Hitchhiker's Guide trailer online

Pretty cool trailer, even though it shows/tells you very little. Being one of the few geeks on the planet who has NOT read the book, and having only seen parts of the BBC miniseries as a kid, I have no idea what to expect.

I do think its interesting that this comes out only a couple of weeks before ROTS. Serendipity? It worked for Neo in '99.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

I havent read the book either: it was on freshman level reading list, so I didn't bother.

Oh God. NO!!!

Don't ruin the book....

And Disney?!?!?!?!!?!? AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Don't see this movie, the books are so well-written! It's the hilarious writing that made it funny. A movie would SUCK!

My stance on revising fan edits.

Maybe it will turn out good like LOTR did.

Otherwise, it may be a horrid mockery of everything HGttG fans know and love about the book.

The latter is the more probable.

Too true.

If the movie suck, I might be forced to actually read the book.

Howdy, long time no see.

I've read the book and enjoyed it very much, althought I wouldn't call myself a real "fan". This movie will be just a movie, it won't add anything to those who have read the book, and it will entertain those who haven't read it. But if anyone asked me about doing or not doing the movie, I'd say no.

Don't make it sound like torture; HG is actually a fairly light read, and much lighter than LOTR.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

at the risk of not sounding like my hyper informed closet geek self, what is the book about? I never bothered to read it, and would like a summation that doesnt ruin the book. No spoilers please...

It's the adventures of Arthur Dent and his pals into the universe, improbability, and of course... 42.

Basically, it's like a Battlestar Galactica meets Fawlty Towers. Good old british non-sensical silly humor with some sci-fi on it. Source of some geeky cultural references, such as "42", the "babilon fish" (translating feature) and the paranoid android.

I have a hard time getting into new stories. The only reason I've read 25 novels this year is because most of them were Starwars.

The first Hitchhiker's guide was published in the early eighties wasn't it?

The meaning for everything. The answer to every question. And it's... 42.

Well I'm not so sure, but I think it was a radio program written by Douglas Adams in the late 70s, and then transcribed to a book in 1980 I think, which became quite successful and became a comedy mini-series on british TV in 1981. It's a trilogy in five books . I've read only the first one and a few chapters of the second one, until I became kinda busy and forgot about it, I'll eventually read all five. This movie, as the TV show, will be based on the first book I belive (with some modifications I do not approve, such as Malkovitchs character, a new one).

While I'm scared of how it's going to turn out (how often does that not happen in the adaptation of well-known books?), I'm sure I'll see it, and likely without my wife as she's not a big fan of scifi films either. Any of you in the Chicago area need a viewing pal?

You could tell her it's a comedy, and not say anything about the sci-fi of it.

It might be hard to hide her from the trailers. That and the title of it alone kinda gives it away. Thanks for the thought, though.

I can already tell this movie is NOT going to be good.

The thign that was good about HHGTTG was the brilliant writing. It was so hilariouslly written that you couldn't help but laugh at everything in it.
You simply cannot transcribe it into a movie form.

I guess the deciding factor of whether I'll actually *see* it of not if the accents. If they don't have British accents, then I shalln't see it.

Well, here's the cast list. Pretty good mix of U.S. and Brit. But some might pull off accents pretty well. Who knows?

Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent), Mos Def (Ford Prefect), Zooey Deschanel (Trillian), Bill Nighy (Slartibartfast), Sam Rockwell (Zaphod Beeblebrox), Warwick Davis (Marvin the Paranoid Robot), John Malkovich (Humma Kavula), Steve Pemberton (Mr. Prosser); other cast not announced yet.

Me thinks.

Ewoks are cute, but they are the bane of my SW existence.

You have to have an Englishman as Marvin; lines like "Would you like me to stick my head in a bucket of water?" just don't come out right with an American accent.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.
