I made a few tests on my own to further enhance the Purists Edition V3. Especialy the DC Footage that was upscaled.
I used A.I. Enhanced tools to upscale and here is a compare picture.

There’s just far too much artifacting there. It may look superficially sharper at a glance, but the detail it’s faking is both uncanny (look at the poor guy’s octopus arm in the lower left) and unfilmic (look at the weird gird pattern it put over everything because it confused MPEG compression for part of the scene). These problems are universal to all machine learning “AI” tools: they are not suited to restoration or archival work. Not to mention half of this plate is (a very outdated) HD scan already, so it’s not even increasing the resolution, just doing odd things to it.
If you want better-looking images, you need a better source. It’s that simple; there’s no magic shortcut you can take. I really hope Paramount greenlights a 4K restoration of this film, because that’s the only way we will get it in the quality it deserves.

when I watched the had recreation of Star Trek l liked how put in the effect of stars of the galaxy by all means by the shuttle that leaves and in the Purist Edition I liked how you color corrected the aliens that are in space which were unknown. Overall, Good Work

It was very sad to hear of the death of the legendary Doug Trumbull but he was consulting with the DE restoration team on the upcoming 4k/Bluray. It looks like they have decided to go all out to fix the tiny imperfections in the special effects. It’s quite exciting!
I am waiting to see what it looks like before considering what any ultimate cut should look like. The Theatrical Cut bluray is incredibly sharp although Kirk looks a bit purple in some scenes.
I would definitely want to keep Grace Lee Whitney in the main credits as I have been prepping some deepfaked tweaked scenes with her in.

I think it was more that it was composited using HD footage from the only existing version - the Theatrical Cut - where possible with maybe some colour correction. The new version coming out in September has had the new DE special effects recomposited from the original so everything should be crisper. I want to do a hybrid cut re-adding in scenes from the Theatrical Cut and the SLV so that should be a fun challenge trying to upscale and colour correct the SLV so that it doesn’t look too weird in comparison.
