Man, my respect for Lin, Pegg and Jung has increased even more. They interviewed Justin Lin and Simon Pegg in the latest Empire Film Podcast. During Lin’s interview he revealed that they only had two and half months to come up with a script before production started.
Roberto Orci was originally supposed to direct this film when he suddenly either dropped out or was fired. Abrams then quickly recruited Lin and the others to come in and start over from square one, without being allowed to read the original script. While also being saddled with the film’s original production schedule which was in place to see it out in time for the franchise’s fiftieth. They did a phenomenal job given those circumstances.
Sadly though it seems Paramount/Bad Robot are planning to resurrect that original script for the fourth film. Its two writers, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, are credited as the writers for “Star Trek 4.” Rumor had it that the plot revolved around time travel and that it was part of a plan to give William Shatner a cameo. Now it would seem instead of meeting Kirk Prime, it’s about Kirk meeting his dad, Thor.
