Is this set different from the one Moth3r (and Citizen?) originated from?

I think the only difference is the LDs have english audio, not french or german (and no german crawl). So this was a lot easier to transfer. This transfer has the original audio and not the audio of another set. I don't know if you can hear the difference though.

From what I've seen, the video on the Coffret LD set is from the same source used for the French THX LDs, German THX LDs and UK widescreen VHSs, and shares the same audio source as the UK widescreen VHSs in that it's time compressed so pitch is preserved but the dynamic range has been compressed so loud explosions don't have any real 'impact' and just merge into any other loud noises going on.

Hmmm, that sucks. I bought this LD set especially for the audio!!!! I didn't compare the audio but now you mention it I remember you made this comment before. Maybe I should not have deleted my Definitve Collection wav files... Maybe in version ~2~ I will capture 5 times and give the video the ><Citizen merge/average treatment ©®><, add the original crawl for a new hope and add both DC audio and mono track. All I have to do now is get my hands on a 2950!!!! A shame they cost so much...

"add the original crawl for a new hope"

Did you generate one?

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

Change of plan!

I now have a pioneer cld-2950. I'm busy recapturing. I'll try to stay as close to the laserdisc image as possible. That means no sharpening and noise filters will be used.

Nice. I just compared your clip to the good old TR47 version I have, on my Mac and it's great to see that your capture is every bit as good and the starfields are much sharper, with the stars very vibrant and defined - and as you said this clip isn't even full quality. I'm a PAL user myself so I'll be interested to see your progress on this. There's also PAL versions from Moth3r and Citizen, so the more the merrier. Keep up the good work...

Oh, one more thing. Will you delete the french subtitles in the black bar or keep those?

They will be deleted. I can't make it anamorphic and keep the subtitles (only half the subs will remain). But I don't want to keep the subtitles anyway. I'll use english subs for the greedo and jabba scenes.

Arnie, are you doing any menus for your transfers? And what kind of a timeframe are we talking about for this three movie project? Also, do you have some point of reference when capturing? Do you have any of the already available transfers like the TR47, Cowclops V2 or any of the PAL transfers (Moth3r, Citizen) to compare to?

I know, a lot of questions, but I'm always exited about a PAL project...

They'll probably have menus (my first version had). I'll be very busy for the next 3-4 weeks so I don't have much time to work on the transfer but I think it'll be finished by the end of the year. I do have editdroid, moth3r and citizen transfers. But I won't really compare them to those. I won't do any sharpening or denoising (I think the side effects are to great). It'll be pretty much as it is plays on my 2950. The contrast will be higher though otherwise the image looks a bit foggy in some scenes. Tomorrow I get Wer-Al_Zwowe's set so I can do a double capture.

I can assure you, they look great on a 2950. But you'll see it yourself tomorrow.

A new release of Star Wars is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Update:
I'm half way through capturing the LDs. (Multiple captures to average).
Yesterday I bought (75 euro's damn it) a Creative Soundblaster with optical S/PDIF in on ebay so I can make a bit-accurate capture of the audio.
I still don't know what to do with the audio. A PCM track would probable be most people's choice but then the maximum video bitrate then will be +/- 8200 kbps. If I can make a DTS track (at 768 kbps) which sounds just as good as the PCM track the maximum video bitrate can be +/- 9000 kbps. I wonder if I feed the 2 channels (with matrixed surround information) of the bit-accurate capture to the DTS encoder the surround information will be preserved, or I have to make discrete channels of the PCM track and feed those to the DTS encoder. Any suggestions???

Do you have any screencaps to post on here? Also I don't know much about sound but I do know that the PCM sound on the good old TR47 set is great, really powerful, heavy bass and very crisp. So going with the PCM couldn't be a bad decision.

I'm so interested in this project of yours, with this being the best available PAL laserdisc edition of Star Wars. Should be a great project.

Keep up the good work...
