I’m cautiously optimistic for Giacchino’s work - while I like what I know of it better than what I’ve heard of Alexander Desplat’s music, neither artist AFAIK has really worked with Wagnerian leitmotifs in the Williams mold as used in the OT.
Of course, leitmotif as a whole has been sadly out of fashion for the last 10 years or so. Aside from the Hobbit movies, which just built on the scores from LOTR, I can’t recall the last 21st century film I watched which had more than one or two musical themes in the score. A lamentable trend in my opinion.
