First and foremost is to get a clean 4X3 transfer out. Not much has been decided beyond that.

Sorry I should have been more specific- I meant letterboxed like the LD source is (4:3).

I'm sure someone, if not the X0 team, will take the video and make an anamorphic version.

But I have a quick question: with all the microscopic restoration work done on ANH, how much work will need to be done to clean up ESB and ROTJ? You mentioned that they're not as bad, obviously, but will it need the same kind of detail work that the current project is taking? Just how clean are those later films?

It's a pretty significant difference from what I've seen. But MeBe would know for sure.

As far as an anamorphic release goes, there's no way I'm watching a 4:3 letterboxed version on my HDTV, so what do you think? For as much as we've dogged the GOUT for it's non-anamorphic presentation and how many times we've discussed the anamorphic vs. letterbox issue, it's would almost be hypocritical to only do a 4:3 letterbox release.

Another question: I've read the whole thread, but it's pretty long, but are you erasing the dirt and scratches potentially caused by the optical printer?

Well, sometimes it's hard to tell what was caused by what, but I've removed much of the yellowed splice tape between scenes (at least every two to three scenes, but usually on the bottom.) Most are easy cut&paste, but there are some occasionally toughies that have to be replaced bit by bit - usually due to rapid movement. There are also occasional lines of pixelation, which I assume were caused at some point during the transfer to LD. Some are sporadic, while at other times it can be rolling through many frames. The scene where Artoo is in the canyon prior to being captured was probably one of the worst.

With the anamorphic talk going on it got me thinking.

I know that combining different LD sources you are recovering detail 'lost' between the scan lines.
It SOUNDS like you all need more than 360 lines of resolution to hold this video information.

Are you guys doing your clean up and restoration at 480p or are you planning to upscale when you are finished?

To me, I think Empire looks worse in some ways than Star Wars. The bright snow scenes are very noisy. Star Wars faded a lot but I think the THX process was better able to compensate for that than the flaws in Empire. The smearing is definitely worse on Empire, they definitely overdid it. I have a pre THX '92 vhs tape and some of the scenes which had bad smearing didn't look like they needed that much DVNR at all.
By the way, what does Digitally Mastered really mean? I hope that's not too off topic but I always thought it was a big deal and indicated a good tape transfer without much generation loss. I didn't realize that the telecine was much more important. I knew the THX versions were digitally mastered. The transfer from the master to the GOUT dvd is actually pretty good but the master's quality is very dated. However, my '92 vhs also says Digitally Mastered and some of the older Star Wars from earlier releases have it too. It seems like saying something is digitally mastered today is like boasting a new dvd player has stereo sound capability.

It means "we used a computer to create the master." In the DVD age it goes without saying. (And yet, I still put it in the ADM logo.)

Hey, you've probably already answered this but I can't search the thread, so I'll just ask - as well as cleaning up the video, will there be a 5.1 audio or DTS mix? These seem to be lacking on any of the original trilogy sources.

Thanks

EDIT: OH, there we go... I see the search function. lol, I don't come here often.. please disregard this question if you've already answered it.

To my knowledge, this is about preserving first and foremost the laserdiscs in the highest quality possible. To that end, no, there would not be, as none of the laserdiscs had more than a stereo track.

The project's second goal is to preserve the theatrical experience as much as possible from the highest-quality laserdisc sources available. On this side, unless someone were to have access to the six-track 70mm mix (which would end up being 4.1, not 5.1), the best you'll get is the theatrical stereo mix and the theatrical mono mix.

Now I'm sure someone will take this source material and combine it with a surround mix a la MeBeJedi's experiment with it a while back. So it'll probably happen, you just might have to wait a while. Of course, I'm not a member of the X0 team, so I could be wrong about all this, but this is my understanding of the project.

Digitally Mastered. Really. That's cool, I guess it means that if I transfer a 3rd generation fuzzy vhs tape to dvd, as long as I edit it on vegas and make a master avi file, I can truthfully say "Digitally Mastered."
Wow, that is pretty useless to mention these days. Like boasting about how my videos recorded on my Hi8 camcorder are "presented in Academy screen format."

I was just wondering how long has it been since anybody heard from Laserman?
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

There are some threads I haven't been looking in very much despite me knowing about the project, and this is one of them. (I have, however, checked out the X0 website many times) I'm currently reading through the Star Wars Revisited thread; on page 24 of 202...oy!

Anyway, I plan to read through this and maybe the last one as well, but for now, I was just wondering what the official status of this project is as far as others seeing it. I had always heard that no one besides the editors would ever see it, but now that doesn't seem to be the case.

Hi,
Newbie here. I won't bother asking the usual newbie questions, coz I can read.

When I first stumbled across this project a few weeks ago, my initial thought was 'wow, that's impressive!'. Having read the threads, my impressions have changed to 'F##K that's awesome!'.

I was hoping to make a donation on your website and possibly buy a t-shirt. I've sent an E to the XO email addy, but have had no reply. Are you guys still accepting donations or selling t-shirts?

To all the guys working on this project: awesome work dudes. I am seriously impressed and hope you continue.

To Laserman: I hope you are feeling better soon. Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy, Oi, Oi, Oi!

If television is chewing gum for the mind, then the prequels are the worlds first visual laxative.
