In regards to correcting the first third of Anh, what part in the movie does that go up to? Does it correspond with a side flip? It won't take as long to correct with the new capture because you know exactly how to adjust it, right? Oh and how's the t-shirt design going?

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

I believe it went up to Luke and Obi-wan going into the cantina. I'll have to double-check that.

Unfortunately, correcting this version isn't that easy. My earlier work was on the Faces set. The Definitive Col, while showing the same kinds of errors and dropouts, has some in different places. Many of the fixes I'm making are at the pixel level as well, and it's mostly a question of checking each individual frame. There are some segments that have little or no errors, and some that are rife with errors (The jawas at the Lars farm comes to mind as one of the worst.)

I know you guys tell us not to bug you about when it will be finished, but I'm just curious. Is there a projected release date, or is it just a "it's finished when it's finished" type of thing?

Did you ever do a "toot" of 3 captures? Do you have multiple captures? Do you have captures of different DC LD sets?
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

As I understand it, the idea is to do the best possible transfer of the laserdisc set, rather than try and recreate the original '77 release, in which case I guess they will be leaving it in??

To begin with, yes. At this time, we'll have an excellent master to work with, and perhaps edit to resemble the original edit as closely as possible. I already have a recreation of the original crawl based on the one shone in the DVD documentary, and I believe we pretty much have all the original audio snippets like C3PO and so on.

Believe me, we've thrown around a lot of ideas about what can be done after the original transfer is made. We're just too focused on the current work to decide what will happen next, which makes sense, since this work has to be done first anyways.

[EDIT] Hell, maybe we'll make our own 3-D version!

Can you please keep the sound PCM and NOT converted to DD2.0 or 5.1? The PCM sound of laserdisc is infinitely superior in every way to a DD conversion.

I assume these DVD's will be Duel Layered? It is impossible to keep the quality high enough if you go single layer as too much compression and filtering would be applied. This is not even debateable.

My SUSPIRIA "Fixed Audio Edition" is Duel Layer with PCM and the 5.1 "remix" is included so you can switch back and forth and be astonished at how pathetic some DD5.1 remixes are compared to what was on the laserdiscs of the 80's and early 90's.

I won't argue about the call for DVD9's on this (only because I'm a fussbudget), but in all fairness, laserdiscs do not contain enough information to truly warrant it.

40 Gigabytes, BABEEEEE! And that's just the raw capture.

Does the raw capture support HD resolutions? Even if the source material isn't that good, I'm curious if it'll take advantage of Blu-Ray, given that we're looking at that kind of timeframe.

By "support", do you mean upconverting?

do you mean making 1080 resolution for the XO project

The problem is we'd be looking at a year or so before there's any real shake down of HD-DVD vs. BluRay, probably longer.
So they'd either have to make both or gamble on a possible obsolete upconversion.
Besides the cost of blanks and how few early adopters there's likely to be in the group, I think their time is better spent on the DVD version and maybe a Xvid HD like Citizen.

In my opinion (and this is a bit off-topic), HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are two technologies that should be avoided at all costs, by everybody. The DRM (digital rights management) is so unbelievably draconian that it's criminal and highly user-unfriendly. Both formats deserve to die a quick and horribly-expensive death. Teach those anti-consumer bastards at Sony, Microsoft, Toshiba et al a lesson.

Those of you who want HD resolutions should be looking at a nice open standard like Xvid. Well-known, widely available, no DRM (if you make it yourself, anyway), and playable on standalone players. Yes, even in HD.
