Why does it NEED to be known that Cho’s Sulu is gay to begin with? Is it just a lazy ass PR move to grab a wider audience? It is not an integral part of the story and it never was when Roddenberry was still alive. Now, Gene wasn’t the greatest writer in the world, he was the idea man. He had the vision and he surrounded himself with people more than capable of making that vision a reality. THAT is what made TOS so awesome.
I agree, had they created a new character that was gay, fine, totally cool with it. The fact that they had to piss off Captain Sulu by rewriting his character after getting input that they asked HIM for but didn’t like? This may actually hinder me going to see this film in the theater proper like.
Exactly. Again, if Takei weren’t gay, they would’ve never picked Sulu to be gay, and so his wishes ought to be respected instead of dismissed. Still, I don’t get the need to know what some character likes to do with his/her part, but if it’s necessary (?) then make a new character.
