Can anyone read Japanese?

Author
Time

So I found this picture on the internet. The characters are very recognizable as the heroes of the "Belgariad" a fantasy book series from the mid-80s that I'm a big fan of.

I'm trying to figure out what this pic is from. The author's website doesn't mention any Japanese editions.

If anyone can tell me what this damn thing says, I'd be grateful.

Yes, anyone can read Japanese if they work hard enough.

The real question, of course, is can anyone turn Japanese?

I really think so.

A fellow Eddings fan!  I like the Belgariad very much, but I have to confess that I think the writing in the Elenium and the Tamuli is a little better.

I'd be interested in knowing where this image comes from and what it says too.

Shhhhh!  We're making lame jokes in this thread.

My wife could read Japanese a long time ago, but I don't think she remembers much.

That was not a joke.

You might go looking else where to solve this mystery. There are plenty of Japanese people on the internet, I am just not sure how many hang around here. I bet if you find some anime forum, you could post an inquiry from them and get a quick answer.

I'm learning Japanese, but I'm still in the very beginning stages & unfortunately can't help you with this.

I agree with trying another board.  There are several people on the Godzilla forum I go to (monsterzero, currently hosted at scifijapan.com) who can read japanese and answer questions like this quite often (well, it's usually about giant monster related things, but you get the idea).

Yeah... bu that would require work.

A google search... registering on a forum... copy and pasting my Original post.

Just typing the list of what I'd need to do makes me tired... ... ...

That does sound like a lot of work.  Wouldn't it just be easier to learn Japanese?

I have an idea that would make things even easier.  We all know that speaking Japanese is 500 times easier than reading Japanese.  So I would suggest you simply learn to speak Japanese, then fly to Japan with that image and ask people on the street to read it to you.

Come to think of it, the simplest thing to do would be to track down the original creator, who presumably would be able to read it, having written it.

I'll try to think of more helpful ideas later.

I think the story in the Elenium is less predicatble/Tolkienian, and the world is more sophisticated and compex.

But its hard to  get over our first love, and I read Belgariad in the 6th grade and it changed my life (which is admitedly easy to change in the 6th grade).

It could be a visual novel adaptation, just a guess. haha.

I had the same thought.  I read the Elenium and the Tamuli first, as a friend lent them to me.  Then I went back and read the Belgariad.  I enjoyed it, but it never gripped me in the same way as the other too did.

I think reading the later trilogies spoilt the Belgariad for me a little really, as I was expecting the more accomplished writing Eddings did later on.  It was for this reason that I could never bring myself to read the Mallorean.  I did like Belgarath the Sorceror though, but Polgara the Sorceress just wasn't the same, as I never really found Polgara a likable character.

LOL, nicely done Frink.  Great song too!

For those interested, I've been using Nifty translation for the last few years and it seems consistantly better at translating Japanese text than Babelfish.  Sometimes though it pays to use both or have a Japanese friend translate text for you as it is sometimes hard to tell exactly what is going on.

Sorry, it will only work with copied/pasted text, so no good for this situation unfortunately. Just thought it might be useful to someone.

Cheers.

We are all a bunch of jerks. I love it.

It is becoming clear that this is no place to ask for help. LOL.

I can't believe you have all missed the easiest, simplest solution. All you need to do is invent a time machine, then go back in time to a period when Karyudo was a more active member on the forum. About three to four years should do it. Then just start a thread by posting your original query above, and wait for him to answer.

"Guardians of the West"

By David Eddings

 The Malloreon Series Book 1

That is what is says in best English translation I can do.

I am not Japanese, I don't speak it, but I do love a challenge. The Kanji symbols on the big white text on the left side going down are.

First Symbol = "West"

Second Symbol = alternative; direction; person;

Third Symbol = http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E3%81%AE

(Not sure if this character indicates identity or is used as a Noun modifier)

Forth Symbol = Big; Larg

Fith Symbol =

Sixth Symbol = king; magnate; rule;
