Zootopia (2016) – C+/B-

This film was much more enjoyable than I had expected; I really had no interest in it at all in the first place, but someone put it on, so I watched it.

There were a lot of fun parts, humorous parts, and it generally was okay. The main problem with it is the ever present and overly blatant use of dumb jokes, puns and references that just aren’t funny, and ultimately get in the way of my enjoyment of the film. The most glaring example of this is probably Mr. Big, who is a blatant The Godfather reference. Similar to the ESB reference in Toy Story 2, only a lot worse. And a much lesser “nitpick” problem I had with him was how predictable and unfunny they made the “Mr. Big is actually super tiny” joke. I also didn’t find the bunny breeding jokes very funny. I noticed them, I may have cringed at a couple of them, but it was never funny.

The secondary problem I had with it, isn’t actually that big; it isn’t really a problem at all. I thought the main theme kind of just stuck out too much. Now, the thing that’s actually a problem, is the “bunnies can call other bunnies cute…” line, which made no sense and didn’t have anything to do with the film as a whole. It was just a one off dialogue exchange that didn’t do anything but confuse me. Is that supposed to be like the “black people can call other black people niggers” thing?

I just can’t decide on whether or not it deserves to be on the “B” spectrum or not. Definitely not worth a re-watch for me.

I absolutely agree with you here. Zootopia was very dissapointing to me for how much it was hyped up. The same praise was given to Inside Out and I freaking LOVED it but Zootopia was incredibly underwhelming. It’s theme already stuck out too much, but sometimes I found the message blatantly wrong like the “cute bunnies line”. Zootopia overall was frustrating and I would rather think of things like Big Hero 6 and Inside out to mention some of the recent animated films I adored.
