I don't see why it would be a bad idea. Now, whether the outcome will be good or bad is another subject of discussion.
But I'm fine with the different releases, as long as the previous ones remain available for the public.
I don't believe that Lucas is gonna push it so far as to make the 2-D versions unavailable once the 3-D is out...
