Guys, I think I like The Final Frontier. I don’t think I’d ever made it past the half-hour mark before today without bailing, but I was really into it this time around, especially once Sybok really got going. I wouldn’t call it a good movie, but there’s a lot going on in there that I find really interesting.

I think the movie could be saved by a complete re-edit and new effects. I like was Shatner was trying to do, and you can clearly see they ran out of money

Someone over at fanedit is doing just that. The new shots I’ve seen are great. 😃

Apparently the ship is a Ralph McQuarrie design.

It’s been confirmed by showrunner Brian Fuller to be set in the Prime timeline.

I don’t recall posting in this thread before, but since the recent flurry of announcements, here’s some thoughts -

I was really looking forward to this new ‘multiple crews’ show, but was sorely disappointed that the powers-that-be decided to show some very unfinished ‘test’ footage as the first preview! On top of that, the new ship that was shown just looks like a poorly-redesigned version of the better proportioned McQuarrie artwork, as far as I’m concerned. Sure, McQuarrie’s ‘nacelles’ look more like ‘rockets’ in his renderings, but I equally dislike the look of the red ‘nacelle’ lights on this version - the ‘revolving’ lights on the TOS-era ‘Enterprise’ were far more interesting-looking.

Ho hum. On the other hand, the new title sounds fine and I quite liked the music that was used.

However, if this show turns out to have too many elements in it that I dislike…then I’ll simply ‘imagine’ that it occurs in the same separate ‘alternative universe’ to the TOS show/TOS movies that I choose to stick all the other ‘Trek’ shows, ‘Generations’ movie, and J.J.'s 'Kelvin Timeline movies into… 😉

In the meantime, I see that the fan vids have started already - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzfgu3_3XXk

The asteroid spacedock concept was also revisited for the Enterprise mirror universe two parter.

Maybe CBS has just cheaped out again, and the whole show is gonna look like this?.. 😉

It’s just test footage but it would have been a good idea to tart it up a bit for a first reveal… 😉
I’m a Ralph fan so I’m happy. Though the body is less a triangle and more the Star Fleet dart shape.
It’s not a swan like the Enterprise refit but it’s an interesting look. Lots of people couldn’t stand the Enterprise D when it first leaked to magazines and that’s now almost as much of an icon as the original series ship.

The fans kvetching about the design seem unaware of that fact. 😉

The Discovery does seem like a hybrid of Klingon and Federation designs as well.

I’m not sure I like this new ship, even considering the history of the design. I sure don’t like the CG effects!

So, a new box set of TOS deleted scenes, new box set of TOS, TAS and TOS movies, new books, and a new TV show. My poor credit card…

I want to wait to see her in action … that is when we’ll know if the U.S.S. Destiny is the shit or not.

Excited to see the Roddenberry Vault. I was hoping, however, when it was first announced that it’d finally have the full original audio for the Cage (with Malachi Throne’s untouched voice for The Keeper.)

To those more knowledgeable here, was the full audio with original voice ever made available? You can hear portions of the original voice in the B&W/Color version of The Cage.

My understanding was the original audio was simply lost over time. Of course, all the missing color footage cut when they made The Menagerie version eventually turned up, so anything is possible.

The Discovery’s design is not yet final:

Brian Fuller said:

[The influence of the McQuarrie art is] to a point where we legally can’t comment on it until we figure out some things.

Heather Kadin said:

I was surprised Bryan didn’t say [it wasn’t finished footage], actually. I mean, we had three weeks to throw that together. The concepts of the ship are totally what we’re going for, and they’ll be honed up until, I think, the day we deliver.

A full audio recording (recording during a public broadcast of the 16mm version) exists, I’m trying to get my hands on it.
And no, not all color footage turned up, or at least was used for any of the restorations. Which was a big surprise to me, they didn’t even use all of the Menagerie footage for the restored versions

Mind you, I’m going on half remembered fragments of Starlog magazine articles from last century. 😉

Is the audio recording from one of those times Gene ran his personal copy of The Cage at a convention?

Started TNG last night after years of procrastination. It’s going to be an uphill battle getting used to this crew; right now Trek without Spock feels deeply wrong on an emotional level. I’m interested enough to keep at it, though, and hopefully after a few more episodes I’ll be invested enough that I won’t be so preoccupied with how much I miss my buddies from TOS. I love Picard, Riker, Dr. Crusher, and Geordie, I think Deanna Troi and Wesley totally suck, I’m ambivalent about Data, and I haven’t seen enough of Worf to have much of an opinion yet. I also don’t feel strongly about Tasha Yar, but I’m spoiled enough to know that that’s not going to matter for long.

Keep going. TNG jumps from “meh” to “amazing” pretty quickly.

First 2 seasons are pretty week, but it gets drastically better during the third season as soon as Mike Piller took over the writing team. Also Worf got much more developed after he became the chief of security

I was quite pleasantly surprised by Beyond. It actually felt like Star Trek. Sadly, they’ve already announced that the next film won’t be penned by Pegg. Which I think is a huge mistake given everything he and Doug Jung did to course correct from the previous two films. Likewise, they haven’t announced the director but it feels like they won’t bring back Lin either. They finally got it right and it already feels like they’re going to steer it off course again.

While I do really want the franchise to continue in the direction Beyond did, I can’t say I’ll be too surprised if they go back into darkness (pun definitely intended). At least we’ll always have this one gem, even if the rest of the movies turn out to be crap.

Keep at it and don’t give up. The first season is good to introduce you to the characters, but a lot of the actual episodes are very weak. Season 2 is slightly better. But echoing others it gets really good during season 3.
