Could this be the new “special edition”

“Lucas said he hadn’t yet committed to a precise schedule but hoped to have the first film ready for the 30th anniversary of the original “Star Wars” movie in 2007 and that he would then rerelease one “Star Wars” film per year in 3-D.”

Acording to thedigitalbits.com:

Some interesting news for you Star Wars fans today. Remember how we said (on Tuesday) that James Cameron and George Lucas were going to be part of a digital 3-D projection presentation at ShoWest this week? Well, it happened yesterday. Joseph Kleiman of the World Enteractive was there and posted a report on his site. Joining Cameron and Lucas on stage were filmmakers Robert Zemeckis, Robert Rodriguez and Randall Kleiser, along with Doug Darrow, Business Development Manager for TI DLP Cinema. During the presentation, Lucas announced his plans to re-release the Star Wars Trilogy in 3-D for the original film's 30th anniversary in 2007.

Seems to be true. Would someone PLEASE take these movies away from this crazy man?

Just goes to show....at this point, Lucas' need to mess with his films is becoming masturbatory.

What seems to be the trouble? He is presenting the films in 3D. I think it's great. Hitchcock did Dial M for Murder! in 3D and it was better for it. There are alot of scenes in which 3D would be very impressive. It's fun and a great nod to cinema of old.

What's important here is that the movies were never filmed in 3d.

That means 100% digital creation of 3d.

There's no way that's going to be the only think he touches if all CG work and effects are going to have to be done again from the ground up.

Besides, for got sakes why? 3d movies have never been anything more than a novelty at best in its hayday. It's not something that was actually done on GOOD movies. Let alone after the fact.

It's just a further sign on insanity and strip mining of a classic by a man who no longer has any talent left.

Up next: all actors will be replaced by CG characters...

If he hates the original trilogy that much, why doesn't he scrap it and just do a remake with new actors? There has to be more profit in that for him and he could make any changes he wants from the beginning.

Apparently you haven't seen Dial M for Murder, one of Hitchcock's best films. It stars the lovely Grace Kelly and is availble now from Warner Home Video. I suggest you check it out before you go around saying things like that.

I really don't see what the complaints are. 3D can not be viewed on DVD (pretty much) to date. That means you won't be seeing this release to home theater and you would have to drive to a digital 3D location to watch it.

I think it's just good ole fashion movie going fun, the way Lucas intended for his films to be. He's combining some of the great things of early cinema: 3D and serials.

That's one out of how many 3d movies? I'd call that a fluke.

Also, I recommend DVD shopping. They DO sell DVDs with 3d on them and cheap 3d glasses.
We can only hope he intends to use a GOOD 3d technology not the R/B glasses.

You know, I'm out of this thread. But if you have to ask the question "What's wrong with Star Wars in 3d", you're probably in the wrong forums...

I hafta kinda agree with that. Just more gimmicks. You know Lucas will change the film around to take full advantage if this. How many of you guys prefer the IMAX AOTC over the theatrical version?

Now THIS is cool technology. I love the lightsaber.

Kiss Me Kate was also availble in 3D and it was also a great film. 3D films struggled because big name directors did not initially gravitate towards it. This is a different scenerio. Studios like Disney and Fox, directors like Lucas, Speilberg, Cameron, Rodriguez and Zemeckis are already lining up to be a part of it. Would you say that Cinemascope is a gimmick? Because it was spawned from the same idea 3D was.

Just because I'm excited about this film doesn't mean that I'm in the wrong forum. People can support the original versions of the film and appreciate changes Lucas makes to the films. I'm a fan of cinema first, Star Wars second. It's not my battle cry I carry to the grave "OOT or Death!!". I think both versions are important, just as both versions of Touch of Evil are important. The original was a B-Movie that was very hammy. The re-cut version years later made it the original version that Orson Welles intended based on his production notes he had written. Both have a place in the history of film.

It's a fun way for George Lucas to do something with the trilogy. I am sure he isn't looking at this as the 'definitive edition' of his films, so the normal re-visioned version that was just released will still be the ones that people can marvel at and we can still pine for the original.

This is an experience film. Tell me that you are not thoroughly excited to have the cave monster come flying out at you as the Falcon zips away or have Obi Wan swinging his saber up in your grill? How about the X-Wing barrelling down the trench right at you. Obviously he is going to manipulate the shots for the 3D effect, but I can only see positive things from this. Fun for the audience to feel like kids again.

If you aren't excited, you've become too wrapped up in the whole OOT thing and can't just enjoy the films for just that: movies.

..or just too bored with every new "exciting thing" Lucas feels he needs to add to his films. Why doesn't he try making a new film with this technology, rather than rely on the crutch of changing his old films?

Lucas may think he's done with the Saga, but I don't think he'll ever be successful with anything without the Star Wars label slapped on it for the rest of his career.

This is not what I meant when I said Return of the Jedi needed multidimensional villains!

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

I thought Lucas said he was done with Star Wars after ROTS!

He hasn't figured out that we would much rather see new films like Indiana Jones 4, rather than a dozen different versions of Star Wars.

It almost makes me wish Star Wars wasn't very successful, Empire Strikes Back was a complete failure, Lucas directed ROTJ himself (and made a really good movie that was also unsuccessful), and then made at least 6 other great movies and never got rich and famous. Then, we would have a bunch of good George Lucas movies to watch (and the OT in the original version), and not these prequels.
