Thanks for the reply. Those were some of the more difficult scenes to edit and ensure fluidity. I had hoped to composite his mask over his face originally, but I found that my compositing abilities weren’t up to snuff. I was able to pull off two composite shots, but only because they were viewed from a distance for a short period of time. I’m hoping some Adywan-esque individual might lend a hand with those scenes.

As for the sudden shift in demeanor for the officer, I wonder if I added an angry “What?!” from Kylo Ren before the shift if that would help sell the sudden change and fear?

Thanks again! 😃

Which software did you use to rip the blu-ray to AVI and WAV files? I’d love to know!

That_OT_Ruler, I’ll have to look at my programs. It’s been months since I ripped the files. I followed a guide over at fanedit.org with slight modifications. I’ll look over there and review my programs and get back to you.

I posted this over at fanedit.org and thought I’d share it here also.

Thank you to everyone who has given feedback so far. Your willingness to take the time to view and give thoughtful feedback is humbling. Thank you for all of your praise, concerns, suggestions, and support!

A common concern is the darkness of the video. I seem to remember reading that @ThrowgnCpr mentioned the difference in preview screens and dark renders is related to an RGB issue in Sony Vegas? I’ll do some sleuthing on the forum and the web to see if I can get the file to not render so dark. The final iteration of this edit will address this concern.

I’m currently adjusting:
minor crawl speed and fading
audio edits during the interrogation scene (possibly augmenting Kylo Ren’s voice more)
audio edits during the first tantrum removal to have Kylo Ren say “What!?” angrily to better explain the commander’s sudden shift from confidence to fear (originally due to the tantrum)
video editing during the sinking sands to create a more fluid transition
video editing during the interrogation scene to mirror lighting and hue of rest of scene
adding many more names to the special thanks section 😉

If you have the ability, or know someone who does, to composite/rotoscope Kylo’s mask on his head realistically during the interrogation scene I’d love to work with you/them. The scene would be that much more powerful if I could preserve the two on screen together.

Kexikus and I have been talking about Finn’s character development and we both agree we’ve had an issue with how quickly Finn goes from being a stormtrooper to killing stormtroopers and officers when they escape in the tie fighter. Kexikus asked if I would mock up this idea. Here it is:

https://vimeo.com/178974400

This will most likely be in the final version.

I like it, I thought it was fine before, but I can see why you chose to do it this way.

I reeally enjoyed this edit. Some brief feedback: First thought is the edit is a bit too dark - I can barely see anything in some parts. It just needs to be lightened up a bit. I like a lot of the cuts, especially the masked interrogation. The few seconds of the superimposed helmet can be tweaked a bit to make it look more real (lighting on the helmet, etc.) but overall really well executed. I’d love to see ‘Kylo searching the Falcon’ added to this edit too… I think it would add to the Kylo/Han connection. Lastly, the scene where the ground opens up between Kylo and Rey… Rey looks too small in this scene. Kylo looks twice her size as-is… if Rey can be enlarged a bit, I think it’ll look much more believable they are right next to eachother.

Thanks for taking the time to view and critique my edit preview ForceGhostRecon! I really appreciate it! 😃

As indicated above, I’m working on the odd darkness issue that is occurring.

Thanks for pointing out the helmet composite. I agree with you that it is a bit too dark and needs some lighting/hue adjustments. I’ll be applying some hues to make that helmet look a bit more realistic for the scene.

I’d hesitate to add the falcon scene as I’m not sure how he’d get around so much in such little time. I suppose it could be placed after he first senses Han Solo when they begin looking for Rey? He could then head to the Falcon and that would lead to the intro of the xwings? I’ll look into this.

The ravine scene with Kylo and Rey is simply the same scene layered on top of itself with the middle scooped out. I’ll look at my cropping settings to make sure they are more comparable in order to ensure a more accurate height ratio. It may also just be that they are spread out on different planes, X vs Y, resulting in the appearance that he is a giant 😃 probably not though.

I really appreciate the time given to watch and review this edit! I’ll look over tha edit with your suggestions in mind.

I just ripped some deleted scenes to mess with and figured out what I did to get my lossless avi.

First, I used MovieRescuer found here: http://www.videohelp.com/software/MovieRescuer to make a copy of the movie on my hard drive.

Second, I made an avisynth script to load the m2ts file into virtualdub 1.9.11 (other versions don’t work for me) and saved as AVI. This produces the lossless avi file.

Third, I used tranzcode to produce the wav files. I also have used audacity with the ffmpeg plugin to create pcm wav files.

Be prepared to have a 150gb of free space available for the lossless AVI file. Each audio channel is around 1.5gb. TFA is around 160gb in total with a lossless avi and pcm wav files. Hope that helps.

I just reviewed the scene and you were right. David and Goliath difference. I matched the cropping settings and now they are the correct heights. Thanks for catching that. 😃

Yeah, I think adding Kylo Searches the Falcon would ultimately strengthen Han and Ben’s relationship, making it more surprising and emotional when he dies. It would also add a little backstory for Kylo, hinting that he had seen his father’s ship before. The film doesn’t need it, but I think it adds a little too have it. I personally think Finn and the Villager and Finn will be fine would also work well in the film. I think Finn and the villager would possibly add more motivation for Finn to leave the First Order, although I can see how some would see it as just repeating a point. Once again it’s just my preference, but I think Finn will be Fine would strengthen’s Finn and Rey’s relationship by showing the first thing Rey dos at the base, is check to see if Finn is alright. Now that it has been confirmed that we will be getting more deleted scenes on the 3D Blu Ray in November, some of those scenes, as well, may improve the film if they were added back in. Anyway, just thought I would give my thoughts. Thanks again, as always.

I’ve since flip flopped on inserting deleted scenes, the Falcon one specifically. I actually like how it distances Kylo from Han. Each time he calls him “Han Solo” It implies a closeness, but also a third party familiarity which serves the purpose of this particular edit. Here’s the draft of the deleted scene reinstated.

Excellent, I love it!

The only thing I might suggest, would be asking to use the clip from the end of this thread:

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/OPEN-VOTE-FOR-PRIORITY-OF-TIME-CODE-REMOVAL-FROM-DEL-SCENES-FROM-TFA/id/49509

I just felt the cropping was a bit out of place in the shots of Kylo’s back.

Thanks again OT Fan 😃

As far as I have seen, that project has come to a halt. While the attempt is/was phenomenal, there were some technicalities in it that would need to be fixed first if it were to be used. With teaching and school starting up, I won’t have the time or energy to attempt painting out the timestamp myself either.

As for the cropped version, the only scene that bothers me is the one where he first approaches the cockpit and removes his hood. That one is a bit too zoomed, but I can’t pull it back due to the timestamp.

His placement in the frames could actually imply a forward movement to the right, which coincides with the movement of the x-wings entering starkiller base orbit prior and approaching the oscillator after the scene.

I may be able to paint out the time stamp on scenes that have fairly simple backgrounds, but most likely will have this version.

I actually really like this scene… i think it’s symbolic how it’s the only time we see light shining directly on Kylo’s face in a close-up. I find it almost representative of the “pull of the light” …as he fights to suppress the feelings and memories that accompany walking into his father’s cockpit. Pretty powerful stuff in my opinion…

Thanks ForceGhostRecon. That’s actually the one I was referring to. It’s close, but I’d need to work on the image as it warbles quite a bit.

I agree with you that the scene is great at bringing a new dynamic to his character. Interestingly, JJ says in the bonus feature the that Han and Leia were off doing their Republic duties and Ben was often alone implying that Han wasn’t around much when he was young. The script even points out they Han was astonished when Kylo took off his mask and he saw his sons face for the first time as a man. I’d like to think that they shared time together in his youth as it makes this scene a hopeful one, as you point out.

Lots of updates have occurred since I posted here last. New Title (Heir to the Force), new crawl, new cuts, and most importantly, new preview file. I’m looking to release this week and I’m hoping to receive final critiques before submission over at fanedit.org. 4gb 720p and 10gb 1080p stereo versions will be available to stream or DL upon request. PM me if you’d like to view the edit. Thanks

I’ve received some good feedback from previewers and will be implementing some additional fixes based on the feedback.

Also, I’m really wanting to implement my idea for a Kylo Ren Force vision, but I’m not able to get it just right. The idea is to mirror the look of Anakin’s vision from Ep III. This Force vision will help to better establish Kylo Ren’s struggle with the force. We hear Snoke’s lines as well as echoed lines from Luke where he is trying to persuade Vader to come back to the light.

Version 1: https://vimeo.com/187521772

Some users asked that I put a shadow over his face so version 2 has that along with different imagery and some light ray effects and a slight yellowing grade.

Version 2: https://vimeo.com/191249934

Would love some feedback on them and also some assistance if anyone is able and willing. Thanks!

Interesting ideas Dig.

To be honest, I’m intending to get RID of Anakin’s ‘Force vision’ of ‘screaming Padme’ in Ep III for my own ideal version…so that’s where I’m at with that.

However, I’ve gotten a chance to PM you some thoughts on your ‘Kylo interrogates Rey’ scene over on Fanedit(.)org now.

In trying to release my edit, I’ve had many kind reviewers that have asked “why not…” questions and I just can’t ignore them. They aren’t huge requests, but they are valid and in order to present the best product, I feel that I should try a little harder to obtain or create these requests.

Is there anyone who has or knows someone who has a really good Kylo Ren cosplay outfit that could green screen some shots for me to use in the interrogation scene. I basically need shots to rotoscope over the top of Adam Driver, or his face at least. If you have the goods or know someone who could help. Please post or PM me. Thanks!

Update

Yesterday my computer died. The drive is fine, looks like a board surge. Shopping around to see if I can replace it or just upgrade (don’t really have funds for that right now). I’ve got about 24 weeks left in my Masters, so I may just wait until it’s done. I’ll update as soon as progress begins again. Thanks for you support and patience.

Haven’t posted in here in some time. New computer, new term, new amounts of no time to edit 😃

I did manage to throw this together though. I’ve never thought it a good choice to have Poe just show up during the Resistance X-Wing scene on Takodana, so I took him out. I utilized an unused scene from the trailers, rearranged other scenes that were removed when Poe flies around blasting Ties and added a bunch of sound fx to blend it together.

Here’s the video of the cut: https://vimeo.com/200529290
