Why does it NEED to be known that Cho’s Sulu is gay to begin with? Is it just a lazy ass PR move to grab a wider audience? It is not an integral part of the story and it never was when Roddenberry was still alive. Now, Gene wasn’t the greatest writer in the world, he was the idea man. He had the vision and he surrounded himself with people more than capable of making that vision a reality. THAT is what made TOS so awesome.

I agree, had they created a new character that was gay, fine, totally cool with it. The fact that they had to piss off Captain Sulu by rewriting his character after getting input that they asked HIM for but didn’t like? This may actually hinder me going to see this film in the theater proper like.

Exactly. Again, if Takei weren’t gay, they would’ve never picked Sulu to be gay, and so his wishes ought to be respected instead of dismissed. Still, I don’t get the need to know what some character likes to do with his/her part, but if it’s necessary (?) then make a new character.

Personally I’m over gay Sulu. I don’t care either way if the rest of the movie is good. However, my dad will probably hate the movie simply because of gay Sulu, no matter how good the rest of the movie may be. So I can’t wait to hear him complaining about it.

The giant alien bug-beast jumps out of the purple bushes and nearly closes it’s pincers on Sulu when Kirk hops forward and pulls Sulu out of the way. They fall and roll together down the hill. They come to a stop at the bottom with Kirk laying face-down in the dirt and Sulu laying on top of his back. Sulu “Thanks!” Kirk “Don’t mention it.”

Does anyone know if there’s a site that tracks the continuity and discontinuity between the Abramstrek comics and the films?

I do wonder if Spock “prime” is officially alive and well.

They’ve spoken about that but I won’t say anything further in respect of spoilers.

It’s been confirmed by showrunner Brian Fuller to be set in the Prime timeline.

Does anyone live close to a theater showing Beyond in this new format? Kind of like Cinerama Redux.

Don’t bother. It’s literally three screens bolted together off angled in a standard regular sized multiplex auditorium. The photos of the real thug are jaw droppingly bad and reviews I’ve heard are truly awful.
After personally experiencing Barco’s new sound format (fake 11.1 aka lie-atmos) it doesn’t surprise me at all.

I posted in the SWvST thread but figured I’d repost here.
I hope to get TOS on Blu soon and finally start Trekking at some point in the near future.
If I like brainy sci-fi, Forbidden Planet and a few vintage tv shows I should be okay right?

Guys, I think I like The Final Frontier. I don’t think I’d ever made it past the half-hour mark before today without bailing, but I was really into it this time around, especially once Sybok really got going. I wouldn’t call it a good movie, but there’s a lot going on in there that I find really interesting.

Lots of truly fantastic episodes in Seasons 1 and 2. You’re in for a treat.

Star Trek is Forbidden Planet. Same idea. Except Star Trek has better characters, but is often a little sillier/cheesier (but not all the time). It’s amazing, watch it yesterday.

I think the movie could be saved by a complete re-edit and new effects. I like was Shatner was trying to do, and you can clearly see they ran out of money

I absolutely LOVE the fact that they used the Phase II Enterprise as the inspiraction for the USS Destiny

The fans kvetching about the design seem unaware of that fact. 😉

The Discovery does seem like a hybrid of Klingon and Federation designs as well.
