I thought "good books" would sound sort of lame, so I put it in latin.

I thought that since I already had an Essential Movie thread going, why not make a literature based one.

Its pretty much self-explanatory, name off some of your favorite novels, coffee table books, etc...

On and off for the past two or three years I've been up to my neck in Napoleonic War Historical Fiction from Authors such as CS Forester(Hornblower series), Patrick O'Brian(Jack Aubrey series), and most recently in the Sharpe Series by Bernard Cornwell(whose stories were also made into a TV series starring Sean Bean).

At this very moment I'm trying to finish up Lord Hornblower, the tenth novel in the Hornblower series.

What have you guys been reading?

BTW, some of the Hornblower novels were made into movies by A&E(Starring Ioan Gruffudd with appearances by Robert Lindsay, and none other than Wedge Antilles himself, Denis Lawson), a great watch if you get the chance.

And, obviously, Master and Commander is based on Patrick O'Brian's work.

But don't let me take up too much space...

I read approximately 25 Novels last year, and wrote a short one, so I'm pretty thoroughly burnt out on literature right now.

I read probably just as many, how can you get tired of reading?

I do it all the time online.

Plus burnt out is only part; the other part is that school constantly interfiers. Plus I finished reading the NJO, which was the main reason I read so much to begin with. I'll probably get back into it this summer, though. I still have to finish I, Jedi and Shatterpoint, which have been collecting dust for months.

Can you think of any non starwars books to reccomend?

My first post in this thread give some, but here are some specific titles:

Beat to Quarters
Ship of the Line
Flying Colours

The main hornblower trilogy by CS Forester are some really good reads

Also try On Her Majesty's Secret Service by Ian Fleming, the best spy novel, period.

That's the one where Bond gets married and his wife dies, correct?

Indeed it is.

I might check into it later, but as of now, I'm pretty much broke.

Try the Library, I'm sure they'll have all of them.

Confidentially, my public library sucks. Plus I don't yet have a method of transportation.

Compared to where I used to live, the one here is like a cubby hole and they still have them.

You might even try your school library, they're sure to have the Hornblower series at least.

Alright. But if it doesn't I'm going to hold you responsible for my having to partake in the terrible smell of my school library.

Anyway, some books I reccomend:

Star By Star, Troy Denning
Traitor, Matt Stover
Anything by Timothy Zahn
The Left Behind Series, Jerry Jenkins
The Crucible, Arthur Miller (who strangely died right as I started to read the Crucible)
The Way Things Ought To Be, Rush Limbaugh, (even if you disagree with him politically it's a good read for some laughs)
Pretty much anything by RA Salvatore.

I know it's a cliche, but one of my favourite books is The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.
Also, although not techniacally a book, I love William shakespeare's Macbeth.
And Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card was a pretty good read, and I heard they're gonna make a movie of it.

War does not make one great.

Some good books I've read are from local authors, and, unfortunally, are absolutely untranslatable and unavailable outside my country.

I think every human being should read Kafka once at their lifes.

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. I said untranslatable.

They are unstranslatable because they use words with meanings only understood here, very obscure cultural references you'd need to be living here for years until you would be able to understand, some word play that would only work if read in portuguese (like in english, bee and the letter B, eye and the letter I, stuff like that)...

I'm reading Frankenstein, Book 1 - Prodigal Son by Dean Koontz and Kevin J. Anderson as well as Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert J. Pirsig. Both really good so far.

I'm reading Matthew Stover's Shatterpoint right now, but I'm really deep into The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It's really unclassifiable in terms of genre, so I won't even try to explain it, but if you're into dark fantasy and/or epic quests, I recommend it. I'm not a King fan, and I'm still surprised that I'm so addicted to the series.

King has a new mini-novel coming out soon. It's a throwback to the hard-boiled detective novels of yore. I guess it's a whole series of books each written by a different well-known author. Kinda cool, IMHO. Very much like the old pulp crime novels.

King loves his work too much to retire. But I think he's reached the stage of his life where he realizes he can just toy around the rest of his life, especially now that the Dark Tower is finished, because he'll no longer have fans holding it over his head that he hasn't finished the story. The crime novel is one of his "just-for-fun" enterprises, I take it, and I'd actually like to try it.
