god*** now I'm getting pissed off.

today I've had to

rejig the entire opening crawl and star destroyer pass. sometime in the past I'd deleted one of the files of this segment and have today had to recomposite the sequence from scratch.

grrrrrrr

then, mos eisley threw up a glitch due to frame rate issues so taking what I've recently learned re the flypast, I've applied it to this area but this now means the audio is off and needs remastering for all 6 tracks.

frustration knows no limits

have now muxed the first dvd.

it looks like there are some niggling sound issues which have come about from making the various soundtracks match my original sound file.

all of them seem to drift in and out of sync occasionally by about 5 frames in some places. fixable, but annoying and time consuming, however, the image has come out bloody marvellously. I'm really pleased with it. there are again one or two spots I might revisit and fix further. after all, if the sound needs rejigging anyway, I have the time. but we are soooo close I can almost taste it.

good news. the sound issue isn't so much of a disaster as I thought.

tweaking continues but it is not so much of a problem as originally envisaged.

trials and tribulations come to test me but I am nearly there, again!

mono sound has been remuxed, as has 1977 stereo and commentary tracks. the isolated score is done. and the pcm track has been resynced. just the 5.1 to tweak and re mux and I will cut a disc, finally

disc v2. issues still exist. the 5.1 sound is still off by up to 5 frames in a few places. have also identified a few bits that need further correction. they look lousy on TV. however, the 0verall colour balance is good and it looks very very impressive on my TV. Sony Wega 50hz btw which has been properly calibrated too.

other soundtracks are fine and the bit rate is good with no buffer underuns.

update.

I am in the process of re-doing the 5,.1 track from scratch, basically the old work file was becoming so patched, individual streams were getting out of sync compounding problems even further. I have resynced a new track up and am in the process of adding the bits of bobs to make it sing, but it is proving tougher than I thought to sync up a 5.1 track from 4 different sound sources.

grief what a crap three weeks its been.

what had happened is imagine this.

each channel is a seperate line able to be edited in the multi track editor.

when I've been dragging bits and bobs around to sync up, over time whats happened is that individual channels have had seperated streams pulled out of alignment and that makes it impossible to tug them back where they should have been because obviously, each channels waveform does not match each other due to individual channels discrete effects.

so, I had to redo it from scratch. that is now finished.

in the meantime, I have also tweaked a few more scenes, spotted a few errors that had slipped through the net and also came up with some more fixes to the final space battle that have been bugging the hell out of me.

I'm off to work now but upon my return in the am tomorrow I will start remuxing the master file etc to cut a new test disc.

cheers

Tellan,

Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck. Your attention to these details makes me think this will be a fantastic set.

I've got a question that I don't think I've seen addressed:

Are you using the official DVD version of the Death Star explosion? There is a blue pixelated haze surrounding the explosion (which has always bothered me). The G'Kar special edition should have a non-blue explosion.

Thanks,
Erik

every single imperial laser bolt in the final space battle has been rotoscoped and replaced.

the cockpit scenes in the falcon immediately after the destruction of alderaan have been completely redone and colour corrected due to some horrible blue and red casting to the flesh tones. much more natural look has been achieved.

tech dome was too bright so that's been muted down a bit.

certain star scenes have been redone because they have blown out details on the ships.

more blue casting has been removed on the tantive iv.

project logo now finished, see profile tag + project logo intro movie file done. see download link here.

for those interested, the layer break is between "terminate her immediately" and "okay chewie, cut in the sublight engines." it's a good natural break point, no wipes, no musical cues. super.

myspleen. segaflip has volunteered to post it on a.b.s.t good really as I haven't got a clue how to post on a binaries newsgroup.

about 8 or 9 people will be getting a disc directly because of the help they've given me over the course of the last year.

I grow tired of this...so it'll be the last time.

grrrr.

now I know why I should have bought a 5,.1 speaker rig for my computer. cut the test disc is the only way to test the 5.1 sound.

pluses.

menu's look bloody marvellous

menus' work completely, I got that part down cold first time.

film looks great. one teeny tiny one frame glitch mid way through but I doubt anyone but me will notice.

all other sound tracks are fine

minus

5.1 track still not right. odd areas where it goes loud then quiet. now on the computer it sounds fine so I am wondering if the AC3 encoder is doing it during compression. I am also doubting if it really is worth the grief. I could after all do it as a 2.0 track that sounds fine but after all the work, I just gotta try and make this happen.

so I will try a new encoder in the next few days once I've looked at the film all the way through to identify the problem areas and see where the problem lies.

one option is to AC3 the 2.0 PCM track to free up some space and try this 5.1 track as a 5.1 half bite rate DTS track which still makes it 300bps higher than an equivalent 5.1 dolby track.

Do you have any way to connect your computer via digital audio out to your sound system? It might be worth doing even if you have to move your computer into another room. That way you can bypass your sound card's decoders and you can test it out on your HT system without wasting time burning another disc.

In my experience, DTS always encodes better. I ran into some crappy DD encoders myself while working on my ROTS DVD. Always frustrating as hell.

the thing is. the wife on't allow the computer out of the room its in as its too noisy. I have to agree with her. I hang about 6 fans off this thing to keep it cool. so not an option. I'm surprised at the encoder though because it is the AC3 encoder that comes with scenarist.

aha,

clumsy sound editing on my part, particularly in the mos eisley area. lots of blends that faded in and out. that entire sequence has been streamlined.
