Those of us in the DBZ fan community were trying to figure that one out for years. During Season two, for some reason unbeknownst to all the rest of man kind, they cast a woman with a grandmotherly voice named Paula Chambers as Frieza. Maybe it had something to do with the shortness or the purple and lavender patches on his skin, I have no idea...

In Season 3, the voice cast was changed when Saban lost control of the franchise; Funimation could no longer use the "Ocean Group" actors, which were generally better but not good... So they hired a bunch of D-List voice actors. Rather than bucking the trend of terrible voices, they had the new actors and actresses imitate the season 2 group (!!HOW STUPID!!) and the result is the audio travesty that is Funimation's season 3.

2) What do you mean? What did I say there? The voices in the Dub of Nausicaa don't suck like they do in most dubs. Have you seen the dub of Zatch Bell on Cartoon Network? Zatch Bell, I swear, is played by the same woman who plays Jimmy Neutron!

4)Granted, but text can't convey the same emotion. As Uma Thurman said in the Behind the Mic feature, Japanese speach has different vocal emotional paterns than English, so sometimes scenes feel off because of that difference.

Still, I like to listen in Japanese. I'm not attacking the original version, just defending the dubbing. What I'd like to know is why all anime even have to be dubbed? Most anime dub companies can't even find decent voices, so why not just show them in the original voices with subtitles? Wouldn't that be cheaper?

Whoa, Uma Thurman is in it too? Along with Hamill and Stewart? I'm definitely buying this one.

2- I thought you meant "the voices don't suck" to the japanese voice actors. I didn't notice you were refering specifically to the Nausicaa dub on that one.

4- Well it's merely a translation of what's being said. The emotion is on the actor's voice.

They usually dub because of market reasons, they usually target-audience animation to children, and they know for a fact that children do not (or sometimes cannot) read subtitles.

Yeah, but I'm talking about the somewhat more serious stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho or Full Metal Alchemist, or of course Evangelion. I don't want crap like Yugioh in America at all, dubbed or subbed

Actually, I only asked the question to make my point. Some people can't read subs, and somepeople don't like to. I have to wear my glasses when I watch a subtitled movie because my eyes are so bad. (Or set really close to the TV, making them even worse)

Disney is selling Nausicaa as a family movie, and you know the modern western family isn't going to set down and watch it in Japanese. It was probably that you ridiculed the idea of watching the movie dubbed that surprised me more than anything else.

It's just that I consider you to be a true anime fan, above the average audience, who dosen't even know what an anime is. So I supposed you would want to watch it in japanese...

Actually, I'm not really all that into anime. I've just heard that Nausciaa is really good, and since it was in the scifi-fantasy genre, I thought I'd probabl like it. Like I said before, I really don't get into Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion, though Full Metal Alchemist is looking like it is going to be good.

Unfortunately, Cartoon Networks schedule for FMA is unclear to me right now, so I only catch it about ever five episodes.

That said, I normally watch it in English unless the English track really sucks.

Sweet, I'm above the average audience!

BTW I just got Ghost in the Shell on DVD today, I haven't seen it in years, I'm going to have to watch it tomorrow.

I do own Ghost in the Shell, but unfortunally it does not feature the original soundtrack (talk about irony, eh?), so I'm looking for a better copy. I also would like to have the Akira 2-disc box, but it was not released here, so I think I might have to import the american region 1 edition...

I never saw Ghost in the Shell 2, but I heard it's good...

Another DVD I'm looking for, but I haven't found yet: Naruto, the first movie.

There was one, released in october, maybe november last year. The teaser trailer shown at the end of the episodes back then gave me a "Saint Seiya movies" déjà vu feeling, which is NOT a good sign, but what the heck, I'll give it a try.

I'm still wating for the show to air here, hoping that it isn't butchered like DBZ, Digimon, One Piece, ect ect were.

They butchered One Piece over there? Well, then yes, they'll cut some things from Naruto.

Wait a minute...

Not all companies butcher their anime... One Piece was dubbed by 4Kids, I believe, and they censored things. I don't know about the show, but there was something about a character who had died in an accident... and they changed it to her being impared for life and will never be seen again..... Or somethng like that. I don't know enough about the series to go into any more detail. I don't even know what it is about...

But other companies aren't so bad. Dragonball Z and GT are the only things Funimation has butchered, and that was mostly replacing the music with generic rock and rap and giving minor characters good voices when major ones get stupid voices...
Everything else is they've dubbed has been pretty decent. And they don't hold back on death and killing like most American cartoons and 4Kids do. (Ironically, I think Pokemon is probably the most maturely done dub from 4Kids)

What was the Canadian company that dubbed Zoids?

If it was canadian, probably Pioneer and/or Ocean Group.

Ocean Group is the cast that dubbed the first 2 seasons of Dragon Ball Z, back when people couldn't die and Goku got blasted "Into another Dimension."

I avoid watching anime being distributed thru the USA. Nothing against america! It's just the way they treat anime...

One Piece was censured two times. On the manga, Sanji's cook chief (from when he worked at the restaurant-ship) had to EAT his leg so he wouldn't starve when he got into an isolated island. On the anime, he used his leg to fish (?).. okay... But on the american version, I've read this is missing. I don't know much about any other cuts.

Yamato was release in Brazil twice back in the late 70s early 80s, once thru an american distributor, another time directly from Japan. Fans were shocked to see how much was cut in the american release - they changed names, changed the plot by altering dialogues, and even cut scenes that featured a bathroom or a toilet seat! Go figure that...

I don't even have to mention the horrendous "warriors of the wind" version of nausicaa. After that, Miyazaki refused to let anyone re-cut his anime without his previous authorization.

Furi Kuri: major cuts and censoring. Bare naked butts and slight sugestions of genitalia or phalic symbols trimed out or cut. Dialogue changed.

Should I go on...?

Well... I would prefer those things cut out of One Piece....

Anyway, exactly what did they do to Nausicaa to make it Warriros of the Wind?
