I didn't like it because:

1- I did not read the books, although I was familiar with the storyline and some of the characters. I did read half of the hobbit.

2- The plot was confusing, the characters weren't pretty much developed (except Golum/Smeagol), it was hard to know what was going on if you didn't read the books.

3- Some friends of mine, who are Tolkien fans and read the books, told me they hated the way P.J. changed the story.

4- It was too long, and not very well paced to cope with that length. Titanic is a 3 and a half hour movie but you don't feel like it's that long. Same for Godfather II, Schindler's List, and other good 3 hours + films. At the last 10 minutes of ROTK, the whole audience was screaming "the end! the end!", and so was I.

5- Elijah Wood. That says enough. The only 2 films he tried to act were "Radio Flyer" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

I think Peter Jackson should go back to what he's best: funny gore films, such as Brain Dead (aka Dead Alive). "I kick arse for the lord!"

Did you like the first one? It is probably the best of the three.

I think I enjoyed the third one better. But that means I hated the 2 first movies very much, and hated the third one not so very much.

I would agree that the first film is probably the best, but one tragic mistake is made in that film that taints the rest of the series.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I greatly disliked Gollum. The rest of the films were fine outside of that and Elijah Wood's constant pouting.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

I really liked gollum; he was supposedly CGI, but he seemed so much more real than Jar Jar or Dexter Jetster.

Golum was the only real character.

Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen?

Yes, but it is compounded by the delay in the reforging of Elendil, which goes back to Arwen and the ridiculous 'Arwen is dying' subplot in ROTK (the movie).

I AGREE THAT GOLLUM WAS MUCH MORE REALISTIC THAN JAR JAR OR DEXTER EXCEPT AT THE END OF ROTK WHEN HE'S FIGHTING THE "INVISIBLE" FRODO. IT JUST LOOKED REALLY AWFUL.

That actually happens in the book.

I think it would have been much better if implied rather than shown, because Gollum riding air didn't look natural. (As if anything in that film did.)

That's a shame. They should have at least finished it up for the DVD release.

I just think your suspension of disbelief is wearing off the more you watch it.

I didn't think Golum was that bad! He was brilliantly animated (yes I know there was an actor standing in for it), he didn't look fake or out of place at all, he had a consistent look thoughout the whole film, his voice acting was very good, and it was the only real character, it was the only non-bidimensional, fake, horribly acted character. While the rest of the actors looked like bored grade school kids reading from "Richard the Third", with characters even they didn't know about or didn't care, Golum/Smeagol was a real character with real reasons for his behaviour, with real emotions...

I have to disagree with that.

Elijah may have not had a stellar performance, but Viggo and Sean(both) most certainly did.

I think the best actors were:

Christopher Lee
Ian McKellen
Sean Astin
Anthony Serkis

I thought Gollum was pretty remarkable, actually. I get chills down my spine every time he says, "My precious." I was particularly interested by the scene in Two Towers where he argues with himself.

As for the soundtrack, it's no John Williams score, and I think Howard Shore got somewhat lazy, but the main theme and the Isengard theme were fantastic, in my opinion.

None of it comes close to the Star Wars Trilogy, though (of course). I get really sick of people putting down Star Wars (ever since Lord of the Rings came out), arguing that LOTR is better because it has better character developement (and then smile smugly). Balony! Star Wars has a perfect balance.

But Gollum was really good.

The acting was a mixed bag; I thought McKellen, Astin, Serkus, Boyd, and Rhys Davys were all great, but on the other hand, Viggo Mortensen and Bloom came across has extremely wooden or over acted. I thought Frodo was fine, but Wood wouldn't have been my choice acting wise.

And whoever cast Lyv Tyler as Arwen just deserves to be buried in a pile of the worst tasting cheese puffs ever and forced to eat their way out.

LOTR HAD WAY MORE TIME TO DEVELOP THE CHARACTERS IN THE BOOKS. TOLKIEN WASN'T WRITING A SCREENPLAY LIKE GL WAS. IF YOU COMPARE THE LOTR MOVIES TO THE SW MOVIES AND FORGET ABOUT THE LOTR BOOKS THEN I BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE ON CLOSE TO EQUAL GROUND WHEN IT COMES TO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
