How prominent is sulu being gay in terms of being shown?
I don’t care for me it doesn’t bother me at all but I’m going to see it with my grandpa. He’s been a diehard trekkie since TOS but he thinks homosexuality is wrong. He a never hateful or rude about it and would never put someone down for being gay, I just wonder how much behind-the-scenes bitching I’ll have to endure.
It’s a barely noticeable, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it background detail.

All that happens is that Sulu puts his arm around a man and they walk off into the background with their daughter, so without prior knowledge of official statements, it could easily be Sulu walking away with his brother or another relative. I read somewhere that there was supposed to be a scene where they kiss, but it was cut.

END MILD SPOILER
Yep, it’s literally one shot in the entire movie. It obviously has an agenda but for those who were against it, it wasn’t very in-your-face and it doesn’t feel like it was even written that way originally.
