I tried to get into Dr. Who and was not impressed.
Which iteration of Who you start with could drastically affect your experience. The classic series is very low budget and campy, truly an acquired taste (I’m not fully “there” yet). The reboot through series 4, covering Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant under showrunner Russell T. Davies, starts to attract a broader audience, it has increasingly frequent episodes with rich stories and decent emotional arcs, but overall still pretty campy and directionless. Series 5 of the reboot shifts to showrunner Steven Moffat and actor Matt Smith (most recently Peter Capaldi), and the show now represents what may be the best sci-fi on television. Consistently well-written stories, terrific drama and overarching plots that pay out over years not episodes or seasons.
Depending where you start, it can take longer to get into it (I understand, I was there, too), but there’s really something for everyone already into sci-fi.
And I think we’d better taper off this derail unless Frink gives us reason to continue on, as we’re about as off topic as I think it gets at this point.
