The ignore feature is controversial feature, and rightly so imho. it is a heavy handed response to an issue, and it probably doesn’t actually solve anything, and only further isolates different viewpoints from each other.
What would be better is a feature that gets at the root of the issue, something that helps diffuse the tension.
You know how sometimes when you go to send an email, you get a warning ‘hey, it looks like you meant to include an attachment’, or ‘hey, you didn’t include a subject line’.
I propose a similar feature here.
- you add a user to your ‘avoid arguments’ list.
- all of those users posts are sligtly more opaque when browsing (subtle, enough to still read them, but visually de-emphasised).
- when you reply to one of their posts, you get some sort of “slow down buddy, remember you added this user to your ‘avoid arguments’ list because you often get into pointless arguments… is this really worth posting? here are some links to cute cat pics instead” warning.
This is a 100 percent serious suggestion.
