What do you HATE about the EU? — Page 29

I tried reading "Tarkin."

it opens with a chapter describing why Peter Cushing's uniform looked the way it did. Very detailed. Very dull. Stopped reading, went back to library.

Again. That's not EU. That's "canon" now. That post belongs in General Star Wars Thoughts or some new thread about the new canon.

I don't think that canonicity is enough of a distinction to warrant a separate thread.

Well EU is defined as everything that is not a film, canon or non-canon.

James Luceno is one author whose SW books I'm not even going to bother with in the future.

What else did he write that you dislike?

It's not that I particularly dislike the guy. I just have zero interest in reading books from a guy who is almost certainly a PT fanboy.

The EU is dead. The stuff coming out now does not fall under that now defunct classification.

The EU could be brushed off because it was never on par with film canon.

Now all future books and comics will share the same level of authority as the films. If that doesn't warrant a new discussion, I don't know what does.

I don't really care what the new continuity brigade says. The films are canon, everything else is EU. That doesn't mean I won't indulge in them, but they're still EU.

Until they change their minds, that is.

That will simply never be true. No matter what they say, Disney/Lucasfilm will never put that much stock in the books/comics/cartoons. The money is in the movies.

If they have a plot for Ep VIII and it contradicts a book or "Rebels" I guarantee no one in charge will give a hoot.

Exactly.

LFL's whole statement of "Oh, we're forming a "story group" (or something), so everything we make from now on will be the same level of canon" is nothing more than marketing speak.

Just like how the Thrawn books were the first "official" continuation of the story, right?

Fool me once.

What I hate is the very concept of "canon". I don't care if one story is consistent with another or not, I just want a story that's good.

This book depicts Lowbacca -- Chewie's nephew -- as being rendered incapable of communicating with the non-Wookiee teachers and students at Luke's Jedi academy on Yavin IV after he loses his translator droid in the jungle.

Why is this so bad, you may ask? Well, it's because of one little thing: neither he nor anyone else in the goddamn book ever thinks to using writing as a means to communicate -- that's why! What, am I supposed to believe Wookiees are illiterate, that they wouldn't bother to acquaint themselves with the writing system of the greater galactic community?! Or is Luke just too cheap to stock the temple with some pens and paper?

WHY MUST YOU SUCK SO MUCH, KJA?! WHY!?

Well although I generally don't care about the official canon in a sense that just because someone labels it as "canon" I should accept it. Without doubt I will ignore stuff that I don't like.

Still I can't help myself but to care about the consistency when it come to the stuff that I do like, especially if they are dealing with the same characters and events.

How little mystery was allowed to remain. There's lots of "The Force is objectively this way" crap.

Luke's Mother

The EU can never replace the Canon of the films.  Nashira of the white current never happened. Her name was actually Padme and she was from Naboo and couldn't use the force.

Why LFL allowed the black fleet trilogy to be written along with how terribly written it is is anyone's guess.

What did she ever do to you?

The EU can never replace the Canon of the films.

Yes it can, no it can't.

Nashira of the white current never happened. Her name was actually Padme and she was from Naboo and couldn't use the force.

Both are true, both are false.

Why LFL allowed the black fleet trilogy to be written along with how terribly written it is is anyone's guess.

This question can be asked for at least 50% of all SW novels ever written.

Will continuity ever really intrfeer with someone being able to tell a goood story under this new regime?

Also, if The Force Unleashed counts as EU then I hate that too, mostly because I'm carp at games and found it difficult.

Oh, it does, believe me -- it does
