STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread — Page 52

Just watched the episode. Was that a little Jurassic Park reference when they’re meeting the Bindu? Kanan says “He’s here.” and then the broken halves of the thumper are thrown between him and Ezra?

This was a good episode. I’m with both of you with regards to Maul. It’s annoying that they brought him back, but I’m glad that they’re at least doing something good with him now that he is. I can excuse a differing characterization considering he had basically no character in TPM and he also had many years of going insane on a junk planet to change from who he was in TPM to who he is now.

I’m digging the Bindu. I feel like Kanan is truly becoming a Jedi now: shedding the lies and corrupt decadence of the old Jedi Order and learning what it truly means to be a Jedi, a lot of which is thanks to Bindu’s wisdom as the middle ground between dark and light.

It was cool to see the transparent-domed astromech (which used to be R3s and are now apparently Lothal astromech droids), I always like seeing the hammerhead Old Old Republic ships (even if they’re not quite that old), and it was also cool to see a Mandalorian fighter again.

As for the big “who” at the end of the episode? I think Maul and Ezra saw two different characters on a planet with twin suns. Maul was looking for Obi-Wan, presumably, and Ezra was looking for the key to defeat the Sith.

I think we’ll see either this or this for Maul’s end (potential spoilers).

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

After watching the last (bad) episode, I was wondering: why is this show about Jedi/former Jedi, Padawan/former Padawan, Vader, Sith/former Sith, etc. and so little about the rebellion ? It’s time they get back to rebellion business, I’m so tired by this “Force” plot that is not quite coherent with what we’ve seen in the movies so far.

Something tells me he favors the Light over the Dark Side of The Force. Just the way he interacts with Kanan and the way he talks about the Sith and other Dark Siders makes it possible that he’s not actually Force Sensitive who favors balance.

Yeah I hadn’t really thought about that, but it makes sense.

I was kind of hoping that Maul would have gone to the Bindu and gotten the holocron from him without a fight to show that the Bindu was really in the middle.

He’s definitely more Yoda than Jolee (who was a Bindo, interestingly).

There’s always a plan. I have a feeling this is being used as setup for how they’ll be handling the Force and the Jedi post-ROTJ.

Also, it was very obvious who they were talking about in this latest episode.

In the trailer for season 3 we see two or three shots of a Sith like cloaked ghost fighting against Ezra and Kanan, and since all I’m waiting for in Rebels is a hint about Snoke I was prompted to think Maul talked about something evil that he sees in the Holocron, while Ezra is seeing something else.
Obviously the “Two suns” line is a BIG hint at Obi-Wan. There are all the chances in the world that Maul also saw Obi-Wan, it’s the obvious interpretation, indeed. But secretely I hope he saw something else…
As much as it is logical to have Maul and Obi-Wan confronting again, I feel like the Obi-Wan alive by the time of Rebels should be the hermit we know in Episode 4 and not a Jedi fighting old clone wars threats.

I think you are spot on with that last sentence. it would be very off-putting to me to see Obi-Wan fight maul this close to Episode 4.

I don’t think the ones in charge of the movies do care that much of the tvseries. Ok, a minor TCW character will be a minor Rogue One character, but seriously who would think that a kid-oriented tvseries is going to show the premice of the Snoke character, hence destroying one of the subplots of Ep VIII ? I highly doubt they would do that (has Ryan Johnson written a season 3 episode ?). The show needs to focus on its own plots (including loose ends of TCW, such as Maul/Obi-Wan, Anakin/Ahsoka and so on), everything else they’ve tried to do wasn’t that great so far.

Maul sees Tattooine because of Obi-Wan, Ezra because Luke is the key to defeating the Sith. So if they go to Tattooine to save Obi-Wan, they’re going to assume that Ezra just saw into Maul’s vision, not that it was the answer to his as well, and they’ll just leave.

Episode ends with Ezra-aged Luke, watching the suns set and a tiny Ghost taking off in the distance.

Oh you’ve just reminded me that Ezra is born the very same day of the very same year as Luke. And he’s way more powerful than Luke, who has only managed to “Force get” his saber and to make small stones levitate in TESB.

The show really needs to solve its continuity issues some day…

Ezra has spent the last 3 years with a trained Jedi. Luke spends like 4 hours with Obi-Wan.

I didn’t make the connection that they’re the EXACT same age. Now I get the significance of him being born on Empire Day.

Every time I see that name I want to make the Better than Ezra joke but I don’t because

Not only that but Ezra has gotten the clostest thing to formal training out of the two. Luke got less than barebones training which was sprinkled out over the course of 5 years.

Actually I made that up, I’m just assuming that would be the case.

New Rebels episode; meh. Filler episode. I wouldn’t have missed anything if I didn’t watch it. I don’t know why they insist on blueballing (Chiss joke?) us; they know we really want to see Thrawn, Vader and Maul.

This is reason #2 why I won’t be watching this season until it’s over. I’ve had my share of filler episodes from these CG cartoons; if I’m gonna spend my time watching this show, I wanna skip right to the stuff worth watching.

What! Man, I couldn’t disagree more! Frankly, I’d call this episode essential.

Plus, this episode is all about the origins of Wedge Antilles! How is that not worthwhile? He was one of my favorite OT characters growing up, and I really enjoyed his EU exploits as well, so I really enjoyed this look into how he came to fight alongside the rest of the Rebels in the OT. And not only that, we get to see Hobbie, who was a Rogue Squadron member at Hoth.

The opening was amazing. I love the way the space battles feel perfectly OT. The pilot deaths and the effects and everything were perfect. Loved seeing TIE Interceptors again, especially with the red racing stripes like the 181st had in the X-Wing comics, and I believe this is the first Rebel transport we’ve seen in the series so far? So that’s another classic Rebel ship brought to the show.

It was also cool to see someone using the card slot on an R2 unit for the first time since ANH, too. And the Imperial banter about whatever combination of letters and numbers is always funny. The Pryce/Sabine fight was great, I thought.

I always enjoy a look into the inner workings of the galaxy, so seeing things like how TIE pilots are trained was great. Most of it felt like it was right out of the X-Wing books, which I loved. TIE simulators and training scenarios and all that. Something about the design of the Skystrike Academy felt familiar to me, too… I also felt like the music was inspired by Rogue Squadron, at least a bit.

Also, I immediately figured out the Fulcrum Agent during their message.

Plus, not a single lightsaber all episode. Perfect.

As an aside, I think of all the updates to the show’s costumes, I’m most excited about the little orange triangle on Kanan’s tunic. It always screams “McQuarrie!” to me. I’m also catching a lot of the animation updates they’ve made. Movements are much smoother and realistic now. Lots of new small animations adding a lot of life to the characters as well. Also seems like the lighting and effects are improved as well. Some of the space shots looked “real.”
