Functionally they serve very similar purposes.
The main purpose being destroying thousands of years of written language development.

Emojis are a blight upon humanity and probably worse than Stalin. I also hate how some sites automatically turn Emoticons into Emojis.

I do think there’s such a thing has emoji over use.
I’ve never seen a tasteful use of Emoji, it’s always a bunch of spammed crying laughing faces and 100s and fucking “ok” hand signs.
I also hate how Emojis look compared to Emoticons. When put in a line of text, they stand out really strangely with all the colors and shit.
Funny, because most of the emoji use I’ve seen have been I good taste. The only one that seems bad to me is Carrie Fisher’s Twitter account, where I can’t understand anything that she says.
I mostly don’t find color to be a problem for me, though that’s a more reasonable concern.
