well i have a bit of news about the Falcon, and it isn't good. Finally the seller has decided to contact me and Paypal. He said that it was posted 2 weeks ago and that the post office has mislaid it. He has sent proof of postage to Paypal and they are satisfied that he has indeed posted it and closed the claim. Now the bad news is that he sent it via uninsured mail which has really fucked me off because the post office offers almost nothing in compensation when sent uninsured. it doesn't mater how valuable the item is supposed to be all they will offer me is £30 for losing it. The seller had proof that he had contacted the post office prior to contacting me to find out where it is and they can find no trace of it. So that's it. the falcon is gone. I'm really pissed off at the seller for sending something so valuable without the postal insurance just to save a couple of pounds (which the amount in postage i paid would have more than covered this). So this has set me back a lot now.

I really am sorry to hear that though, ady... can you follow this up with the post office?

What i dont get about this: Why then did he talk about 'being in the hospital' and stuff, prior to this, if he indeed already had sent the falcon? This all smells very fishy to me...

there has to be something conflicting with the header on your system. could be a codec issue as mentioned. you can use MediaInfo to check all the details of video file. here's a screenshot of the info for the trailer:

as you can see the header is correct.

Are we sure about this? I can't believe that mplayer/ffmpeg is just imagining this up out of thin air! Where should this info come from if not somewhere from within the file? Maybe someone with more experience than me can find out more?

... and i dont want to go on the dev-mailing list  of mplayer with something trivial like this (oss devs can get kind of annoyed ;)

Well, in the trailer only the pixel aspect ratio is set apparently(?) (to square pixels), mplayer seems to want the display aspect ratio too... If you set the display ar to 2.35:1 with e.g. mpeg4modifier, it will display correctly.

Whether mplayer is at fault or the header is lacking I cannot say, though... But it's an easy fix.

Yeah i also know of a lot of simple ways to fix this problem for me personally. I am just worried a little bit about other people who may not have enough technical experience and then will turn away because of this if they see a stretched image and think "WTF is this?".  You know?

That sucks. How soon do you think you'll be able to get another one?

Also, this is kinda off-topic, but how is the Wampa puppet coming?

Hmm... Ady, you might consider running the trailer (and future clips) through mpeg4modifier, since it does no harm and fixes it for those players that have problems with the ar.

Not saying it's your fault, it might be the players that's at fault - but the fix literally takes seconds, and then everyone should see it the correct way. :)

Well Is there an alternative? What can we do? How much money exactly did you lose? What about the "He was in the hospital" story? Does it coincide with the date of the item being sent?

i lost just over £200. to be fair to the seller all the proof he provided does indeed seem to genuine. paypal informed me that he provided receipts for al model he posted on the same date as mine, which everyone has received some time ago and he also provided proof that he had indeed been in hospital form the 2nd may (i purchased the model on the 3rd) to the 9th and posted the item first class on the 12th. he said he hadn't replied to me emails because he was waiting to hear back from the post office so he could give me a better idea of what had happened to the model. If only he had paid the extra few quid then all this wouldn't have been a problem.

It seems others have problems with xvids and mplayer

here's a bit of information i found

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/how-to-add-the-correct-aspect-ratio-flag-in-an-avi-file-t318488.html

interesting to note about the later XVID codecs supporting AR. try updating to the latest XVID codec to see if that fixes the problem because all of my Vids are encoded with the latest version of koepi's Xvid codec v 1.2.1

PS: ... and btw: I hate this 'visual' post writing editor. Is there a way to activate/see the usual 'code' based editing as known from other forums? ("[quote]" etc. instead of these visual blocks, which i seem to be incapable of managing ;) Or maybe i'm the only one having a hard time inserting a quote at the right point or deleting a image/quote from a block.

It's something with the pixel aspect ratio.  Almost all of Ady's clips have displayed in a stretched 1.78:1 AR in QuickTime for me on my Mac, because QuickTime tends to ignore pixel AR for AVI files and display them as square pixels.  My solution is to play them in VLC, which works beautifully, but since I hate VLC's interface, I re-encoded the trailer to h.264 MP4, which QuickTime displays properly, using HandBrake.  That's the one I uploaded to YouTube, as well.

thats really strange because it plays in the correct aspect ratio for me in quicktime. i wonder if its a problems with cross platform xvid?

Well, mplayer uses a form of ffmpeg. Quicktime on the mac probably uses it's own codec? So that won't help.

I don't suppose your paypal account is linked to a credit card account?

Because if it is it's also a credit card transaction and would be covered by card insurance, you might even be able to retract the payment if that was the case.

Yeah, really... Here, it only costs $1 per $100 of insurance. A mere pittance! I'm sure it is similar in the UK. And now, whether they'd say so or not, this guy has indirectly thrown away what was a lot of donation money from members here as well, so it's sort of a setback for a lot of people because he was a cheapskate. Very sad to hear. I can't imagine the frustration.

So Ady, how far does the loss of the Falcon set you back? How soon do you think you'll be able to get another one?

Also, how are the other models, like the Wampa puppet, coming?

Hi Ady, I dont suppose you have checked out the revell easy-kit of the falcon, it has a major flaw - the height of the 'side walls' are too high. This is easily rectified. I bought the model over 2 years ago and was well into the modification but i shelved the project cause the wife and I had kid no.2.

I just havent had time to get back to the project. I could post a couple of pictures to show how easy it is to mod.

This kit is still kicking about in the shops for about £30.

it's ok it all sorted now, thanks to a certain member of these boards ( i won't say who just in case they want to remain anonymous). A new falcon has been ordered from overseas so should be here in a couple of weeks

I'm starting to build the Wampa in the week. I've finalised the design i want and have been working out how to build the frame and articulation along with just how much of the Wampa i need to build. I may be posting some short "making of" video blogs as things progress

onto another note. i noticed something when i was planning out the model for the Hoth hangar as you can see here:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

the hangar in the last shot needs to be extended. Looks like the new hangar model set is going to be a little bigger than i thought

Ady do you have the "Art of SW the Empire Strikes Back" book? It has blueprints of the Hoth Base. There are only three alcoves on the right side (As you are facing from the outside looking in) and four on the left side.
