The Legend of Zelda E3 2004 Preshow Impressions

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Link is back to his old self (meaning, he's in his teens) in a brand-new trailer for the next Legend of Zelda game for the GameCube. Read our impressions.

Though last year's The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was by all accounts a resounding success, the game's unusual graphical style left many wondering if Nintendo would ever revert back to the Zelda series' signature visuals. Consider the official answer "yes." As part of Nintendo's annual E3 press conference, it showed off a new trailer of the next (currently untitled) game in the Legend of Zelda series, which featured an older, more mature Link than the one found in The Wind Waker.

Link, in this next Zelda game, incidentally looks a lot like how he does in the GameCube version of Namco's 2003 fighting game, Soul Calibur II.

The brief trailer, which is set to the same stirring operatic theme featured in the Arnold Schwarzenneger classic, Conan The Barbarian, begins with a few quick shots of different lands, times, and weather. Apparently this is Hyrule, the traditional setting of the Zelda series. Following that, there's a lot of footage of Link battling it out on horseback, a sequence interspersed with shots of a dark army rising up from on the horizon--it seems that Link will have quite a battle on his hands.

More brief snippets of on-foot combat revealed that Link will have many of his familiar moves. He can deflect opponents' projectiles with his shield and he can execute spinning and jumping slashes. And, just as in the last few Zelda offerings, a successful slash causes the screen to pause dramatically for a moment.

Link was finally shown squaring off against a towering, demonic opponent, armed with a huge morning star. (The balrog from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring immediately springs to mind here.) Between action scenes, the trailer flashed some brief slogans such as "blades will bleed," indicating the darker tone of this next installment in the series.

The graphical quality of this next Zelda is certainly impressive to behold, though naturally it isn't as stylistically distinctive as that of The Wind Waker. Still, longtime fans of the franchise will certainly be thrilled to see the series returning to its Nintendo 64 roots (as opposed to its 8-bit roots). We'll have more information on the game as soon as possible. For now, feast your eyes on the trailer.

This is so sweet!!! Wind Waker was nice but this new game looks like it is going to kick some major glass next year!!

I have posted screenshots of the game in the "Must Play Games" thread if you want to see them. They're bigger than the ones at Jedi Master's link.

Very nice, but there's only one game I'm really interested in: Half Life 2... When is it coming?! Why all those delays?!

Remember Spaceworld 2000? The first Gamecube demonstrations were made there. The 2 videos shown were:
1. A reconstruction of the Assault on the Death Star from EP4, to promote the Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader game that was an initial release.
2. A 30 second duel between Ganondorf and Link.

I could have wet myself when I first watched those 2 videos. A lot of people were disappointed when Wind Waker was turned into a cel-shaded game. It was too different.

I think everyone just got happy again.

I think the kids will be getting a GameCube for Christmas.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Nah... There are only 2 games I really enjoy playing, and I'm waiting for their sequels... the Metal Gear Solid games, and Half Life.

I will always be partial to The Legend of Zelda for the SNES. The game had a great play-mechanic, and is still fun to this day.

CLASSICS ARE ALWAYS GREAT

I didn't like the original Zelda so much because of it's battle system. I prefer Square games, such as Final Fantasy VI and X.

Final Fantasy.
I recently disted off my NES emulator and started playing Final Fantasy 2 recently. Had a very innovative level-up system (if your health or magic dropped below 1/2 during combat, your HP and MP would usually increase). You could even attack your own characters to get more damage done.

By original Zelda, I meant the SNES version sorry. I've played Ocarina of Time and it's ok, but I'd rather play the FF RPG-game system. And yes I know FF VI and FF X are two different games, as are all FF games, but those are just two of my favorite games...

The N64 in general was a classic system. There were so many great games for it. The Zelda games just happened to be among the best. If you haven't played the N64, do so. It costs like $30 and the games are heck cheap. If you haven't played the Zelda games especially, you are missing out...

Of course, they were available for the GameCube as a special sampler disc, which omitted the SNES version. Buggers.

That's when I bought my Cube.

The dropped the price to $99, and offered that special package. I was so happy to have legitimate copies of Zelda 1 and 2.

I agree about the Link to the Past. I was hopig that would be on the disk. I'd rather have had that then those special videos.

I am pretty sure it is the same.

The GBA version also had the first 4 Swords game with it, right?

The Collectors Zelda that came with the $99 dollar gamecube didn't have A Link to the Past because Nintendo didn't want it to cut into the sales of the GBA version. They aren't as stupid as they look.

Isn't Zelda one of those games where you can link your GBA to your Cube and use it for supplemental map information and the like?

Really? I still don't want a GBA; when it's the same price as a GameCube and only $50 less than a PS2, you know what I'm going to go with.
