or dark jedi and boba fetas set sourced from the laserdiscs.

dj also did pan and scan versions from the vhs tapes.

does lucas have hidef copies of the 1997 special edition probably, will he ever release them. not a chance!

who cares anyway these are the hated special editions anyway and not the oot.

97 SE isn't nearly as hated as 04 SE

See, I keep hoping that someone would do an NTSC conversion of the GKAR German anamorphic 1997 SE, which is supposed to be the best transfer ever of the 97 SE. Just splice in the English crawl and the English Greedo/Jabba scenes and you have a really great preservation. Seems like every time this is brought up, nobody cares because they're the "hated Special Editions". The thing is though, these actually received a theatrical release, and in my opinion they're much closer to the OOT than the 2004. Not to mention the colors are perfect on 97 SE.

The OOT and the 2004 SE are both available legitimately on DVD, but the 97 SE will probably NEVER see the light of day again. I just think it'd be great to have a high quality copy of the 97 trilogy, complete with the authentic 5.1 mix.

Just my two cents

This preservation really should be done and made available for distribution via the regular channels. If a person chooses not to like the SE's or the prequels, that's up to them. There will always be those that want to see what is being locked in the vault. Theatrical versions need to be preserved. If not just for the sake of history. Items like the '97 SE or the IMAX version of AOTC really should be available but have unfortunately slipped through the cracks.

I'm glad some people agree with me.

Sluggo is right. Bad or not, the '97 SE will never again see the light of day, so it does deserve a decent preservation, with DD 5.1, even if it is just to complete the set.

the laserdisc release in the usa and japan was a 5.1 mix you needed a rf out and the equipment to get it i think.

the uk obviously never got anything beyond stereo releases as far as i remember 2.0 dolby.

you'd have to ask moth3r he is the uk laserdisc go to guy for star wars.

as much as i disparage the 1997 and the 2004 i own them and the 2006 gout, so i'm guilty as charged. lol.

i got my gkar set through a trade with rikter. not sure if he still has them on his hard disc or can copy them for people who ask nicely. and postage and shipping or whatnot, as the rules of the site apply.

the best ntsc release was the 2000 japan boxset with the behind the scenes of episode II clip. too bad they have hard subs. i only own the us release, i do have a pretty incomplete star wars laserdisc collection.

the 1997 vhs tapes and laserdiscs came from a digital source which was obviously transfered to analogue. tape or laserdisc with digital sound. the digital video broadcasts were carried on both analogue and digital stations in europe and the netherlands . the digital one is what people obviously want. supposedly canal plus did a broadcast in france that was all in english included the titles and subs this is the TB release. the german broadcast was in german subs and in english. which is weird since each country got their own repective dub for the special editions as well as the originals.

now we get to the other subject aspect ratio the laserdiscs and widescreen vhs are letterbox. not sure if the dvb broadcasts were 2:35:1 anamorhpic or 4:3 letterbox . the set i have of gkar is anamorphic i think but i might have been stretched to anamorphic by the dvd creator, unless the person could be contacted to see whether or not it was oar. oh shit i just remembered that the gkar is slighly cropped might be 1:78:1 or some shit.

the gkar has a sharper picture than any laserdisc sourced dvd being pal and not ntsc but it plays back at pal speed so unless you enjoy pal speedup it is crap. plus their is some blockiness in the image in some areas from compression, maybe. i obviously cannot say whether it is in the raw capped broadcast or not.

In frame or out of frame hardsubs?

If they're out of frame (as I think the 1987 box subs are), they can be cut off without damaging the video.
