Star wars v.s Star trek — Page 4

If I go off of nostalgia alone, Wars wins easily. I didn’t get into Trek until two years ago when I caught the first two movies on TV airing back to back. My father sometimes spoke about how much he loved Trek as a kid, so I figured I’d watch. I’ve been a fan of Star Wars ever since I was 3 or so.

What’s the best advice for someone considering jumping into Trek? And I mean this as a lifelong SW fan who has no knowledge outside the general stuff. I’ve see a few minutes of TNG reruns and about five minutes of the first film.

I figure starting out with TOS and the theatrical features. On the movies though is there a suggestion as to preferred format? I’m thinking LD to be honest since the BDs look like they have horrid DNR and color manipulation save for the Khan remaster. I’ve heard some in the LD realm say the sound is better as well.

I held off for so long because when growing up it was always such a division amongst fans: you could only like one or the other. That always seemed silly to me but I had no idea where to start with Star Trek.

I did really enjoy Galaxy Quest though. I may not have gotten the Trek references but I did realize what they were.

And before Star Wars, you risked becoming an outcast if you let slip you liked Space:1999. Some things never change. 😉

The movies look decent on DVD. At least they don’t have DNR. The theatrical cut of The Motion Picture has only been out on Blu Ray though.

Start with TOS. (I don’t know if you can get the non SE versions on DVD these days.) If you like it, follow it up with the animated series, then go to the movies. There is crossover with TNG with The Undiscovered Country, so you could start watching TNG before you get to it.

It looks like if you go with DVDs for TOS, you’re getting either the original or remastered (i.e. enhanced effects) versions, but not both. The blu-rays, on the other hand, give you the option to watch each episode with original or enhanced effects.

I would start with TOS. If you don’t want to watch all 79 episodes (most of the episodes of season 3 are not recommended to watch), check some fan site for ratings and watch only the “good” ones.

Then you can watch TAS. Some of the episodes are good, but most of them are very childish so you can skip the whole show if you want.

Then the first 6 feature films.
I personally love the first one, but many people would say it’s boring, and the events which happened during this movie are not referenced anywhere, so you can skip it if you want. Movies 2,3, and 4 are essential (and really, really good), the 5th - well, you probably won’t be able to enjoy it sober, the 6th one is like the 1st one - I think it’s great, but many people don’t like it for some reason.

Then go with TNG. Most of the episode from the first 2 seasons are pretty dumb and they feel unfinished, so again just like TOS, if you don’t want to watch all of them just check some fan site for ratings and watch only “good” ones. Seasons 3-6 are very strong, there are only a very small number of weak episodes. TNG season 6 happens at the same time as DS9 season 1, TNG season 7 happens at the same time as DS9 season 2.

The first 2-3 seasons of DS9 are pretty boring, but it gets much better as soon as the Dominion storyline starts.

Voyager sucks, and I personally wouldn’t recommend it, but again, there are many people who say it’s their favourite Trek show, so…

Enterprise - I love the first 3 seasons and hate the 4th. Many people however hate the first 3 seasons and say that the show started to get good during the 4th one 😃

TNG movies are really bad (except for First Contact), so watch them only if you want and you can watch them any time after TNG ends, only Nemesis takes place after Voyager ends.

JJ movies - I would recommend them at the very end, one story line begins long after the events of Voyager or Nemesis, and then they go back to TOS era.

Correct. However only the full season Blu-rays have both versions, the various re-releases which have only a few selected TOS episodes all have only the version with the new CGI effects.

Don’t know if they are still in print, but the Fan Collective DVD sets group episodes from some or all the series by themes, such as time travel, or a particular foe, and can be a good way to sample what fans consider the best of each show. I think there were “best of” sets for TOS and TNG as well.

Do people dislike The Undiscovered Country? It’s my favorite after Khan.
