Questions like these can't be answered right now -- mostly because they aren't a concern of ours at the moment. I'd like to sit here and say that subs are pretty easy to do and should be included, and that PCM audio is a possibility, but the fact is we haven't discussed anything at all outside of the video transfer to this point.

NEWB QUESTION WARNING

I am only familiar with burning DVD R+ discs on my home PC. I hear a lot of talk on the boards about using single layer and dual layer DVD's to burn restorations. If I were to walk into a store and pick up DVD R+'s, how would I know if they are single or dual layer? I don't notice any indication on the labels. Also, do you need a special DVD R drive to burn onto dual layer discs? Can the standard DVD R drives that come with Dell, Gateway, etc. computers burn onto dual layer DVD Rs?

Thanks guys.

Dual layer discs DO indicate on labels what they are, this usually is a big DL, and as zion mentioned also feature the data capacity. Another easy indicator is that DL discs cost a lot more than single layer, often about six times the price. If you haven't seen any of the indications then it is quite possible your local media store simply doesn't stock DL discs as they aren't really that popular yet.

Again, as zion also said, only burners that specify the capability can burn DL media as it is fairly different to regular burning. Most burners produced in the last few months do, not many at all before that do.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Observer, I strongly recommend you spend some time at videohelp.com. You will learn more there than you will ever need about video capture, editing, conversion, burning, formats, etc.

I've seen so many transfers I really got confused about the colors. The star wars clips in the WOW! clip of the THX demo disc are rather red (but I think it looks pretty cool). Many people think the official 2004 dvds are rather blue. Can you give an indication of what color the X0 transfer will be like? Or does is differ very much for different scenes?
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

Thanks for the info. I know it was a little off topic, but since the most recent restorations (X0 and Citizen) have been talking about making theirs dual layer, I thought it might be appropriate to ask inside this thread instead of making a completely new one. Also, thanks for the link Doctor M.

Actually, I thought the 2004 DVDs had color problems all over the place. Check out the sand...rediculous.

The 2004 DVD's had excellent video, but the audio sucked.

Basically between color problems, audio problems and "creative" changes, the only thing the 2004 release had going for it was sharpness.

Hallo. I’m new here, but I’m really appreciating your hard efforts to do it. I have a copy of some LD-Trilogy transfer, but quality is pretty lame. But you really do a great, GREAT JOB trying to make DVD’s as high quality as possible. Thank you guys!

I don’t know was it discussed previously or not but I have one question. Do you have any plans to include an isolated score track? This is not too hard to create it and what a great opportunity to watch Star Wars with John Williams’ music only, like a silent movie as Lucas once said about his vision of Star Wars (English subtitles can be very helpful in this case).

I have made this isolated track to my lame copy of A New Hope just for fun and I’m very happy with it. I’m planning to make it for episodes 5 and 6 also.

What do you think about it? Is it needed to somebody else except me?

If you interested I’ll be glad to share my Wave files with you, which will be synchronized to the whole movie. I’m a musician and I’m working in film music area (pretty far from U.S. though) so the professional level will be ultimate in this case.

Benefactor78, while it is too early to know whether or not X0 Project-based releases will have Isolated Score tracks, you can already download a couple of good DVD sets with one already. These are the ISOMIX and EditDroid sets, both featuring their own isolated tracks for all of the trilogy. If you only wish to download one set then I recommend the EditDroid Set, it has some other unique features and the video quality is generally rated better.

I agree wholeheartedly with that. The level of detail is amazing. Everything else was disappointing.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Oh that's interesting. I didn't know about it. Thanks for info, but I'm not sure where I can download those sets?

It scares me to think what you do with your DVD of the Holiday Special, then! Or if you don't have one out of disgust or fear, it scares me what you would do with it!

You'll find several LD transfers there and lots of other SW related goodies.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

Hi guys,

been away for a couple of months and so to catch up I just re-read this entire thread. Phew! I have a couple of questions for Laserman/Zion/MeBeJedi (if and when they have time) which I couldn't find answers to in the preceding 36 pages:

1) You earlier said that you were working from Definitive Collection captures, but were trying to get "Faces" captures done on the X0 as well so as to be able to use the best of both - did this ever happen?

2) Are you still working on PAL capture comparisons and if so, might you end up mixing PAL & NTSC sourced material, or would it be a separate PAL project?

3) Given Citizen's (and others') misgivings about temporal smoothing on both the DefCol & "Faces" sets, as well as the positive reaction to Dark/Sega's Special Collection transfer, would that set be another option you'd like to investigate, or are there:
a) other problems with that set?
b) no chances of further X0 capturing?

Apologies in advance if any of these seem redundant.

I just got Newsletter #1... it makes me want to weep with joy. This is really going to be an amazing product. You'll never hear "when will it be done?" from me now that I know just how much work you guys are putting into this.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I just read the fist newsletter too. Great stuff. These insights into the restoration techniques used by the X0project team, and people like mverta, are some of the best 'side effects' to come out of the various archive projects. There's a very handy tutorial/knowledge base that's building up.

I'm also particularly interested in hearing the teams reply to THX's above post, epsecially their opinions on the Japanese Special Collection laserdiscs that have got everyone excited over in the ***The Official Dark/Sega Special Collection*** Release Thread (Not an SE Transfer)

I remember it getting mentioned briefly in the past, so can you refresh our memories, or go into a bit more detail of this sets pro and cons over the Definitive and Faces sets?

Good to hear Beastly. The next newsletter will be out as soon as things are finalized. A couple of us have been out of town and unable to concentrate on the X0 Project.

THX, sorry about not responding before. I must have missed your post.

1. We are still working on Faces captures on the X0. At this point. as far as I know, we're using interim captures off another LD player just to see what we're up against. The plan though is to have caps from both versions to use if necessary. There are definitely strengths to both versions that we will want to use in the end.

2. We are looking into PAL captures, but haven't done much as of yet. There really isn't any PAL player out there with a clean enough composite signal to rival the X0 and its superior quality output. Even with the lower NTSC resolution, it still beats any PAL player we've seen.

3. Haven't seen this transfer yet so I can't say. Sounds promising though. We do have a set or two of the Special Collection LD's and we'd like to do X0 caps of them as well.
