Sequels that should never be... — Page 22

Truthfully, I can stand either version of Jennifer. Surely someone could have played her better. But I agree the BTTF 1 Jennifer was better. I can't remember which one was Shue and which one was Wells at the moment.

As for Biff, I can't say where Bossk is coming from, considering he is pretty much the main character of the film. Especially when he controlled the town in Alternate 1985--he was just plain evil.

And Bossk, If I may ask, Why didn't you like the hover board chase?

I just liked the original skateboard chase better and it seemed like they just ran out of ideas so they rehashed it with hoverboards and it was just less effective in my mind. Far less effective.

Wells was Jennifer in 1 and Shue was Jennifer in 2 & 3. However, bear in mind that Shue was supposed to be Jennifer throughout the series. However, just before filming was to begin on 1, a family member had been either badly injured or killed in an accident and she was replaced by Wells. Also, IMDb says that when filming for BTTF 2 began, it was discovered that Wells had disappeared from the acting scene back in 1987 for "undisclosed reasons" whatever that means.

I allways loved the hoverboard chase scene because it was hoverboards.

What did you think of the Hoverboard chase at the end when Marty was trying to get the Pants Almanac from '55 Biff?

That was a great scene. I love the second film because it adds a brilliant complexity to the plot, having McFly interact with himself from the previous film, the whole utopic "future" thing, the alternate 1985, and the almanac chase... I mean, how mainstream many films use alternate universes as a plot device? To me, comparing the BTTF 2 to BTTF 1 is like comparing Empire Strikes Back to Star Wars. And yes, part 3 feels like "ROTJ"...

That hoverboard scene was cool just because it was different. It hadn't already been done (that I recall, at least). I don't have anything against the hoverboards, just the replication of that scene in the second film. I'd rather have had something completely different. I also didn't like the grandson of Biff (can't remember his name) and his little gang of cronies. They annoyed me. Sorry.

Griff got kind of annoying, but I thought his gang was cool. That one guy with the instant acess MP4 player on his belt and stuff, and the really strong girl who lifted Marty Jr. by his "scrote"....

OUCH.

Well, to each their own. I just think that BTTF part 2 and 3 pale in comparison to the 1st one. The 1st one is a classic.

My wife and I agree with you, Warbler. And that's the reason we haven't purchased the box set. We only want 1. Not that we hate 2 and 3. Actually, I thought 3 was okay. 2 I could do without. But the original is all you need.

Last I saw, Bossk, the whole set was down to $20.

I loved the hoverboard chase. I think the thing that kept it from being a re-hash of the skateboard chase (at least in my opinion) is that the movie was making fun of the fact that it was basically the same thing, with Biff watching and saying, "There's something very familiar about all this." The last two movies were all about how crazy you could take the premise of the trilogy and still keep it under control, and somehow it worked, unlike a lot of movies today. In my view, the whole trilogy is classic, even though I will admit that the first one is the best of the bunch, though I do have a soft spot for part two, so you're not the only one Ric.

So I guess I'm not the only crazy one here after all...

We're all a little crazy.

I mean, we have at one time or another actually expected Lucas to release the OV on DVD.

Yeah, I know. We picked it up for my brother in law for his birthday, but it turns out a friend of his got it for him as well. We can't find the receipt so we may be stuck with it. And we only just realized it is the full screen version (only in tiny letters on a sticker on the front of the box; nowhere else on the set, even on the back specs sheet, does it tell the aspect ratio).

That's irresponsible packaging, right there. It's strange, since my set has the 1:85:1 aspect ratio listed in the specs. Yet another reason why the movie industry needs to quit producing fullscreen format. *restraining myself from raging on about pan and scan for an indefinite amount of time*

I just pray that some customer service department in some store will feel pity and let me swap.

Why should the industry quit producing Full Screen?

Is that not sort of like Lucas not releasing both versions?

Not really considering that the widescreen is what was released in theaters anyway. The full screen never really makes it anywhere, not even on TV. TV networks pan&scan it to their own tastes usually. Hence why watching some movies on TV feels so jerky. So, technically, full screen versions never really existed in the first place. Unless a filmmaker (Kubrick was notorious for it) actually filmed the movie in full screen to begin with.

I've never noticed...

I just meant that since some customers prefer the Full Screen version, and since some consumers prefer the OV to the SE, there was sort of a parallel.

Sometimes video distributors use the pan&scan / widescreen thing to blackmail and torture consumers. Films like Kill Bill vol 1 and Matrix Reloaded are only available at widescreen for those who buy the DVD. The rental version are full screen. Well at least over here.

My mother-in-law bought me the last Samurai on DVD but she got me the full screen version and now I can't swap it for fear of offending her and my wife.... D'OH.

Why can't you just swap it? Nobody would know the difference, would they? It's just a little band on the top that says widescreen or full screen. If she didn't know enough to pick one versus the other, the odds are pretty slim that she would notice if you swapped it for a different one.

Unless she is DEVOTED to the wonders of pan&scan and refuses to watch anything in widescreen, but I doubt it.

Only my dad is like that. But I think I broke him of it using the special edition of Starship Troopers.

What is the difference between pan and scan and full screen?

4

Author
Time
Pan&Scan is a techinique for adapting a 16:9 or 2.35:1 film into a 4:3 ratio (a fullscreen TV). It crops the image in the middle, sometimes moving the selected part of the screen to the left or to the right. Sometimes this create a noticeable jerky camera movement to the right or to the left, when a character moves from one part of the screen to another, for example. So far the best example on how horrible pan&scan really is is the fullscreen version of "close encounters", the pan&scan movement happens on almost every scene, and it's so annoying the movie gets almost unwatchable.

...

Hm... You know in the SE VHS release of A New Hope, when Luke says "There's one [sandperson] I can see him now..." Looking through his binoculars..

In the full screne version, you can't even see the Tusken--he is off screen. That scene always confused the Hoth out of me until I got the DVDs in widescreen.
