Before people get too much more excited about the idea of disseminating the X0 capture, I think it would be worth considering just what an enormous amount of data we're talking about here. Even a dual-layer DVD wouldn't be capable of containing two hours of *uncompressed* video. You guys want to mail each other DV cassettes, fine, but expecting an online upload is pretty unrealistic.

The timecoded version was a crappy low bitrate avi if Iremember correctly, nothing exciting. But it looked good :-)

So I can't remember now--were the two Black Magic'd shots ever uploaded anywhere?  If so, I'd really like to have them both.

If anyone but me is interested, Darth Mallwalker pointed out to me that there are some screen shots of the timecoded version on this thread.

It was a timecoded copy, simply meant so all the members could tell each other exactly what they were working on down to each frame.  It was just a reference, it wasn't the actual video they were working with.  I believe it was made from the video they were working with, but it was much lower quality since it was just meant to be a timecode copy.

Ahh... gotcha. How much lower is it? Despite its lower quality, would it still have been better than most laserdisc preservations or the GOUT?

Probably not.  Besides, every frame has timecode burned into it, so unless you like watching digital workprint, I don't see how the timecode copy is useful in any way.

Big upload? Sure. Why unrealistic?
Sometimes I find myself Dreaming of being the guy to try it.
Wow what a thrill, not to mention what an honor that would be...

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

It certainly sounds unrealistic at first, but if the capture is converted to lagarith instead of uncompressed, it would probably be about the size of a BD-50 and people upload those to newsgroups all the time.  (Just a thought!)

That sounds like the most practical idea Chewtobacca; though I would push the compression to about the size of a BD 25 (smaller yet pretty good quality). If needed, perhaps a quick and dirty (no menus or frills) dual-layer DVD can be completed for the raw capture. With those two sources, people should be able to do whatever they want with them.

It's not really a matter of pushing the compression.  If you use lagarith, you get what you get.  I said that the file would probably be about the size of a BD-50 because people do upload things that size: I didn't meant that one should be authored.  It sounds like your talking about encoding to a lossy (delivery) format, which is a different situation entirely.

Sorry I misread your post. I thought you were planning to shrink it to the exact size of a BD-50 to spread it around... I actually think a lossless format would be nice; although, for people with less hard drive space (me NOT included), it may be considered to release a lossy version (perhaps 9GB or 25GB).

I'm not really a torrent guy, but anyone is welcome to do that once it's uploaded to usenet. (January 19, 2011)

Great news, Zion! Thanks for "displaying" step one of The XØ Project for all us SW laserdisc owners. (I'm glad I check back here yearly.) :)

Has anyone *noticed* these backups on some rapidly-sharing site (it's all that works for me)?

Not sure why you'd think that? Because it hasn't happened yet?
If he said on Jan 19 he'd do it, doesn't mean he'd do it on Jan 19. Know what I mean?

There might be other reasons. I don't pretend to know what's going on with Zion or other team members.
I just hope lack of time or lack of bandwidth aren't the only reasons, as I was quite serious to help in Post 2282. But there's nothing special about me in that regard. Expect others would too

Is there a backup of the X0 Project website somewhere? Or at least the screen caps?

Try Wayback machine, it doesn't have pics though.

Yeah, that's why I was asking about the screen caps. It does have two or three of them.

Zion, hope you can get to the "display" these LD backups at your very earliest convenience (it's "pins & needles" for all us). ;)

BTW, exactly what caps have-you/will-you put up? All the caps referred to in your quote above? Hopefully individually? Including work done by you and/or colleagues (text notes, data files, etc.)? Any additional info is appreciated.

Can't someone just take what's existing now and burn it to BD's? I'd pay 15 bucks for a BD copy even if all the fine touches weren't all done, 15 for each one.

I couldn't agree more, that would be kick ass. Given that all we have to watch now is the shitty letterboxed bonus dvd discs, any improvement would be awesome. I would kill for a widescreen BD copy of these transfers, they would destroy those bonus discs. Those bonus discs are so gay.

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a kind of Star Wars curse going around, infecting all the really good projects?

Or maybe LucasFilm is just sending everyone letters telling them to vanish without a trace...or else.
