TNT Network 20 September 6 Star Wars Movies

Starting at 8pm with Phantom Menace if anyone wants to start capping them to see if we can get some more usable footage for projects.

Had to read the thread title 26 times in order to decipher it.

I got it first time. Capping means capturing them, as in recording. Anyway, I thought this was supposed to be coming on TBS, not TNT, I saw them on the guide 2 days ago finally. I’ll record them asap. Now I don’t have to go to the living room to watch them on the blu-ray player.

Far as getting more usable footage, I’m betting they are just the blu-ray versions, so I doubt there’ll be anything worth recording, unless you wanna up the commercials to youtube or something.

I saw a promo for it yesterday and I went directly to the TNT website to confirm it before posting.

Y’know, as one of those who was lucky enough to experience the Original Trilogy in the heady days of their initial BIG SCREEN release, this topic reminds me that many future viewers of the STAR WARS ‘saga’ will only be getting their introduction to these movies through mere tv showings such as this…rather than being able to see them in the same ‘cinematic’ way that me and my mates were able to at the time. And that kinda saddens me.

Not only that, but…

1. The new ‘default’ viewing order of the movies in showings like this means that newbies are no longer seeing the ‘saga’ in it’s original ‘theatrical release’ order…which results in things kicking off with bland talk of ‘trade negotiations’ and Jar Jar’s introduction, rather than with the epic ‘Blockade Runner/Stardestroyer’ opening and ‘Rebel vs Stormtrooper’ battle’ which culminates in Vader’s entrance’…

(just as George ‘intended’ them to be, I know…but still)

2. …and even if these new viewers manage to stick with the ‘saga’ past chapters I - III in this new ‘default’ order, then they will likely only be going on to ‘experience’ the Original Trilogy’ chapters through the prism of the 2011 Blu-ray ‘special edition’ versions (and all their associated problems)…

3. …and each of these movies will be unmercifully chopped up with ads throughout these types of showings…

Hell, I’d prefer to know that these movies were only available on the likes of ‘Netflix’ in future…as at least they could be seen without the ads if nothing else!

Bah, I’m so glad I got to enjoy these movies in the full-blown, undiluted way I did, back in the day…on a HUGE screen with great (for the time) booming cinema sound…without having the Jar Jar or li’l Ani antics beforehand.

I’ll try and check out TPM when it replays at 11:02.

Presumably this will be the network debut of the “rebuilt” 2011 master and not the older version spike showed. I’m also curious if they’ll show it letterboxed at its full 2.35:1 width or if they’ll crop it to 16:9.

That bit about how Turner had to make “a separate deal with Fox” for ANH tells me there’s a very real possibility it’ll be the Lucasfilm-only version with that improvised edit of the music from the end of ESB’s end credits.

Or maybe they learned from TFA that silence can be more effective?

I’m still expecting the traditional version with the Fox fanfare if only for consistency’s sake. Digital downloads are one thing, but this is a network tv broadcast.

I do wonder though if this might end up being the hdtv debut of RMW’s 4k master of the OT. Unlikely, I know, but we’ll see.

Yeah I caught the last half hour or so of the 8pm airing and now the first hour or so of the encore.

One thing I’m noticing is a lack of any panning and scanning in certain shots that could really use it, and I’ve got the tv set for full 1:1 pixel mapping. For example, Yoda’s face gets cropped out when he says “your apprentice Skywalker shall be.” Another good example is the establishing shot of the trade federation army marching toward Theed where we can barely see the droid fighters flying overhead.

So SW on TV will suck for some years to come.

Watching one of them now. Yup, they either zoomed in the image, or stretched it vertically. I missed the intro tho, it autotuned right after the opening scroll.

It’s zoomed in, just like the vast majority of hdtv broadcasts of movies that are native 2.35:1.

Sometimes you’ll see a letterboxed presentation, like how Spike is showing Dark Knight Rises, but this tends to be the exception rather than the rule.

I noticed last night that ANH was letterboxed until the end of the opening shot. I’m guessing this was to preserve the composition as the Star Destroyer flies overhead.

I didn’t know about this ESB lucasfilm intro… I really missed the Fox fanfare opening TFA but using ESB closing coda is very weird for an opening theme. I hope Williams is going to deliver something to replace the Fox Fanfare for EpVIII and the other episodes (or 12 wagnerian movies without intro ?)… even a carbon copy would do… as rich as Disney is, they could even buy it 😃

Looks like Comcast’s people screwed up some labeling. According to the guide, Empire is on three times in a row after the prequels.
