The Killing Joke: Film Edition (Released)

So after reading numerous articles on the mixed reception of The Killing Joke and having the chance of watching it last night, I thought it might be best for a fan edit treatment of The KIlling Joke.

My thought is that the first 20 minutes need to be for the most part removed, but keep some of it in. This is only to keep the filmmaker’s original intent of humanizing Batgirl before all the major story stuff happens.

I was also thinking of keeping the opening shot, but cutting it before Batgirl comes into the frame and transition it to the sidewalk with rain dripping down.

I’m still thinking of other possible edits for the film and would appreciate any feedback on the project.

So, I have remixed the order of events so that everything doesn’t feel as separate. I also managed to make it seem like Barbara is getting too invested in the case which is why Batman dismisses her. I am currently rendering a first draft to see if it works or not. If it looks pretty damn good, I’ll send it to the spleen, if not, well, I’ll keep fine tuning it…

Super close to being done, need to add one more sound effect, render it, and if it seems great, it will be up on myspleen today!

Ok, If there is anyone out there who knows how to upload a torrent on myspleen successfully, I need some help…

Hey there, I’ve been interested in taking on a project like this myself and Id like to see what you’ve got so far. I’ve never uploaded to MySpleen before, but if you make I private vimeo link I’d be happy to check it out. I despise what they’ve done to the source material but I think certain components being present could salvage the movie for me.

how about keeping the prologue but get rid of the parts of it that ruin the killing joke like how it makes Barbara look etc.

The part you mentioned about Barbara has already been edited, but I am not going to keep her prologue. The only purpose it serves is to say “Hey this ain’t The Killing Joke!!!”

Sounds interesting. I watched the theatrical version the other night and thought the intro was totally out of sorts with the source material, especially the “relationship” bit. It just felt like lazy story telling to me, a way to fill space. I wish that Azarello had used some mystery or detective angles to flesh out the story or perhaps some insight into Bats relationship with Joker up until that point. I’d like to check out the edit when it becomes available. Thanks…rickster

Something that absoloutely needs to be put back into the film is the reflection of the police car headlights in the puddle, at the very end:

I can forgive most of the changes, but the fact that this is removed truly baffles me. I just don’t understand why you’d even bother adapting the comic if you can’t realize how immensely important this was to the conclusion of the story. They even have Batman tell Gordon the police are on their way in the movie, only for them to never show up…

Well, with the editing software I use, the best I could do was put in a siren sound effect. Perhaps someone who knows more on rotoscoping or recoloring would be better to ask. For now, the sound will do. I finally figured out how to get the film to upload to vimeo.

As a huge fan of the source material, I enjoyed your Revisit cut; thanks for the hard work. If I may add one observation, I felt the cut between Batman’s “abyss” line and the next scene was a bit abrupt, as opposed to the other cuts you made in the film which were much more seamless. Maybe a fade in/out with the video and soundtrack would make the transition less abrupt, but overall, I enjoyed your cut immensely, quite a bit more than the original. Great work.

Thank you so much of your words of support. I am very happy that you enjoyed it. I plan on uploading the full quality version once I figure out how to transition the abyss scene. I figured it might come up, because it was one of the harder scenes to change, that and the premiere was being strange with fades for video…
