I don't think the X0 people need your voice for funds, if they needed it they would ask themselves. Give up the good samaritan bit will you?

I don't think I need YOUR permission to offer up the idea on this thread....give up the moderator-wanna-be bit, won't you?

Nothin' like a little drama to keep a thread alive...

However, I too am curious to know how the X0 team is doing. An update, even a brief one, would be welcome. I have to admit I'm almost ready to stop visiting the X0 web site daily.

For example, in the image with the Stormtroopers, the brightness of the sky and sand in the middle of the frame is overblown, and yet the leather pouches on the trooper's shoulder are completely dark. Does that mean the image of the canyon is darker than what was actually seen the the theater that day? Maybe, maybe not.

No, it's due to the fact that these pictures were taken off of a projection of the film. Anyone whose shot a film with a video camera (I've done a couple of personal 16mm transfers) will recognize this problem. It's just due to an imbalance of light from the projector bulb. The intensity of the light is hotter in the middle sections than around the edges. That's also not to mention the possibility of bad exposure and 30 year old color film.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I am very tempted to donate, and I love the website and the effort these guys are putting in.

I can even understand why they won't even guess at a release date, since so many things can get in the way... but have they even told us how much of the film has been completed?

If we knew it has taken them a year to do 15 minutes, at least we'd get SOME idea of the time involved.

Maybe the website can have a % counter that is updated to reflect how much of the film is completed. Is that too much to ask for?

That sounds like a neat idea.

Yeah, it actually does. I don't know if it's something those guys would consider doing, but it would certainly be a cool barometer on the project.

I think it would be really helpful to know what has been done and what is remaining. Otherwise, we will be "most displeased at the apparent lack of progress." It sounds like lot of preparation and mundane things went into setting up this effort, such as the timecoded print. Or maybe create a FAQ on the website that explains why this has been so time consuming. It seems to me that there's been plenty of work done that we don't know about.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't going to originally be a straight X0 transfer from the '93 set, meaning it would be about the same as the GOUT? When did you decide to color correct the film and then to use another source altogether (the Japanese special collection) to combine it into one?
About the missing frames, was the Japanese special collection telecine ever used for another release such as vhs? Because I was looking at the '92 pan & scan NTSC vhs which I believe was the last vhs release before the '95 faces set. There is definitely some missing frames and music after Yoda's "There is another." line on the Empire tape.

EDIT: One last question, are those screenshots of the missing frames from X0 captures?

IIRC, the Incredible Shrinking Aspect Ratio and fixed pre-DC widescreen versions use the same master as the SC.

This is taken from the first page of this thread....

So, What Are You Guys Doing?

First and foremost, the project aims to be an archive preservation of the Original Star Wars Trilogy laserdiscs in the best quality possible. We are culling video from a number of different sets. These include, but are not limited to, the US Definitive Collection set, the US "Faces" set, and their Japanese equivalents.

Every single frame will be looked at and corrected. Fixes will be limited to dirt and film damage removal, color correction, and stabilization. Wherever possible we will be using the actual celluloid film for reference.

Glitches including matte lines, saber colors, and frame jumps will not be fixed in the initial version. A possible second version could include fixes to matte lines and garbage mattes, but keep the rest of the "glitches" intact.

The finished archive will form a perfect base for any future restoration project or fan edit we might do afterward.

Zion,

I took a number of these “screenshots” during that period in different theaters. The camera always registered a hot spot from the projector’s light source in the center of the frame. Everything was shot with Kodacolor 400 print film (who knows how the color temp lined up).

Looking at the prints themselves, it’s apparent that some general brightness compensation was applied during processing. If you like, I could repost these without cropping the black masking at the edge of the movie screen. I think you would find that if I equalized the level of the masking to be the same for all, the two shots of Artoo in the canyon would appear even darker that what I posted originally.

What audio does X0 include? If it's done from the '86 LDs, it isn't the original audio, right? It would be cool, if there were many audiotracks to select.

Btw, I have the very first rental video of SW ('82?), and the canyon scenes are much lighter than in the later releases I have. I thought it was a bad copy, but I had two of them, and both were as light.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Regarding donating to the X0 project, I donated, but I don't really have any idea if they got my donation. A gentle suggestion to the X0 team might be to try to acknowledge when a donation is received - it could encourage more.

Did anyone from the X0 team ever reply to my post about letting us know what percentage of the movie is finished?

As I said a few weeks ago, I don't think anyone is expecting to hold them to a release date, but it would be nice to know how much final material they've managed to squeeze out of the last two years or so...

No offense, but the reason why nobody responded was because we don't like divulging how far along we are. If you've followed this thread, you'll notice that we've never divulged the status of our project. Why? Because when you're under a microscope and people demand progress and one of your partners has a serious illness and other members are experiencing troubles at certain points in time, progress doesn't happen. Coordinating work between 4 people who live in different countries takes a lot of time and money.

What if I told you we were 1% complete? What if I told you we finished last summer and we've been sitting on a preservational gold mine ever since? Would you feel any better knowing that we still haven't released it? I'll humor you for a second though.

Asking me to give you a rough percentage of how far along we are would be a little complicated. How much of the DC is cleaned up? Most of it. How much color correction is done? Most of it. How much of the SC is cleaned up? Some of it. How much has been put through the Black Magic process? Not sure.

So let's see. If you add all that up, adjust for inflation, multiply by pi, and divide by the gross national product, I think somebody owes me a grande mint cocoa from Starbuck's.

But really, don't ask that question. I have a month off from school and I'll be damned if you guys won't get an update or three over the next two weeks.

This was my motivation for donating and voicing my support for you guys.....It wasn't my intention to piss anybody off by taking about that evil word "money" or the word "donation"....

Thank you to the X0 team for all your hard work.

( An update on how Laserman is doing would be cool too...)

I doubt that there will ever be another fan-project as ambitious as this, I'm just happy that the team is taking their time!

Sorry if you took my "status" question the wrong way... it just seems to me that if you are asking for donations and selling merchandise to help fund the project, people have a right to know what is up with it. Simply asking how much is done seemed like a fair compromise.

How about releasing ONE finished scene so people can see what they'll be getting?

Honestly, if you really want donations, keeping folks in the loop and showing them bits of the finished product is a good way to entice them. I asked my question originally because I was tempted to donate and wanted to know more before I did. Several other posters also liked the idea of a progress report, maybe they were thinking of donating too.

Giving us a heavy, condescending attitude is probably not the best way to fish for cash.

I doubt you meant "fishing for cash" to sound the way it did, but you make it sound like they are a bunch of beggars. The X0 team is not fishing for cash. They are just offering us a chance to support the project in a monetary fashion. But no harm done, I just thought your phrasing could be misconstrued.

I'm going to come down on Mojo_LA's side.

You see I'm building a flying car. You can feel free to send me as much money as you want (since you'd all love a flying car, though your donations won't actually get you a flying car).
Also I won't tell you what's been done, how far along I am, whether I'm taking your money and flying to Tahiti, OR present you any proof beyond a few pictures.
So who's in?

The X0 teams is asking for a helluva leap of faith for no good reason that I can see.

I'm actually looking forward to the website update more than anything. It's been almost a year since any new content has been posted and what's there has been very educational (crossing fingers for color correction part 3). I'm weird in that I sometimes love reading about something even more than the thing itself.

Jesus, what did I do? I feel responsible for this crap now polluting this thread. I've read BOTH X0 threads and as far as I can see none of the X0 members EVER begged or "fished" for cash donations.

I WAS. It was ME that was excited that I finally had a few extra bucks to donate to the cause and thought I would come on this thread and suggest or encourage people to do the same. That's all. If I knew what this would blow up into I would of just kept my mouth shut. Lesson learned.

My apologies to the X0 team....

I guess I missed the part where we were going door to door begging for money.

There's a link for donations on the web site, yes. But the last time we actually posted here asking people for cash was more than a year ago when hard drives had died and funds became scarce.

All I'm saying is we're going to go about our project the way we see fit. I know what you're saying, you want to see what we have and you want it now or else your off the boat. I'm sorry to tell you that between myself and Laserman who is MIA at the moment, I can't give you everything you want. Please bear with us.
