Are there flashes of the Star Wars crawl/theme in the snow? I never noticed before.

?

Whoa, really? The times when Vader’s vision is starting up, there’s the television “snow” and it looks like the Star Wars opening crawl pops in (offset slightly) and like a note of the theme plays. Am I just inventing that connection?

And I’m pretty sure the song is the guitar solo from ZZ Top’s Cheap Sunglasses? Sounds like a different version than the one I’ve heard though.

Nope.

Hint: The song title is relevant to the scene. I only discovered it by Googling the relevant word.

It’s Edgar Winters’ Frankenstein then (which makes way more sense)! They have insanely similar riffs.

Also, I have no idea why I said Pink Sunglasses. It’s Cheap Sunglasses. Jeez, my brain is going.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

You made that up, the tv snow is all from Robocop.

Nice job on the song.

Just so you know I’m not crazy. It’s definitely not the crawl, but as it flashes by it really looks like it.

And yeah I’m a bit embarrassed by missing my first guess (and not even getting the name of it right). My dad would be disappointed.

Ok guys, need a favor. There isn’t much new here, and it’s a long clip, but it’s important because it shows the inter-cutting between the death of Padme and birth of Vader. Need to know if it’s working.

There are a few minor changes, mainly I cut down some of the Robo footage, as well as adding one joke during it. There’s also a new scene at the end for your trouble.

Bonus points if you recognize the song. It was new to me.

(Side note to Frink - buy legit version of song and replace YouTube rip with it)

Recognized the song and appreciated its appropriateness.

I’d say you could still trim down the Robocop stuff and maybe one less back and forth from Vader to Padme. Otherwise, works like a charm.

Also, did they really wipe Vader’s memory?

Maybe it’s just a Rorschach test sort of thing? Unless Paul Verhoven is a closet Star Wars fan.

Back in my college tv production days, I would shoot static by aiming a video camera at a tv set, tuned to an off channel from what the VCR’s RF output was set for. I was able to get images like that. They probably did something similar for Robocop.

A Summary of My Thoughts on Yoda Swearing

First off, great joke. But the initial impression is, why no bleeps? Seems at first to be a mistake. Think about it some more, realize, “well, I guess because he’s behind glass.” Issue is it’s never established that the glass is sound proofed.

My Suggestion

Include the bleeps, but muffle them.

It would be soundproofed in a real world hospital. Pretty sure those windows where people can gawk at newborns is in any case.

In terms of cinematic language though, muffled sounds seem truer even if they’re not in real life. That it’d be muffled is what would make the joke of not hearing him work.

That was my thought as well.

I would have went with “Cheap Sunglasses” too. That’s terrifyingly close. An alternate joke could be Alice Cooper’s “Feed My Frankenstein”, which would also make it a Wayne’s World reference. shrug

I think the editing is fantastic. Love the “Angel” bits.

Right at 5:00, I don’t understand what Vader is supposed to be saying “Good. I am…”

Also, is this the same “Alter the deal” take as before?

Overall, it is coming together great.

Note: If you want to cut down Robo parts any more, you could cut out the whole wipe memory part (unless this is integral to how you play off Vader down the line), and you could snip off the “what do you think Johnson?” portion of the “He signed a release form” part (it is a bit jumbled in the transition anyway).

Oh, and I like the power of Vader’s rocking being what’s exploding stuff at the end, just want to suggest putting in some relevant (if muffled) sound effects for what we’re seeing, as it is, it is too… superficial? Disconnected? Distant? I don’t know how to put it… Detached? After a little bit it just doesn’t seem like the music is connected to what is happening, it feels like I’m not hearing something I should, based on what I’m seeing, and it distracts. Anyway, having some sound effects I think would ground it better, and maybe have him sing a little at his most extreme movements (like while “Do want” have him make a rising “ooooooooooooh” sound as he stands up straighter, then like a subtle off-key “aaaaaaah” or something sound while the camera’s pulling back [perhaps varying what sounds he is making to roughly go along with the tune, but never overpowering it]).

That singing bit (well, more him making musical noises, really), is just a way I could see things going down… take it or leave it, but some sound effects for the on-screen explosions I think would be important to incorporate regardless.

Note: Man… imagine if George Lucas had these kinds of creative interactions while he was making these movies, rather than surrounding himself with “yes men”… Things might have gone very differently…

Re: cutting down the Robo footage, what additional stuff would you guys like to see cut down. I’m not cutting the “joining the force” stuff because I think it’s funny, however I can take out the “wipe his memory” bit since it doesn’t really fit with anything going forward.

Re: the Yoda swearing behind the glass, I don’t mind the idea of muffling the beep sound…but how to do it. I’m not sure just lowering the volume will quite get there.

Yes. I tried using the second “alter” but it sounded even worse, as JEJ says “it” too close to the “alter.”

“GOOD. I am ready to jam.”

Yep.

I’m open to other ideas but this was the best I could do. I assumed I could find a place where he says “rock” but no such luck, and even trying to find an “ock” with an “r” to attach to the front didn’t work out. Trying to combine a “j” with “am” was the closest I was able to get to it.

I’ll take a look at doing some sfx (but ugh I hate doing it, so tedious).

Wook suggested using the dub of Backstroke of the West to have him say “Do want” and I think I’ll use that idea instead of the singing…which also allows me to move the subtitle to the proper place.

Frink, I have a copy of Conan I can send you. I think you’re going to need it!

Thanks, but no need, I can purchase my own copy. I already planned on it but hadn’t got around to it yet.

Nice find yoda-sama. I did a cursory scan of the Conan script but somehow missed that.

Now how to Vaderize the voice?

Is it not Vader enough just being from James Earl Jones (if anything, he’s still zeroing in on his voice at this point in your version)? I’m still listening to a few interviews of him to see if he drops any useful words (closest I’ve found is him saying “mock”, which could be modded into “rock” [I consider it because it is said with a little more pep than in Conan…]).

Unrelated to this project, I am sure, but just came across the fact that this exists… It sounds promising in many ways. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0198321/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_72

Well, it could be relevant if you ever wanted to see a Ridiculous version of Star Wars with Darth Vader saying Ebenezer Scrooge lines…

Edit: Two hundred dollars on VHS… not sure I need it that much. https://www.amazon.com/Bah-Humbug-James-Earl-Jones/dp/B000OTFK8O
