Shit and I have to wait a MONTH till I can watch it legally. What a horrible marketing mistake

I want to see the new film, but I can barely remember a thing from the previous two, so I’ll have to re-watch both. I remember liking both, and probably still will, but who knows? Perhaps I’ll find that they both suck.
Not enough people read the EU.
Despite what many people would have you believe, they don’t suck. They’re just different from your typical star trek.
This is coming from someone who likes your typical star trek.

While it would help to watch the first one, Into Darkness is never referenced or mentioned at all. It’s totally ignored. Neither of them really suck IMO, but Into Darkness was a clear step down from the first.
Maybe Nero flipped the “odd number curse” to be the even number curse.

Yep, I think Nero did do that, Kahn was a complete waste of a character in Darkness and I’ll just never believe a blindingly white blue eyed Brit to be Kahn.
Cumberbatch would have been more believable as Joachim. 😉
Where were you in '77?

Great, now I want a fanedit where JohnKhan has a kitten on his shoulder the entire time. No one would mention it, of course, and it could make the film more enjoyable. That and Star Wars EU fans upset that he never played Thrawn in Ep VII could pretend it’s a ysalimiri.

Damn, I never realized that he is a perfect match for Joachim!
I too would love to see Darkness with Cumberbatch’s kitten sitting pretty on his shoulder. That made me really laugh out loud.
The line in Beyond about the Franklin being captured by a giant green hand made my week.
Uh, spoilers?

It’s a joke that should have been in the trailer. You’re alright.

Yeah, throwaway line, I didn’t think it was necessary to tag it. Apologies, though.
Watched STID again tonight with my wife, we both enjoyed it again. Cumberbatch was fantastic, someone is gonna have to explain to me why I shouldn’t like him as Kahn.
So looking forward to Beyond tomorrow night.
Don’t they use the space hand concept twice in TOS? Once in “Who Morns For Adonis” and the other in “The Savage Curtain” or some other episode? Or does Sulu just imagine it, or am I?

I think “The Savage Curtain” just has Abe Lincoln floating around in a chair.

I agree that he was fantastic as an actor, it’s just they should have made him a new character and not made him Kahn. Kahn is an already established character. I don’t fully see how a snow white young English man grew into a buff middle aged Mexican. (Not an insult to either actor, just saying the idea of them playing the same character is odd…)
Remember the rumors before the movie was released that Cumberbatch would be playing Gary Mitchell? That’s a what-if movie I’d like to see.

That would have worked out so much better indeed!

A quick question - please, no spoilers, I live in a country where the movie for some reason gets released on 19.8. - is there a chance, that I as a person who hated every Star Trek movie after Insurrection, and I absolutely love Trek stories which have some deeper meanings, or at least are about something more than just Spock hitting somebody and explosions, is there a chance that that kind of person will at least LIKE this movie? I tried to watch different spoiler free reviews and most people seem to like this movie, but those were people who loved the previous 2 movies

For what it’s worth, my dad grew up on TOS back in the 60’s and he told me that he thought Beyond was so good that it almost made him cry.

It’s a different timeline.
Anything that happened before the USS Kelvin incident shouldn’t be affected, so it should technically be the same Ricardo Montalbon Khan in the cryotube. I don’t have much of a problem with taking things less literally and reimagining certain characters, myself, but the argument does make sense. I think it’s a little unfortunate that they cast a white guy in a role so closely associated with an actor of color given the issues with diversity in Hollywood that have come to the forefront in recent years, but since the original version had a Mexican guy playing an Indian guy, it was in some ways a shaky role to begin with. Regardless of whether he makes sense in universe or whether it was a poor casting choice in terms of diversity, I think Cumberbatch’s actual performance was great.
I agree it was a weird choice and it would have been nice if they had gotten an Indian actor, frankly. But that bell can’t be unrung and Cumberbatch’s performance saved it.
Oh yes he did a more than fine job with the role, it’s just that I think they should have just created a new character.
