I've long had a problem with digital things that I've only recently gotten over. Also, tapes just survive better in my hand than easily-scratchable discs. I hated being forced into the formats, but widescreen and anime has made it a moot point.
As for preserving the SE, I've never liked it since ROTJ was in theatres. However, since the whole point of this site is preserving the version we love most, it seems natural to preserve the SE for those who, for some reason or another, prefer it.
I understand how you feel my Dad and Brother both have moved into the High Definition format including the D-VHS format - BTW he has captured my LD's with his JVC S-VHS Recorder DH30000 - THE D-VHS versions look almost like the actual laserdisc - better then either set (IF you want it to look just like the LD) as far as overall quality - BUT you need a D-VHS to play them and the blank tapes cost $20 EACH
SO yes a VHS (well a Digital-VHS
) can really look better than an CAPTURED, FILTER and ENCODED DVDr version
