rock on. new system is setup and working and rattling along like a dream. god it's quick. dual core is an absolute dream when it comes to rendering etc. what took my old system 55 seconds, this thing does in 10.

by my estimate, a full render will take about 10 hours instead of the 49 it did previously.

test sequence of escape from tatooine.

color corrected and I've copied *note copied* adywans' star destroyer shot.

ie I recreated it myself using a new background digital plate etc.

Yeah, I noticed the planet's placement was somewhat lower to the screen on your shot than Adywan's...

well it's such a nice plate of tatooine, I wanted a bit more of it visible to be honest.

It's interesting to see these types of shots and see how an SE *could* have been done.

a consistent tattooine presentation.

ie the atmospheres. I'm aware there are still issues with the planet itself. but the stars are there, the bolts are there, engine glow etc. + I 've finally managed to make the atmosphere haze appear consitent in the six shots we see it.

Looks a lot better now Tellan. How is the rest of the edit coming along? Any closer to a release date?

What dual core system are you running now? Is it a core2 duo or an AMD X2 one? I'm thinking of upgrading mine soon but still unsure what chipset to go with. I was thinking of going back to AMD but the benchmark i have seen indicates that the Core2 duo are a lot faster when video rendering, but cost hell of a lot more, especially for a decent motherboard for the intel option.

I'm now past mos eisley. hooray!!!! first time in months. I'm up to alderaan destruction and I'm pulling something special up for that. I've been working on this frame by frame for about 2 days now.

jump cut no more!

I've gone from

P4 2.8 HT
1GB ram
fx 5200 gerforce card
1.2ters storage
21" monitor

to

intel duo core 2.4
2gb ram
8800gtx
1.5 ters storage
21" monitor

I fancied quad core but just couldn't afford it.

the duo core I've got is very cost effective regards the performance price curve + there is a price drop from intel in june which apparently will make the duo core 2.4 about £130 + VAT making it very affordable. if you aren't buying for a month or two, hang on and get it then. duo core's kill stone dead AMD in the video editing stakes at present.

the majority of the second half of the film is colour balancing rather than fixing anything per se. I need to make another pass at the lightsabers., the transparencies aren't quite there yet.

Tellan,

Beautiful - and even CORRECTED - "boom". What more could an OOT Purist ask for?

I take it this is from the bluescreen footage in Empire of Dreams? I'm glad to see you put it to good use. Just a month ago I was thinking someone should do this.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Author
Time
yup, it's the item from empire of dreams.

you have to flip it vertically to get it back in the right place. plus about the first four frames are missing so I used citizens version to give me the first few frames of the explosion. each frame was individually corrected in photoshop but even then there were about 4 frames I couldn't fix.

I'm revisiting this anyway and re-comping the blow up, alderaan, the starfield, the death star beam.

done! grief, two days for 3 minutes of footage but it was worth it.

god dammit jim, I'm a doctor not a video editor.

that's what it feels like sometimes folks. particularly when you are spending time correcting that which lucasfilm couldn't be bothered to do properly in the first place.

on a sidenote, yes I am aware there is some wierd artifacting on a few frames. it's caused by Vegas 7.0 and regardless of which codec is used. anyone care to shed some light on why it's happening because it is very inconsistent and happens in quite a few of the clips throughout the project. it doesn't even always appear in the same place twice when you output.

you'll see on the video clip. dammit, problem with uploading. my wireless connection has dropped back to basic throughput. yegods, its 1.30 am. I'l upload in the morning.

basically. it is not due to the codec. it is not compression artifacting but some kind of interference being displayed in clips.

at frames 2209, 2226, 2247, 2272, 2284.

as you can see, it affects a layer, not the whole clip. ie it is interference being caused by Vegas' own outputting. if I output again, similar appearance seen, but at different frames.

specific to certain clips. all clips are RGB when put into vegas project timeline in huffyuv codec. . none of the original clips have any visible problems when displayed on any other video playback programme, it is only within vegas that this wierdity is being introduced and even then, it does not consistently apply it, which implies some bug within the program rather than the clip itself. at least to my way of thinking anyway.

Ah, yes i have seen this before. It is actually a huffyuv codec bug and always seems to be original layer specific usually the result of the initial encode from MPEG" to avi . This also happens in Adobe premier. I originally used this codec and this would happen when rendering in premier. It would randomly happen and never usually the same frame twice. I switched to the lagarith lossless codec and the problem disappeared. And it never showed up in any media player either, but it isn't a bug within vegas.

one thing that may be relevant though. did you encode the mpeg files to huffyuv using virtualdub? i just tried some footage that i had problems with in after effects but this time using DVD2AVI and the problem has disappeared, so i'm now wondering if its a bug with virtualdub.

Also i noticed something in the clip. the first lightsaber shot. Did you use my clip for that shot and overlayed your saber over the top of it?

codec issue.

okay, I'll buy that for a dollar.

regards the ouput. yup, all my original output was done via virtualdub because I used a number of filters first prior to exporting to an avi. things like whitebalance etc.

second, nope, didn't use your shot as it happens, it seems two great minds have been working in parallel once again.

That was a seven layer composite.

I made a backplate of the left side of the falcon rec area so I had a clean background to overlay the lightsaber against. that allowed me to omit the really bad roto frames and get it more in line with the hilt.

then my new blade + glow got overlaid over the top.

Yep, it does.

One thing i did notice though is that it is very visible where you turn off the clean plate, it really jumps out at you, also for the first few frames there is a distinct wobble on the background. i had this problem when i first attempted mine. Instead of using a complete plate you could just use the plate to mask out only the section where the saber is, that way it becomes invisible. If you are using after effects then all you have to do is create an animated mask and mask the motion of the saber blade, then the glow hides it.

yeah, I found that out this morning when I looked at it. there's a lot of that in this film. the first few frames of a new scene have a wierd distortion / wobble to them. that's the last thing to sort for that single scene.

I'm gonna run a few tests and see if its virtualdub or vegas causing the codec to glitch.

I think it may be vegas doing something because where I'm getting the artifacting tends to be where the project file crashed often on the old machine being unable to cope with the project file size. more to follow.

allrighty, a few tests later.

it definitely looks like some sort of codec issue. I re-exported the clips in the new codec and they've disappeared. bizarre, but there you go. what I think is likely is its not the codec all on its own per se. its just a combination of huffyuv with vegas.
