??????????

I think I'd be mighty pleased (if it was the OT).

What I meant was, I wouldn't want to see the OT be cheap-ass made-in-China crap like most of the other stuff at Wal*Mart. It's bad enough that yet another DVD box set comes out on Tuesday -- it's the same as the one you all (don't) have, just without the extras disc -- and that it seems about 50% of consumers in the US still want something that "fills up their screens".

Sigh.

If obtaining good prints is a money issue, then we could start a web site for raising the necessary funds. I think everyone here would be willing to give at least $50 for a really good set of the Original-original trilogy.

If no company could be found that would be willing to digitize the film for the fan community, I believe a good digitizing rig could be built from an old projector and a digital camera with some special-purpose optics, hardware and software to step frame by frame.
I would not be surprised if the expertise to build it could be found on this board. We are not all high-school kids. I, myself am a software programmer who build replicas of Star Wars movie props in my spare time. I am sure there are engineers here that know optics, mechanics or electronics.

16mm telecines aren't cheap, but they can be bought by mere mortals.

Far out! That Sniper is the thing you need. Any volunteers?

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

The "Sniper" camera seems to be a regular analog video camera with NTSC resolution!
Read the "How the damned thing works.". (actual title of the page)

What we would want is a digital camera with high definition that can be run in a kind of "slave mode" where exposure is controlled by our custom software. Ideal would be a 4 megapixel web camera that can save uncompressed pictures. We want 1080p video, don't we.
I believe there exist ordinary digital cameras that can be put in a "webcam" mode.. but I have not found any info on them yet.

I feel quite the opposite. I'm excited because it makes me believe that the original trilogy in better-than-LD quality is possible.

I'm with the earless one on this I'm afraid. It's all well and good to dream of spending around 10 grand for what may possibly, eventually be a better quality transfer, but realistically the XO project is our best hope.

The winning bidder on the Nov. 14 auction for the 16mm print of Return of the Jedi was not a registered user but spent over $2,000 on that thing. I hope to God that Lucas isn't an eBay troll and snatching up our little rays of hope, because Lord knows he's got the money to do it. And I don't think he want to be a registered user.

Ha, that guy selling the ANH 16mm doesn't even have any pictures. Not even of the reels themselves. I like to see what I'm buying.

I agree. I'm just giving out info when I see it.
