2004 DVD - the reason why they redid this wipe? I have no idea, I know the scenes before it had recomposited starfields in some shots and they colorized the rank badge etc. but why redo this wipe?

They redid this wipe because that shot was recomposited in 2004 as well. Look at the edges of the officers face - you can see the blue spill in the original and 97SE. He's also slightly cropped on the edges, which could mean that they didn't have the original elements for this scene and simply rotoscoped a new starfield behind them while slightly cropping the edges to get rid of the blue spill.

Thanks for that! Helps out a lot!

I'll take wookieegroomer shots of those frames and add your 97s.

Do it, it's unfortunate that the 97s are so heavily cropped though.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I see, that explains it. ;) the starfield in this particular shot looks like the original in terms of the positioning which made me doubt it a little. There's probably more of these redone wipes where they recomped stuff for the DVD...

Btw. that StarDestroyer bridge - shot, may go to history for the most crushed black levels I have ever seen in a transfer ever! :)

This shot was recomped in 2004:

(the easisest way to spot it, is the different timings/positions of the TIE's)

The 2004-wipe for this shot look almost identical to the '97-wipe this time.

(notice the slightly different position of the composites in the '04-DVD)

'97 SE - timed against your comparison:

The actual wipe look the same, it is just that the Yoda-footage is slightly bigger and in a different position compared to the footage of the Stardestroyer.

This shot was remade for the 2004 DVD and is not on your list:

these two aren't synced up though, the thin purple lasers were green in earlier transfers, and in the '97 SE as well. (another GOUT-flaw)

And that change makes another wipe needed...

'97 SE - timed against your comparison::

This one could be a 2004 change, I wasn't able to tell because of the horrible motion-smear on my '97-source.

I checked all of these and they are incorrectly marked, the garbage mattes were not eliminated from these in '97, if they ever was:

And they're still left in the 2004 DVD in these shots, you just don't see them unless your equipment is calibrated wrong. ;)

Looks interesting. I'm gonna have to check it out tomorrow when I'm nor´t so drunk and can actually focus on it.

So should we remove the garbage matte fixes that are just color issues?

Or at least add a comment that it's from the official comparisons and there's a possibility that it isn't true.

I would say yes to, no reason to point that out, and if you do we are going to have a lot more to add then, I would say just keep to the actual changes, it would make looking things up a lot easier.

Ah, that sounds nice, I envy you.

I can also understand that you want to preserve the official comparisons, didn't you have them separately stored before?

You could also include this shot of the holograms as well.

Oh, yeah, that's quite apparently recomped. They're all in different positions relative to the background.

Here's another SE change, it happens in the clip starting at frame 147763 in the SE. Although it's hard to tell, the SE starts a few frames earlier (at least in th cockpit) and as such ends a few frames earlier too. It's another one of those changes I thought was too trivial to worry about changing myself, but the list wouldn't be complete without it.

You can clearly see that it is a recomp on the starfield. It's a '97 alteration btw.

This is never going to end, is it? ;-)

Then the Blu-rays will come out, they'll swear they haven't changed anything, but we'll find even more things...

I think it's taking us longer to log the changes than it did to actually change them!

Maybe someday. ;)

Here's another '97 SE change:

Original

Notice the bad cockpit-matte, the black part covering the window to the right of Threepio.

SE

Just a few screen-caps from the JSC if you like to use them instead.

The correct green lasers:

The differences are really hard to spot. What are they?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

You can mostly tell by the objects being in a slightly different position relative to each other.

Yes, like Harmy said, ship-starfield-asteroids are all in a slightly different position relative to each other, the original also have visible mattelines on the asteroids.

Another one of those 2004 DVD re-comps in Empire, not many original fx-shots left in these films now... both of these are from the same scene, it's at the end of the film just before they go to light-speed.

How about the Copyright Date change in the credits?  (and all those digital artist mentioned, see you've got some credits in the ESB picasa)

And wonder if the 2006 dvd credits match the 81 print, as mthr's 77 SW has different spacing:

^ That is a nice find none, never thought about the GOUT being basically the '81 print with the '77 opening spliced in.

I wonder why the end titles were redone for the '81 re-release.
