I’m going to wait until the 3D Blu-ray is release to draw conclusions, because blu-ray.com isn’t always accurate. It had March 15th as the 2D release date for a long time.

Well, according to this site: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/081116_1430
The 3D blu-ray will have a consistent AR of 2.4:1
This kills the dream.
It remains to be seen if the IMAX scenes will be included on a later edition, like the Compendium set did for ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness.’
TFA is now the third movie to be shot partially in actual 65mm IMAX to receive only a constant 2.35:1 AR transfer on blu-ray (Ghost Protocol and Batman v Superman being the other two).
IMDB was listing IMAX 65mm as one of the shooting formats for ‘The Magnificient Seven’ (2016) but now only shows 35mm. Wonder why?

IMDB is user-based and there’s always the potential for erroneous information.
65mm IMAX was also incorrectly listed as a shooting format for Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.
Or, maybe the filmmakers initially wanted to but in the case of the DC films, they saw the blunder with BVS and decided to cut down on the budget? Could be.
Here is what the Imax scene looks like in 1.78 from a recent HDTV broadcast
BD/Imax HDTV
Wow! So there is an HDTV broadcast of the IMAX scenes? Where did this come from?
she/her
mwah
Is there any way those scenes can be shared, PDB? They look awesome! It’s unlikely the studio will make them available anytime soon.
Is it possible the STARZ streaming version also has the scenes expanded?

That’s the transport stream from the Starz broadcast. I recorded it to get just the Imax sequence. It might be a future project but sadly the broadcast is highly compressed, so hopefully someone has a better source.

Please share, if possible. 😃
If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…
Confirmed that the rest of the movie is cropped to 16:9, but the IMAX sequence is expanded.

The scene of Finn on Jakku after the TIE crash was also filmed on IMAX as per the BTS stills and John Boyega’s own admission. Was that scene expanded vertically as well? It may not have been expanded on IMAX, but could be done on the Cable broadcast version. Can anyone check if the Starz or whichever version has this other scene expanded?

No, only the Jakku escape is expanded. But that’s how it was at the cinema. There were no other scenes.
Have you seen the IMAX version? Just asking to confirm that’s all. Don’t mind.

Yes, saw it 3 times in IMAX.
I’m working on overlaying the Blu-Ray onto the Starz HDTV cap to improve the overall quality. Not as easy as i first thought it as. For the standard version they not only crop the image but it also moves up and down thought a shot, so i have to manually match each shot’s movements. One thing i noticed is that the two BB-8 shots inside the Falcon during the IMAX section are zoomed and cropped from the standard version.
Here are some comparisons:

And you can see a short video of part of the re-framing that had to be done so that the Blu-Ray video lined up with the IMAX footage. I had to do this manually too 😦
Looks good. I’m surprised how good you were able to make the HDTV portions of those frames look!

The BB8 shot inside the Falcon posted by PDB, above is open matte, not cropped. Which shots are you talking about Adywan? Can you please post an image comparison for those?
By the way, your re-composites are quite good. Just the Starz image portions appear pixellated. They can be easily fixed by a de-blocking filter and then applying some 35mm film stock grain to match the fine grain look of the 2D Blu-ray.

These shots have been zoomed and cropped
And a deblock filter and grain have already been applied to the re-composite

That’s not unusual for an Imax to pan and tilt like that if they didn’t keep the information center focused.
Sounds like you have this well in hand, adywan so I’m going to stop the work I was doing. Can’t wait to see the end rsults
Adywan, could you confirm what the first shot of the Imax sequence is?
I always suspected it was the shot immediately following Rey’s “follow me.”

Yes, that’s the one.
If anyone wants the reconstructed IMAX scene, just drop me a PM

That’s because these scenes were shot with anamorphic lenses which gives a native 2.35:1 ratio. For such scenes, just include the 2D Blu-ray cinemascope counterpart. No need to use a cropped shot.
