Great clip, Ady! I really like that one of the x-wings gets destroyed adds more suspense!

So right after the generator is destroyed, when Han and Leia are running through the passage ways to the millenium falcon shouldnt the hallway lights not work? Or are we assuming that this generator was only for the shields protecting the base?

Even if this is true, I think it would be interesting, if possible to have the lights blink on and off as they are running through the hallway. If that is not possible, to darker the hallway. To me it always seemed to be too much light and should be darker in the base.

The same effect would be interesting for when Darth Vader is in the rebel command center.

Thanks!

Geez, everyone seems to be a critic. I think the explosion looks fine. Hey Ady about how far along are you with this project. I am not asking for when you will be done, but your current stauts. 20-30%

Sorry I am a bit late with this.

The first picture of the lightsabre is really nice with the clean up and the flare of the blades removed as well as the background lokking much better.

The shot of the ion cannon is fantastic and really beautifuly to look at.  Your version with the color correction is far far superior with incredible detail.  The added mountains in background only enchances the scene and the electrical bolt looks really cool.  Still have to see the video clip version.

Well done to all involved.

BEST....PREVIEW....CLIP....EVER!!  :)

I wasn't expecting all that when I clicked onto your link Adywan.  I thought it was just going to be a brief excerpt of your ION Cannon 'firing', which alone would have been great! (with the Turret Gun present and corrected I see)

Instead, we got a full 41 seconds of 'answers', wrapped-up in pure effects magic!  Many thanks for that.

F-I-N-A-L-L-Y, this sequence shows the kind of impact that was always possible here.  I love it!  And along the way, a lot of bothersome questions have been put to rest now -

It seems in the end, you've succeeded in RETAINING the overall original 'look' and 'feel' of the first 2 'Tyrant' shots, to a large degree, while making some ingenious enhancements to them.  Making the Hoth Planet bigger in the frame, so that the Stardestroyers are CLOSER to it by this point, is a huge improvement that really shows the 'Tyrant' is pointing more DIRECTLY at the Planet now, to tie-in with where the escaping 'Transport' / X-Wings approach it from (and the Hoth Planet itself looks excellent).  And Monroville will be very pleased (as I am, since I didn't really expect it) that you DID go the extra mile, and totally changed the SIDE-view 'interior' into the FRONT of a 'Bridge' for the 'Tyrant', as he'd suggested!

I also see that since the earlier 'Fleet approaching Hoth' shot, that you eventually chose to have the ships be deployed into a more 'surrounding', spread-apart manner, after all....  After previously being disappointed with these 2 particular 'Tyrant' shots over the years, I am now VERY satisfied with your chosen outcome, and of course, the shots of the ION Cannon firing, onwards, have turned out wonderfully too.  (What an improvement with the new 'electrical' laserbolt in the end....and the 'Tyrant' firing back adds a lot to the scenes too!)

I note that the 'Executor' isn't shown 'hanging back a little' somewhere during all this though, but I realise it doesn't necessarily need to be in the area of any of these shots, as things stand....although I guess it could be accomodated in part or in whole, into one or more of the 'Transport approaching the 'Tyrant' / getting past the 'Tyrant' shots....

Which brings me to the final shot of the 'Transport' and remaining X-Wing speeding up into 'Hyperspace'....  I'm sure doubleofive will be as delighted as me, at how well this particular idea of his has been executed....  It looks fabulous!

You've surpassed yourself on all this Adywan. Well done!

There is a couple of very little things that I'd like to bring up though, and I'm pleased that doubleofive put up his recent 'comparisons', so I can show what I mean -

In the middle 'comparison' shot shown above, where we see Captain Lennox looking out at the (now approaching!) Hoth Planet....it seems that a hint of the 'curvature' of the Hoth Planet should be seen in the TOP-RIGHT of the LEFT window too, at this point.  The way it currently looks has a sort of 'optical illusion' that seems not quite right, because the 'curvature' looks to be too 'lined-up' at EXACTLY where the TOP-RIGHT corner-edge of the LEFT window-frame is.  Would you consider having the Hoth Planet element start it's subtle 'movement' from a little further along to the LEFT to begin with, so that we see a definate hint of the 'atmosphere' in that TOP-RIGHT bit of the LEFT window, before it is then obscured by the window frame?  This would also really help to reflect the look of the original shot (which was wrong in other ways) a bit more too, which showed the 'atmosphere' over 2 of the windows.  I think this would really be a nice touch.  Failing that, would you consider moving the Hoth Planet element over to the RIGHT a little instead, to begin with, which would again remove this 'optical illusion'?  Either way would work.

Finally, in these 'comparison' shots above, it seems that the window 'edging' seen on the RIGHT-hand side of 2 of the windows is NOT 'parallel' all the way up....  (One is just behind Captain Lennox's back, and the other is just in front of his approaching officer's face)  Shouldn't these be the same thickness all the way along?

Whatever you decide, this whole sequence is a triumph, compared to before!  :)

Looks great. Enjoyed reading the triva track on the last release. When is empire due though?

Author

Welcome aboard Prog5000, there's a while to go yet, as there's still lots for Adywan to complete.  Hopefully, it might be before the end of 2009 though.

Author

I was assuming it is due to be done around Christmastime this year.

Author

Yeah, this is looking to be incredible. Will it be in 1080 format, of just DVD quality?

Author
Time

Can you burn a 720p movie on a standard DVD? I am guessing there would not be enough space and it would not be full resolution, right?

Author

Nope. The best quality you could hope for using normal DVD technology would be DVD-9 quality. However, I believe there is a way to burn a blu-ray image onto a DVD-9 disk which plays on BD players. Ady's 1080p versions of the Saga use that method, I think. That would be the only way to keep the quality short of the actual file or a real Blu-ray disk.

Wow, Adywan. This latest clip is a HUGE improvement over the original scene. I love how the ships jump to hyperspace, and the new look of the ion cannon blast is way better. Love the x-wing getting destroyed, also. Just the right amount of effects without making it overwhelming. I do agree with ImperialFighter in regards to the curvature of the planet, and also the window edges. Although I may have not have noticed the window edges without him pointing it out, I can definitely see what he is talking about now that I see it. And the planet's curvature does look a bit "off" in that first window. Boy, ImperialFighter has the eyes of a Hawk. Overall, an incredible improvement to the scene. I wasn't expecting another clip so soon. What a surprise!

Hmm.... Yes.......Yes.......

I like what you've done here Adywan. But I'm gona be the guy who points out everything so no one else has to.

Pros

- Very nice ion effect. Not too different to be noticeable and straight to the point just like the original. Also the addition of the first two ion shots was a good touch.

- Warping out. Nice touch!

Cons

- The activity. It's probably me, but the amount of activity in that one shot with the X-wing getting blown up and the added Star Destroyer lasers kind of throws the focus off from the Ion Bolts as they make way to the Star Destroyer. I personally think the shot is better without the X-wing blowing up since the 'triumphant' music piece fits more with the fact that they every craft made it out. It also makes for a good shift in tone when things are looking up at the start compared to what happens during the ground battle.

- The X-Wing warping out. I know you saw this coming, but that X-Wing looks very two dimensional compared to the very 3-dimensional transport.

A good solid effort once again by Adywan. Keep them coming!

Hmm.... Yes.......Yes.......Yess!!!!

Fantastic work Adywan, as usual!

I,m sorry Jeyl but I don't see anything negative with what Ady has done, the X-Wing looks fine to me, in fact it kinda impesses me that the Empire actually hits something, unlike the stormtroopers in ANH & remember Empire is a 'darker' movie anyway, never mind the triumphant music.

And on to warping. Warping!

What is warping?

Bending or melting of plastic or steel?

Star Trek terminolology of going into Lightspeed, perhaps?

Oh yes Jeyl, I think I know what you're talking about,......no the jump to lightspeed looks perfect.

A fantastic effect sequence once again by Adywan. Keep them coming!

Works perfectly for me. I agree that the one X-Wing getting hit adds to the suspense. The music still works in a sense that the rebels managed to get out of this tight situation.

I didn't notice the window thing at all myself. Didn't pause the scene though, I just watched it at normal speed 3 times and it all looked good there.

I really can't wait for this edit. I believe it may actually surpass ANH:R. And no matter what ILM dish out for the blu-ray release, there's no way there're gonna top what Ady is doing here. His versions are the new definitive editions.

Criticisms are a form of evil, aren't they Jaitea? Even I don't think he would take my recent comments as negative, because that's not what they are meant to be. I think Adywan is lucky to have a fan base who are open to making suggestions and criticisms and not constantly be bombarding him with 'yes men' like phrases and praises like yours. That's what Lucas likes to surround himself with.

But who would surround theirself with "no-men"? I doubt anything would get done. I think most of us are yes-men at the workplace.

I was just going to say...Lucas surrounding himself with "yes men" is what got us into this mess in the first place!

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Sevb32, you misunderstand. Supporting Adywan's work and criticizing it is not the same thing as your so-called 'no-men'.

Ady, when do you think it's ready? A month? 6 months? A year?

i thought i'd better post this clip as there has been a lot of discussion about this scene. But this will definitely be the last one until the trailer. again the audio is a temp track so please no more comments about the levels of the fx etc. Most of the live action shots aren't the final versions but you'll have to wait until ESB:R is released to see those. Don't want to spoil everything. lol

ION CANON 720p XVID

Looks pretty good.  the only thing I'd recommend is adding just a little bit of noise to the SD viewport.  It looks too static and has sort of an artificial composite look even though the set was real.

You probably are aware of this since "Most of the live action shots aren't the final versions" but I thought constructive comments are always welcome by you.

Just watched the new clip ady, brilliant Job! My only concern is that the X-wing that gets destroyed; I had to play it a couple of times to catch it. The problem is that the x-wing and it's destruction is somewhat hidden amongst all the ion cannon and star destroyer fire, and it doesn't help being so close to the rebel transport ship either which is titanic in comparison. I showed it to a couple of people an they didn't catch it at first either.

In real life it would happen so fast so you wouldnt be able to catch it all. It makes rewatching it so much more fun!

I think it's perfectly fine.

Ady: while it would be kinda cool to add some minor detail to the "plateau" shot (with the first shot of the rebel transport), it's not really necessary.  It would be neat in a "train set/ military diorama" sort of way, in that you could see the overhead "blueprint" of just where everything is.

I guess it would be more like this:

(1)
you might not have actual "runways" on Hoth, but the point is that even from high altitude, when you have no clouds and snow to reflect sunlight, large objects like the ion cannon and shield generator would still stand out, and large spread-out things like the trench line would show up as well.

(2) http://www.flickr.com/photos/photophill/3295664805/in/pool-airport_aerial_shots
(this is from low Earth orbit - granted, it is a city, but you can still see details of human activity/presence)

(4) http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&um=1&q=aerial+airport+snow&btnG=Search+Images

Again, while it would be cool to see such detail, overall I think the sequence is fantastic as-is and I would rather you work on the rest of the film.
