Thomas & Friends - Classic Series NTSC Preservation (US dub) (a WIP) — Page 2

Let me just say as a Thomas fan, I’m really excited about this project! It’s high time the classic series got this kind of treatment! Though I also count seasons 8-11 as part of the classic era, being they still used models and sets (season 12 I don’t count because even though they were still using models and sets, they started adding CGI faces and characters). I just want to point out though, the series has gotten better since Andrew Brenner joined the crew. 😉

Just saying, if, IF you were going to include different audio options, I would’ve included all known narrations, but whatever.

Another thing to ask, you corrected/restored scenes like Sir Topham Hatt putting on his hat in Trouble in the Shed and Edward taking Henry’s coaches in Henry’s Special Coal?

Thank you! I’m glad some true Thomas fans have noticed this massive undertaking. I would love to preserve 8-12, but it’s damn near impossible to do right now. Maybe in the future? And yes, Brenner has done a number on revamping the show from a baby’s show to a children’s show.

I really, really wanted to include the Japanese dub, but I would be pulling my hair out… and that’s a lot of wasted disc space that could be used for the PQ.

I corrected the scene in HENRY’S SPECIAL COAL, but was not aware of the error in TROUBLE IN THE SHED. Will check that out! I don’t want to revise too much, I just want to fix places where the footage just doesn’t sync up or doesn’t use the correct take.

Yeah, the restored prints has alternate bits of footage here and there. The Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki has the info you need on that (just look at each episode and they tell you, less you want me to).

So, I have actively been working on this for the past months, so here is all Seven Classic Seasons in BETA form – meaning they’re bound to have errors. Before I release these on the Spleen, I would hope some fans could sit through these YouTube uploads and see what errors there are, as I can’t do it alone.

Sweet! I have questions.
So this is the audio from the Amazon release synced up to the remastered PAL DVDs with many errors corrected and custom titles?
This looks to be done at 25fps. I’m assuming the Carlin dub is sped up but then pitch corrected? It doesn’t sound pitched up. Does this mean a PAL DVD release?
This looks great! Thanks so much for your hard work.

Also, annoying stuff that I’m sure would be a pain to do:
Would you consider a version with the original Thomas the Tank Engine logo? It is how it was originally. Also, I don’t think the HiT logo needs to be there for similar reasons.

Correct, most if not all is sourced from Amazon’s audio, but with many (and I mean MANY) fixes applied and certain episodes put back into sync.

Thomas has always been filmed in 25fps (used pulldown for US releases to 60i), so nothing was adjusted. I will do the initial release in PAL.

I had thought about leaving it was THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE & FRIENDS, but I wasn’t sure. I could revert it back, but that would be a lot of extra work, because I remastered every single title card ala the restored versions.

Cool! I was talking about the speed of the US dubs. I’m assuming they were recorded after slowing down the 25fps masters. Speeding them up from 24fps/60i to 25 fps will pitch up George Carlin’s voice. (Although, now that I think about it, George Carlin probably recorded over slowed and pitched down music and sound effects, so that would go back to being correct and no one will care that George has a slightly higher pitched voice.) So this is actually the best way to release it.

No worries. I’m just fond of the original logo. This looks like an incredible amount of work, and I’m really glad you went to all this trouble.

Oh, so the NTSC masters have slowed down everything, including Carlin’s narration? That’s real convenient.

You do know that it’s possible to edit the speed of Carlin’s narration without it affecting the pitch at all right?

There’s no need. Nothing was ever slowed down or sped up – Thomas was shot/edited/recorded in sync to 25fps standard in the U.K.

When brought to the US, all they did to the footage was apply pulldown. It wasn’t until 2012 that they started converting the series to 24fps (CGI era only).

Question: for S1-2, are you using the Original, Restored, or Remastered footage cuts? (I think there were three but I may be wrong and there’s just two, I can’t remember anymore XD) Only because the footage is cropped COMPLETELY differently on a few episodes, most notably The Flying Kipper - almost very shot in the restored version is cropped nearly two inches lower on pretty much every shot compared to the original, which really ruins a few of the scenes, not least the famous crash scene… Here:

I’m going to be using the PAL restored DVD files for the main video source. I will later mux the original analog masters to the audio, so you can have both sets with the remastered US narration.

I don’t know how this compares to the sources that you’ve been using, but some of Ringo Starr’s US dubs were released on CD as part of an audiobook read-along set by Random House, sourced directly from the TV episodes themselves (not re-read like the 1985 UK Ladybird audiobooks). A few slight drawbacks with those is there’s a ‘beep’ whenever you need to turn the page and some lines of dialogue differ from the Strand VCI home video versions.

Here’s an example, “Wooly Bear” with Ringo Starr US Narration sourced from Random House read-along CD.

This is still very much a thing that’s in the works. I only just got all the US audio I needed thanks to some digital releases. I’m just having issues with the sixth series as of right now.

The project has evolved but is still happening!
