Jaws: The Revenge | Theatrical Cut Reconstruction - HD (Released)

For those who know me, you’re probably aware of my OFF THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR fan edit of JAWS THE REVENGE, which aimed to reinstate the deleted scenes (in their correct order) present in the AMC cut of JAWS THE REVENGE. This is now finished, and ready for upload. But before I put it on the 'Spleen, I decided to try something else.

On June 14th, 2016, the Blu-ray for JAWS THE REVENGE was released in the United States. The release used the usual “exploding shark” revised ending, but featured the original theatrical ending (although missing a sequence) as a bonus feature, and in 1080p HD!

For those who don’t know the difference between the cuts of the film, check this handy guide out – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iSZ0PTriHA

The problem is, the Blu-ray special feature is missing the theatrical version of “Jake’s demise” which features 3 alternate shots. I am in possession of said frames, but they come from a 720p Deutsch HDTV rip of the theatrical cut (which is incredibly rare to find in HD and OAR) with a channel logo burnt onto the video.

Here are the frames in question - http://imgur.com/a/y9V4s

I have, however, been able to reconstruct the integral pieces (i.e. shark’s demise, pre-dubbed plane sequence, etc), which you can see here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN44G2TNR18

Other than the missing sequence, the project is virtually complete and in full 1080p. Does anyone perhaps have access to a rip that contains these frames? Now, I could just forget these frames and call it a day - but in the end, it’s not a TRUE theatrical reconstruction without those three shots!

I would LOVE to see this. Might I recommend releasing without the missing frames, but including the scene in question as a separate mp4 (from your 720p source) for the sake of completion? Just as a way to acknowledge the almost-complete nature of the edit.

The Bluray is Dnr’ed and from an old master. The German hdtv is supposedly the best one out there as it is from a newer master not shown anywhere else in tge world

The German HDTV is from the same source, just with the alternate footage – all the same scan, etc.

Not according to reports over at the forum with Blu in the title, the German hdtv is supposedly from a newer scan where as the Bluray is taken from the same source as the itunes.

If you look at the video link above (the one comparing the two cuts of REVENGE), I compare the German HDTV and the US iTunes version (which is now the Blu-ray version) and they’re identical. Same scan, same detail, etc. It’s NOT the same scan as the past two DVD releases, though. So either it’s brand new, or something they’ve had since the late 90s.

The Blu-ray forum is also the place where everyone thought the JAWS 2 master was a new scan. Little did they know, and refused to believe, that it was the same master as the 2003 DVD release. Boy were they stumped.

I’m really excited about your Off the Cutting Room Floor fanedit. I grew up with the TV Cut of Jaws the Revenge and the movie feels empty without the beginning narration and those extra character scenes.

And of course, the TV Cut has that establishing shot that Roger Ebert felt was needed to help the US theatrical ending make more sense : “That the director, Joseph Sargent, would film this final climactic scene so incompetently that there is not even an establishing shot, so we have to figure out what happened on the basis of empirical evidence.”

https://youtu.be/csrlOOZnKDw?t=31s

I can’t help but think if Ebert had seen this, he would have shaken his head in disbelief and agreed with the decision to cut it. Still - it’s so a part of the movie for me. I need to see that grotesque shark doing a slow-motion spin before impalement.

So – I can render this thing out very soon, just need to finish the colour correction. Considering the Blu-ray was DNR’ed, would preserving the theatrical cut in 720p be acceptable? I could do 1080p, but that would make the missing frames stick out, as their resolution is only slightly about 720p.

I believe Harmy showed that DNR’ed Blus sometimes don’t have a big difference between 1080 and 720.

Thoughts – 720p vs 1080p?

So you’re re-encoding the majority of the movie? What’s the basis for this “color correction?”

I don’t think the resolution of the missing frames is a major issue, considering how short those shots are.

Yes – the whole film is being re-encoded. It’s not as simple as “branching” the two parts together, sadly. Too many missing frames.

I based my colours off the Goodtimes DVD and production stills (colour of shirts, boats, etc). The Blu-ray was overly saturated and tinted blue. Michael Caine’s face and outfit were clear indicators of a botched colour job.

The Goodtimes DVD was not 100% accurate, but it was miles ahead of the faded master used for the Universal DVD. TV spots were also used for references, but only to see if the general look was right. Additionally, I consulted the “Siskel and Ebert” review.

I can post a comparison shortly if anyone would like to check my work.

Aaaaaand now the theatrical version is up on Netflix. sigh

Well, this version isn’t as highly compressed, but it is disheartening that they didn’t use it for the Blu-ray.

But wouldn’t it help to have the missing “Jake’s Death” shots from it?

Wait are you serious, the version where the shark gets impaled and bleeds out is available on Netflix in HD I always liked that ending better, I mean why would a shark blow up from being poked in the side lol

I actually just checked this out a few hours ago. Yep the Netflix version has the original ending. Strange. On another note the print of the first Jaws on Netflix is not the BD print either. It looks to be an HD master of the print from the 2000 and 2005 DVDs. It also had the first surround mix done for Jaws in 2000 ie minus the restored sound FX from the original mono.
