dlbsyst sent me encrypted filenames and passwords for the Sky rips last year. They were accessible through NZBclub.com until recently, when they had a hard drive crash. They are currently rebuilding their huge 2800-plus-day database, I’m looking up the encrypted filenames and they currently don’t show up. No idea if they’ll ever come back.

But I do have the TS files for 1-4 and 6 (I do not like 5 so I never downloaded it, now I kwish I had). I could upload them on one of my cloud drives on one of the storage sites I’m signed up for, but I don’t think they’d all fit at once.

That would be greatly appreciated. Even just going one at a time!

Yes, that would indeed be great!

TServo2049 these were posted to Usenet over 7 years ago but appear to still be available if your provider has them in retention. Mine seems too. I use Usenet Server (UNS). I can post the file names if that is allowed. Otherwise send me a PM and I can set you up for the ones you don’t have. Skycaps for Generations, First Contact and Insurrection are available also. NZBClub is a no go but you can find them on NZBKing.com

UNS has mad retention. When I first got these caps I was using UNS and I got them all, no problem. For the price and service, it was a no brainer to use them for it.

So are any of these 1080p? If the filesizes are correct I’d love to make a BD9 but in practicality a BD25 for all 10 films. Barring The Wrath of Khan since I own the corrected Director’s Cut Blu-ray disc release of it.
Which cut is used for The Undiscovered Country?

I believe they’re in 1080i.

I’m guessing there’s no real point to using up HDD space on the Star Trek II cap. The new Blu-ray seems to be a faithful restoration and a 4K UHD release is on the horizon. The others though… sheesh.

BTW, since no one seems to be interested in any restoration project with the DTS/PCM tracks, would anyone mind putting them up on the Spleen?

I have decided to post the file names for all of the SkyHD caps. I have read through the rules and I don’t think I am breaking any rules in doing so. If I am, moderators please remove.

These were posted to Usenet about 7 years ago but might still be available.

So 1080i isn’t any problem. What’re the filesizes for all?

I have finally received my STII Blu-ray from amazon.co.uk and unfortunately it’s the corrected version. Does anybody know how to get the incorrect version?

Obviously, I’ve missed something. Are you referring to the Sulu error? May I ask why you want the incorrect version?

Yeah, I’m confused. I would send you a copy of the incorrect segment or whatever it is you’re after. But I sent it back and just got my replacement yesterday.

For anyone who wants to quickly check: White barcode on the case = original release, yellow = corrected.

Correct, that’s the thing I’m searching for. Reason : I have a youtube channel where I compare various versions of different Trek episodes / movies. So if any of you guys could upload somewhere the said segment I’d be grateful

That maybe true for the American version, but the version I have has white bar code and still has the corrected shot

Oh, I see. You could recreate it quite easily because the error is only a visual one: a shot of Sulu is incorrectly repeated, but the audio track is correct, so all you’d have to do is swap the shot to make your comparison.

For a complete ST newbie, is there a suggested release for the original movie series? I now have the BD set but after parsing around am really concerned at both the high level of DNR and color manipulation–not to mention the obvious sonic manipulation since all were remixed into 7.1. Some in the LD fangroups have recommended the LDs as being sonically superior.
As far as I can tell the old DVD/HDTV caps in comparisons look far more natural. Best of all is the new Khan remaster which as far as I can tell seems as if were done competently for a change. (Still no original audio. Grr.)

I think you’ve got the idea already. HDTV versions, with the new BD release now working nicely for II theatrical/directors versions.

I would definitely be interested in the HDTV caps of 1 and 3-6 if anyone manages to get them. I’m a bit hesitant to start up a usenet account just to check if they’re accessible given that it seems unlikely and some of you kind folks are already looking into it.

I would definitely be interested in the HDTV caps of ANY movie except the second one 😃

Has anyone compared the restored 35mm scan of Star Trek III (from Spleen) with its HD TV counterpart?

I haven’t seen either yet, but the screenshots of the 35mm print look glorious and it comes with the PCM 2.0 Laserdisc track. It’s much easier to attain so I’m leaning towards grabbing that rather than the TV version.

Screenshots here and here.

Is there still interest in me posting my ST TMP Director’s Cut VHS capture? I was trying to make some basic artwork for it but I haven’t found the right look yet.

@TServo2049, Have you seen the new Director’s Cut Blu-ray of Wrath of Khan? How does it compare to the 35mm print you saw, and which of the HD TV cap and the Blu-ray is more accurate?

Of course, you saw this print over a year ago, so it seems unlikely you’d remember. But any thoughts would be nice.

I don’t have the Director’s Cut Blu yet. But you’re right, I probably wouldn’t remember the exact details of how that print looked.

I managed to grab all nine films off of NZBKing.com yesterday, using UsenetServer.

They’re definitely worth it. First off, from what I can tell, all six original films have a 5.1 track taken from the PAL DVDs, or from the NTSC DVDs and sped up, while the three TNG films have DTS tracks from their DVDs.

While there’s much much less noise reduction and terrible digital enhancements added to the picture, I still feel it’s lacking grain. Not sure if that’s more of an issue with the source or the format these masters were used for, but the image can look a little soft, most notable with the TNG films.

Other than that, fantastic. They’re the Blu-rays with a bit less detail, less vibrant colours, but a much more natural unaltered film look. I wouldn’t say they’re stunning, but for most of the films, they’re the best option out there.

The Motion Picture: Sky HD.

The Wrath of Khan: Director’s Cut Blu-ray. Proper colour grading, proper theatrical presentation with the dark look and improved contrast. Much more detail coming from a 4K scan. Everything looks too bright after seeing this, a very faithful restoration.

The Search for Spock: 35mm LPP scan. You can get this off MySpleen. Depends if you prefer detail over colour grading, but I find it very hard to go back to any of the Blu-ray/DVD/HD TV caps after seeing how the film’s supposed to look. Everything else looks way too bright and extremely vibrant after seeing the 35mm scan. It also comes with its original LD 2.0 PCM track, so it provides a much nicer aural experience.

The Voyage Home - Insurrection: Sky HD.

Nemesis: Blu-ray. It’s the only option you have, but thankfully, it’s far and away the best looking of the bunch (excluding STII) as it was the first film to get a digital intermediate during its production.

There you go. So if you’re planning to get these but don’t have enough HDD space for all of them, skip II and pick up the Blu-ray and get the 35mm scan of III. I’d get them quick, I can’t imagine most of them surviving to next summer.

P. S. Star Trek VI is a strange one. First off, it’s presented in its director’s cut’s 2:1 aspect ratio. The only problem is it’s not the director’s cut, it’s the theatrical version. It’s a weird amalgamation of the two rather than one or the other.

Also, as others pointed out, it seems to be slowed down back to its original 23.976/24 FPS speed, except, the guy who slowed it down didn’t even think to adjust the pitch. Now you’re stuck with audio that sounds like its on helium, but is in its proper speed, giving a very strange overall presentation.

I’d almost argue going for the iTunes Director’s Cut version of this film rather than the Sky HD cap for those two reasons. But if you’re okay with the aspect ratio problem, and the pitch is easy to fix, I’m sure you’d find this version preferable.
