STAR WARS in 3-D!

George Lucas told ShoWest that he is planning to remaster all of the Star Wars films for rerelease in 3-D as a way to promote the technology, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Appearing as part of a panel of high-profile directors promoting 3-D and digital cinema at ShoWest, Lucas said he hadn't yet committed to a precise schedule, but hoped to have the first film ready for the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie in 2007 and that he would then rerelease one Star Wars film per year in 3-D, the trade paper reported.

Lucas was joined by James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Robert Rodriguez and Randal Kleiser. Peter Jackson joined the group via a pretaped 3-D segment. They all implored theater owners to invest in digital projectors, which would allow theaters to show their upcoming movies in 3-D.

BAD idea...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I don't see why it would be a bad idea. Now, whether the outcome will be good or bad is another subject of discussion.
But I'm fine with the different releases, as long as the previous ones remain available for the public.
I don't believe that Lucas is gonna push it so far as to make the 2-D versions unavailable once the 3-D is out...
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

I was beaten to it!

I just read an article about this at Yahoo. Seems the Yahoo article is a little longer:

Filmmakers Hawk New 3-D Technology
By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer

LAS VEGAS - After a brief incarnation in the early 1950s and a short-lived revival in the 1980s, 3-D movies are now getting serious consideration among filmmakers who want to send images leaping off the movie screen and into the audience.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas and "Titanic" director James Cameron were among those promoting a new digital alteration that converts two-dimensional movies into 3-D.

Theatergoers still have to wear those familiar cardboard glasses with red-and-blue cellophane, although backers of the new technology say it doesn't cause the eyestrain common with past 3-D efforts.

Lucas said he hopes eventually to release all six of his "Star Wars" movies in 3-D format that can be shown in regular moviehouses, not specialty theaters such as IMAX.

"It looks better than the original, to be honest with you," Lucas told theater owners Thursday at their annual ShoWest convention.

Developed by In-Three Inc. of Agoura Hills, Calif., the new technology involves converting a movie into two slightly offset images, one for each eye. The special glasses trick the brain into perceiving the picture as a single image.

Unlike some 3-D systems that require two side-by-side film projectors, In-Three's system operates with a single digital projector, the filmmakers said.

A snippet of "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones" converted to 3-D was screened, and the images showed remarkable depth in a scene where Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi pursue an assassin in a flying vehicle.
(Coruscant Speeder Chase...I suppose that would be a decent scene to do. I'd rather see a 3D Battle of Geonosis or Battle of Yavin)

While the filmmakers all have an interest in releasing old movies in 3-D and shooting new ones in the format, they also tried to sell theater owners on digital systems to replace film-reel projectors that have been the standard for a century.

The digital projectors can be inexpensively modified to handle 3-D, they said.

"I can't shoot in a lesser format," said Cameron, who is filming the science-fiction adventure "Battle Angel," in 3-D. "I believe that 3-D is absolutely the future. ... They'll have to pry my glasses out of my cold, dead fingers."

So entertainment history really does repeat itself!

Honestly, didn't the 3D gimmick die out decades ago?

Star Wars in 3D? Watching the Yavin battle with those 3d googles? BAD idea. Bad.

Those horrible red and blue lenses... have any of you seen Imax 3D? You get this headset with two LCD lenses that flicker on and off alternatively in sync with the two projectors. I was really amazed at how clean and believable the 3D was.

looking around a bit I found out about Cameron doing his new CG movie in 3D.... But what I caught at the end:
"... I know I'm making a film for an audience. I can't just please myself." imagine the possibilities if GL gave a damn about you?

More appropriate would be Star Wars in holographic format! (in more vivid colors with no flickering)!

Remember those Topps Star Wars 3d cards that came out in the late 90's? (Or the comic books for that matter?) It's an interesting idea to say the least. I've long wished Lucas had thought about having Viewmaster reel photos shot during the production of the original films. I have a Star Trek Viewmaster set that's amazing to look at!

As far as I know, there are 3 ways of seeing a 3D film. I might be wrong and I might be forgeting some other method, but...

1- The red-green or red-blue googles. This was the first method used in 3d films. One projector showed a red-colored image, the other showed a blue or green image. If you look at a red image thru a red-colored plastic, you won't be able to see a thing, but the green or blue image will appear to be black. Same goes for the other color, which will be at the other eye. By using two different colors in each eye, the viewer would eventually have his eyes tired, and even get headaches. It was popular during the 50s but I don't think this method is used anymore.

2- The polarized googles. These came out during the 60s or 70s, and it's quite simple: each of the polarized glasses filter one form of light, in a way that if you put the two lenses together, light won't be able to pass thru. Both projectors are equipped with similar lenses, so one eye will only be able to see what one projector is showing. Of course, this method is not perfect and some light from the wrong projector can "leak" into one of the lenses, creating a "ghost" image. Yes, more headaches.

3- The "eletronic" way. This one is rare, and I haven't seen a movie in this format yet. Basically, you have googles with LCD lenses that shuts down one of the eyes at a time, 24 times a second. There are two projectors, and they are in synch with the googles, showing one image at a time, from the left eye perspective, and then from the right eye perspective. You'll have a nice, smooth 3D effect with this one, although I'm not sure about collateral effects such as headaches and tired eyesight.

Watching movies on LCD sounds infinitely more appealing than a giant cathod ray tube moniter, but still, I think theatres should stick with the projection real for the time being.

Uh no, no, the LCD thing is only on the googles. The movie is still projected on a screen.

Shouldn't it be 'goggles', not 'googles'?
All this time I thought it strange that you're talking about a search engine...

The Cleveland Science Center had a special exhibit recently all about optical illusions, and 2 of those 3 methods were demonstrated (red/blue glasses and the LCD goggles).

The Captain EO thing at Disney uses the third method (polarized light).

Sorry didn't know how to spell it. Goggles is it then.

Most of Disney's 3D rides use the polarized glasses, maybe beucase they are cheap and they won't lose much if a tourist decides to keep then.

Yes, computer-colorize Casablanca, make it 3D, and add some CGI into it. That should be enough to make Humphrey Bogart get out of his coffin and kill us all...

Did anybody say anything about computer color or CGI? I was simply asking why 3D alone would be such a bad thing...

It was originally made in 2-D, it should be shown that way. Same with Gone With The Wind and Star Wars. Besides 3-D wouldn't add anything to Casablanca.

Uh it would add depth...

This whole 3D thing is pretty stupid, it's a gimmick to make people pay to watch the same movies again. 3D is ok for a 10 minute feature in a theme park, not for classic films...

I read this article, and all I could think of was a comment made about 18 years ago by Martin Scorsese in Video Review to the effect that eventually there will probably be some 3-d holographic way of viewing films, but that it should never completely replace the original version. I'm with Scorsese.
